    “RAGS TO RICHES” Leo Pettipas Manitoba Archaeological Society At the height of the last Ice Age around 18,000 years ago, all of Manitoba was covered by an ice cap some 1,200 metres thick. The weight of this massive burden pushed the underlying land surface downward, in much the same way that the surface of a cushion will sink when someone sits on it. Eventually, the ice sheet began to melt, and by about 7,500 years ago, it had all but disappeared from Manitoba. At first, the melting was especially rapid around the southern margins of the glacier; the last area to become ice-free was the North country around Hudson Bay. In other words, the southern portions of the province became ice-free first, and more and more of the land was released from the pressure of the ice as its edge melted ever northward and the glacier got smaller and smaller over time. The disappearance of the ice sheet gave rise to a process that scientists refer to as “crustal rebound.” Ever since it became free of its glacial burden, the surface of the earth’s crust in the North has been “rebounding” upward toward its original, pre-glacial elevation – just as the cushion will rise upward to its original height after the person gets up off it. Crustal rebound had a strong influence on the natural and human history of the major lakes and rivers that inherited the region from the now-extinct Lake Agassiz. For example, after that great lake disappeared, the Saskatchewan River flowed into Cedar Lake, just as it does now.

    7 Bar L. Hereford Ranch Moose Creek, MB November 22, 1961 I am more or less forced to write a story for our 25 grandchildren who keep me busy answering questions all day long. Riding down the river in the Skippy L, sitting up front on the barge watching the river go by, or just sitting out in the alfalfa fields watching a bunch of calves lying down with a couple of nurse cows looking after them. These kids just keep on asking questions. They are as bad as our own boys and girls for wanting to know about long ago. Why they called that long point Graves Point, who named Shoulder Blade Island, and why they call the lake across the portage Traders’ Lake. Jennie and I are not going away for a trip this winter they way we generally do, so I will start this story. Our ranch house here is very warm and comfortable. Old Henry Campbell, a good Indian that never went to school, has been the ranch manager for many years. I don’t know where he got the name Campbell. Some Hudson Bay clerk long ago might be able to tell us. We have official word from the Hydro Board to vacate here by 1963. The Grand Rapids dam will put six feet of water over all our alfalfa, brome, and clover fields. We have some 1500 acres in tame hay and thousands of acres of lovely pasture fields. Our trading post is three miles away. Moose Creek that runs out of Moose Lake is open all winter, making a good dividing line for our cattle.

The Ohio State University 1955 Frontispiece The mountains: Peyto Lake and the Mistaya Valley, North Saskatchewan Basin PREFACE The economic potentialities of semiarid regions are considerably enhanced if the meager supply of precipitation is supplemented by water from other sources. The writer obtained an appreciation of both the possibilities and the problems associated with surface water use as a result of a study of Irrigation farming in the rain shadow area of southern New Zealand. In 1951 his interest in the use of the water resource was further stimulated after traveling across the rain shadow area of the Prairie Provinces, Canada* The three major cities through which he passed are located on important tributaries of the Saskatchewan River. Dams across the upper Bow River provide both storage and head for hydroelectric generation. An area of intensive farming, centering on Lethbridge, Alberta, contrasts with the grazing lands of the high plains and the dry-farmed cropland of the western lowlands. Irrigation ditches parallel the fences in the area between Lethbridge and Taber. Beyond, the land is sterile. A few beef cattle are grazed on vast expanses of steppe grassland. At Medicine Hat the author learned of plans to bring water from the west to serve these dry lands* Many of the problems of the Prairie Provinces are associated with the lack of water.
