Today, athletics likewise holds an important role in our society. Similarities can be seen in the preparation of ancient and modern athletes as well as the attitudes and motivations surrounding athletics. These similarities illustrate that athletics serves an underlying function in ancient Greece as it does today: to both provide a stage to show self-excellence and a release to dispel pent up human emotions. 2 Introduction “One More Rep! Push! Harder! Faster! Stronger!” These words are well known to any athlete preparing for competition. -

Arrive at the Corinth Canal for a brief stop and then continue on to the Acropolis of Corinth. Acro-corinth is the citadel of Corinth. It is situated to the southwest of the ancient city and rises to an elevation of 1883 ft. [574 m.]. Today it is surrounded by walls that are about 1.85 mi. [3 km.] long. The foundations of the fortifications are ancient—going back to the Hellenistic Period. The current walls were built and rebuilt by the Byzantines, Franks, Venetians, and Ottoman Turks. Climb up and visit the fortress. Then proceed to the Ancient city of Corinth. It was to this megalopolis where the apostle Paul came and worked, established a thriving church, subsequently sending two of his epistles now part of the New Testament. Here, we see all of the sites associated with his ministry: the Agora, the Temple of Apollo, the Roman Odeon, the Bema and Gallio’s Seat. Life in Two City-States Athens and Sparta 27.1 Introduction In Chapter 26, you learned that ancient Greece was a collection of city- states, each with its own government. In this chapter, you will learn about two of the most important Greek city-states, Athens and Sparta. They not only had different forms of government, but very different ways of life. Athens was a walled city near the sea. Nearby, ships came and went from a busy port. Inside the city walls, master potters and sculptors labored in work- shops. Wealthy people and their slaves strolled through the marketplace. Often the city's citizens (free men) gathered to loudly debate the issues of the day. Sparta was located in a farming area on a plain. No walls surrounded the city. Its buildings were simple and plain compared to those of Athens. Even the clothing of the people in the streets was drab. Columns of soldiers tramped through the streets, with fierce expressions behind their bronze helmets. Even a casual visitor could see that Athens and Sparta were very different. Let's take a closer look at the way people lived in these two city-states. Wine: California State University, Long Beach The Mediterranean -- the sea between the two lands -- links three continents: Africa, Asia, and Europe. Here Eastern and Western civilizations developed, mingled, and fused -- sometimes in peace, more often through war and social conflict. In no other global area are medical, nutritional, and dietary accounts of wine, its production and use, more rich and varied. It is here, too, that European medicine developed from mythology into practice. The mythological origins of Greek medical-nutritional practices stem from Aesklepios, his physician-sons, Ma-cha-on and Po-dal-i-rus, and his daughter Hygeia. According to Greek mythology, Aesklepios, son of Apollo, sailed on Jason's ship, Argo, during the heroic quest for the golden fleece; According to Homer, Machaon and Po-dal-i-rus fought at Troy. The first Greek physician to emerge from the mythological cloak of Aesklepios, however, was Hippocrates (BCE 460-377). Hippocrates, considered the father of European medicine, was the first known Mediterranean physician to integrate the physiological constructs of elements, humors, and temperature- moisture attributes into a comprehensive healing system. The corpus of medical writings attributed to Hippocrates is vast, and scholars debate and sort "genuine" Hippocratic texts from fraudulent "later" works. General consensus holds that some medical books can be attributed to Hippocrates, himself, while others were written by later Greek physicians also named Hippocrates, while still others were written by "unnamed" eastern Mediterranean physicians. There has remained the suggestion, too that some works claimed to be written by Hippocrates were in fact authored or strongly influenced by the lesser known Greek physician, Ctesias, who had traveled to Persia and India, whereas there is no evidence that Hippocrates traveled beyond the limits of Asia Minor. -

Rules and Regulations The ancient Olympics had the potential to be very dangerous, even deadly, and a strict set of rules were imposed to regulate the behavior of athletes. Rules also applied more broadly to the spectators and even the city-states themselves. Who Enforced the Rules? Judges, called the Hellanodikai, were selected from the citizens of Elis and given ten months’ training by Elian officials on how to oversee the games. Once trained, the Hellanodikai were responsible for sorting competitors into age categories, ensuring the Sacred Truce was upheld (see Section 6: Politics), supervising the training of athletes prior to the games, and enforcing the code of conduct for both spectators and athletes. The Hellanodikai had additional help with enforcement and Terracotta Skyphos (Deep Drinking Cup), Greek, Attic, ca. 500 BCE, Terracotta, 06.1021.49, New York City, Metropolitan Museum of Art punishment: mastigophoroi (whip- bearers), rabdouchoi (rod-bearers), and alytarches/alytai, responsible for crowd control. Rules for Athletes Athletes needed the permission of the Hellanodikai to participate in the Olympics. Only male citizens were eligible. If accepted, they spent ten months in training before the start of the games. Even then, their participation wasn’t guaranteed. Carlos Museum and reserved the right to remove substandard athletes from the competition. Athletes might also be removed during this period if the city-state they represented violated the Sacred Truce. Once the games began, athletes were required to perform in the nude, with the exception of chariot drivers and jockeys.
