FROM THE PRESIDENT RCSC Board Meeting Deloittes Aug 21, 2013 Dear Coves, Vinnies Night Patrol Aug 27, 2013 Denis Smith tracked down a very special guest for us this week - John Rezek - the Editor-in-chief of The Community Service Meeting Rotarian Magazine (from RI headquarters in Evanston, Sep 13, 2013 Chicago). John was in town thanks to Tourism NSW, on a reconnaissance for all the Rotarians keen to visit RCSC Board Meeting next year for the very big International Deloitttes Sep 18, 2013 Conference we are hosting. Denis organised several of us (Andrew, Evan from the E-Club and yours truly) to be RCSC Board Meeting guests of Adrian Skeggs (our ex-Wallaby Club visitor) Deloittes on another Tall Ship cruise on the Harbour on Oct 16, 2013 Thursday ... see photo below.

Rotary Charity Regatta Then on Friday morning John attended our Breakfast and gave us some great feedback, Nov 15, 2013 and a couple of questions: RCSC Board Meeting • How helpful are communications from RI?

Deloittes • Do Rotarians (like us) read & like The Rotarian as well as their regional magazine? Nov 20, 2013 • What can we (at The Rotarian) do to make your work - at the club level - easier? I’m going to attempt a straw poll over the next few weeks to give John some answers – RCSC Board Meeting please help. Deloittes Dec 18, 2013 Otherwise, our breakfast last week was awash with other visiting Rotarians including a District Conference couple from Sao Paulo, Brazil and friends including Andrea’s Mum, and Guigs’ host Mum. Feb 28, 2014 - Mar 01, 2014 And it was great to see several members returning including Rob Campbell, Jennifer Hewett (who will be our guest speaker on September 6th) and Fiona and David Gawel - RI Convention please keep bringing Max and Rex. Sid Berkowitz gave a wonderfully passionate Jun 01, 2014 - Jun 04, 2014 presentation on Police Legacy and Kevin Beltrame brought us nicely up-to-date on the Rocks Community - thank you Kevin.

Which brings me to this week, where we welcome our new District 9675 Governor, Garry Browne. A Rotarian with great energy and passion - Garry is a member of the Sydney Club and is keen to kick off a great year for the new bigger District. He also wants us to work together with other clubs and there are several occasions for Sydney Cove including involvement with Rose Bay in the City2Surf, and with both Sydney and Darling Harbour in events later this year and next (watch this space).

Garry’s visit is also an opportunity to announce a new Club and District project for this year – bringing Dr Seye Abimbola back to ‘complete’ his PhD studies. You will recall Seye visited Australia as an Ambassadorial Scholar in 2009/10 - during which he finished a top level Master’s degree with Alex Martiniuk and the George Institute.

As a sequel, Seye is now returning on Saturday next, July 20th for three more years - with huge help from the University of Sydney, several of our Club’s generous donors, together with direct contributions from the Club and the District. Seye’s project will focus on ‘The distribution of Primary Health Care in Nigeria’s rural and remote communities’. So he is combining the advancement of his education - that will bolster his prospects of reaching a high position in the Nigerian Health system - with a very practical study that will assist Polio eradication and the containment of HIV/Aids in his country. It’s a project that we will be proud to support.

Seye and his wife Oine may be joining us for breakfast on July 26th, together with Mark Ella, as our guest speaker - so that will be a great breakfast to attend. But they all are I hear you say!!! Jeremy Wright

CHALLENGE

Science & Engineering Challenge 2013: UNDERWAY

Up to 400 Year 10 students from eight Sydney high schools are attending each day at The Science & Engineering Challenge being held at Macquarie University and Ausgrid Training Centre Silverwater. The intent is to introduce students to the value and fun of a science and engineering career. The Rotary Club of Sydney Cove members are supporting the science and engineering post graduates who lead the event.

