Z Zabarella, Jacopo chair of logic, succeeding Tomitano. On 4 January 1569 he secured the second extraordinary chair of Born: 5 September 1533, Padua natural philosophy. There was likely a pause in his Died: 15 October 1589, Padua teaching from 1574 to 1576 on account of the severity of plague in Padua. On 26 March 1577 Marco Sgarbi he acquired the first extraordinary chair of natural Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, Venice, Italy philosophy, and in 1578, he published his Opera logica in Venice, thus opening a large debate on the Abstract order and method of knowledge among his con- temporaries – especially with Francesco Jacopo Zabarella (1553–1589) is considered Piccolomini (1520–1604) and Bernardino Petrella one of the most acute and brilliant logicians (1529–1595). In 1580 Zabarella published his of all time. He made an important contribution Tabulae logicae and also founded the Accademia to the interpretation of Aristotle and developed degli Stabili. In 1584, he came under attack in two original ideas especially in the field of logic directions: from Piccolomini in his Universa and epistemology, opening up the pathway of philosophia de moribus, and from Petrella in his early modern science. Logicarum disputationum libri VII. The same year, Zabarella’s reply to Piccolomini was his De doctrina ordine apologia. In the meantime, on Biography 6 September 1585, he became professor of the second ordinary chair of natural philosophy, and He was born in Padua on 5 September 1533, the the following year he published his De naturalis eldest son of Giulio Zabarella. He was well-versed scientiae constitutione. -

The text presented here is the first chapter of an upcoming book by the author. INTRODUCTION This book attempts to show that it is through the recognition of what I call the hypersensible, and the work of metaphor, that art comes into its own, and is able to twist free of metaphysical aesthetics, rooted in the ontology of identity and governed by the laws of imitation. By “hypersensible” I mean a dimension that escapes the classical distinction and the space that stretches between the sensible and the supersensible, matter and form, or the image and the original. In a nutshell, the hypersensible designates the excess of the sensible within the sensible, and the genuine matter of art. As such, it escapes any straightforward materialism, as well as any form of idealism, or spiritualism. It could be characterised as hyletics. For reasons that I will clarify later on, I prefer to refer to it as an aesthetics of metaphor, or a metaphoric. Why metaphor? Simply because, twisting free of its own, deeply entrenched metaphysical interpretation, metaphor can be seen as the image or trope, applicable to art in general, which reveals the excess of the sensible in the sensible, or the way in which any given image is virtually more than it actually is. -

The inspiration for this project often came from mathematics in general and from geometry in particular: Just as propositions were ordered in a geometrical demonstration, the argument went, so should propositions be ordered in an overall system of knowledge. Science, it was thought, had to proceed more geometrico. I offer a new interpretation of ‘science more geometrico’ based on an analysis of the explanatory forms used in certain branches of geometry. These branches were optics, as- tronomy, and mechanics; the so-called subalternate, subordinate, or mixed-mathematical sciences. -

According to the material conception, the laws of logic obtain independently of our consciousness of them, because they are either objective ‘laws of truth’, laws governing linguistic practices, or laws innate to our cognitive capacities. But it is often overlooked that this view of logic faces intractable difficulties in providing an adequate explanation of how these laws govern the mind. (Both rationalist and empiricist attempts to offer an explanation have been made.) The material conception immunizes logic from these problems, since it assumes that they do not concern logic, but merely concern epistemological views about what it is to have knowledge of logic. -

The similarities between the Aristotelian Problemata and the Hippocratic Airs, Waters, Places allowed Girolamo Cardano and Lodovico Settala, among others, to blur the distinctions between natural philosophical and medical authorities. Philological and historical considerations of these texts as well as judgments about authenticity were colored by the belief that these works were useful for humoral physiology and offered insights into the unity of ancient and modern knowledge. 1 Introduction Late-Renaissance Italian intellectual debate often involved attempts to change or defend the status of particular disciplines. The hierarchy of subjects was frequently a matter for dispute, and leading intellectual figures attempted to raise the status of their particular fields. The paper also considers the role of computational ontologies in the management and organisation of philosophical contents. key words Ferrater Mora, ontology, ontologies, intellectual history, philosophy of history, integrationism. 1. Three theses on Ferrater Let me begin directly by spelling out the three theses that I would like to defend1: 1. Ferrater’s brand of intellectual history — I am referring to the history con- structed in his Dictionary2 and related articles — constitutes a second-order semantic history. 1 This paper is a revised version of a text presented at a conference devoted to the philosopher and essayist Josep Ferrater Mora (Barcelona 1912-1991) in commemoration of the cente- nary of his birth, organised jointly by the IEC and the Ferrater Mora Chair in Barcelona and Girona, respectively, on 7 and 8 November 2012. -
Natural Philosophy
Natural philosophy Natural philosophy or philosophy of nature (from Latin philosophia naturalis) was the philosophical study of nature and the physical universe that was dominant before the development of modern science. It is considered to be the precursor of natural science. From the ancient world, starting with Aristotle, to the 19th century, the term "natural philosophy" was the common term used to describe the practice of studying nature. It was in the 19th century that the A celestial map from the 17th century, by the concept of "science" received its modern shape with Dutch cartographer Frederik de Wit new titles emerging such as "biology" and "biologist", "physics" and "physicist" among other technical fields and titles; institutions and communities were founded, and unprecedented applications to and interactions with other aspects of society and culture occurred.[1] Isaac Newton's book Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica (1687 ), whose title translates to "Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy", reflects the then-current use of the words "natural philosophy", akin to "systematic study of nature". Even in the 19th century, a treatise by Lord Kelvin and Peter Guthrie Tait, which helped define much of modern physics, was titled Treatise on Natural Philosophy (1867 ). In the German tradition, Naturphilosophie (philosophy of nature) persisted into the 18th and 19th century as an attempt to achieve a speculative unity of nature and spirit. Some of the greatest names in German philosophy are associated with this movement, including Goethe, Hegel and Schelling. Naturphilosophie was associated with Romanticism and a view that regarded the natural world as a kind of giant organism, as opposed to the philosophical approach of figures such as John Locke and Isaac Newton who espoused a more mechanical view of the world, regarding it as being like a machine. -