It is a fun day interacting with young people and fortunately we do not need specific expertise, but only mentoring and encouragement skills. Some vacancies for volunteers still exist for August, so contact Tom Gervay if you want a rewarding experience by email ASAP [email protected] Tom Gervay

CITY2SURF: TBI

Homeless Street Soccer

Receiving birthday cards and Christmas presents, while not being the most important events in our lives, bring us joy and happiness. Sadly many of The Big Issue vendors are socially isolated and do not get birthday cards and/or Christmas presents. Here at The Big Issue in Sydney we try our best to remember each vendor’s birthday and give a present to every vendor at Christmas but with 70 vendors our budget is often stretched. Would you help us put a little joy and happiness into the lives of our vendors? Staff members and vendors are walking in this year’s City2Surf to raise money to make our giving easier and where possible more generous (Christmas is always a stretch on the budget).

Please donate to the first ever City2Surf team on August 11 to raise funds for homeless and disadvantaged The Big Issue (TBI) vendors in NSW. Simply click on: https://city2surf2013.everydayhero.com/au/team-the-big-issue-celebrates

Alternatively, support Marcus who has run it 4 times but this will be his first time walking with The Big Issue. He was 179kg in 2004 and has lost 60kg since then. He is competitive and his goal now is to walk the 14km at a high speed walk in 2 and a half hours, raising awareness of TBI. STOP PRESS: Susan Leith-Miller (NSW State Operations Manager, The Big Issue) will be coming to our July 26 breakfast meeting for a brief update on the support for The Big Issue City2Surf team and the Sydney Street Soccer player who is going to Poland for the Homeless Street Soccer World Cup. We have also invited Marcus from our Street Soccer Team who is also looking for support for the team in the City2Surf fun run.

CITY2SURF: AUG 11

We already have the 14 volunteers we were asked to provide as marshals (you know who you are, and thank you very much!) for the City2Surf extravaganza on Sunday 11 August.

HOWEVER, Fairfax (the organisers) have suddenly realised they need another 20 volunteers, so if you haven't already volunteered, here is your big chance! If you can't volunteer yourself, how about "volunteering" a loved one? Remember, for each volunteer, the Club will receive $56, and the volunteer will receive a lovely t-shirt and safety vest.

For each volunteer, please let me know: • name • mobile phone number • t-shirt size (S, M, L, XL, XXL) Details are still to emerge, but I believe the time commitment will be from about 7am to about 1pm, and the location is in the Eastern Suburbs.

Many thanks Ted McKeown

There is also a flyer with more information under "Download" to the left, on the Club Intranet.

We are also planning a VIP session after the show with tickets at $100 each. ($50 preferred seating for the show, refreshments and "after show" party plus a $50 voluntary donation component). If you are considering purchasing these for yourself and friends, they are now available on line via the website above. Derek White

ANNOUNCEMENTS: JUL 12

John Walker spruiked the Choral Grand Prix, our next Club fundraiser on August 17 in partnership with Sydney Eisteddfod. John would like all members to sell tickets and promote the event to organisations through work, community and family. To that end he has a series of appropriate letters for Coves to use so please contact John as needed and get those ticket sales happening. Eva Gerber thanked all Coves who donated $9 for blankets for Vinnies Night Patrol customers; it was a wonderful response and next patrol is 31 July so you can still assist. Denis Smith is asking Coves to support the first ever Street Soccer team led by long term member Marcus entering the City2Surf; you can donate through the Street Soccer website. Denis is also looking for volunteers for the major BBQs at Garden Island planned as part of the Fleet Review event on the October long weekend. Vanessa Woodley reminded Coves to farewell Exchange Student Guigs as he heads back to Brazil this month. The beautiful Alex has already returned home and will also be greatly missed. Two new students are arriving, so please consider hosting for a period of time; one from Belgium and the other from Austria. Gus McBride from Sydney City Rotaract announced their forthcoming Gala Dinner on 7 September to raise funds for a club trip to Nepal in November to set up a medical camp amongst other projects; details will follow. Michael Maher expertly auctioned 4 donated tickets to the Reds/Waratahs rugby game on Saturday night and $100 went into the Pretty Officer’s tin. President Jeremy advised that membership fees will not be increasing. There will be a family membership fee. Subs need to be paid by the end of August if Coves want to be listed in the new directory ...

... and from Ted McKeown: I am proposing a bushwalk on Saturday 24 August. Note the date in your diary if you would like to come. I propose that we walk Mark Foy's Track, built by Mark Foy of department store fame in about 1904 to take his guests (he also owned the Hydro Majestic Hotel) out to Point Pilcher and down into the Grand Canyon. The track is almost forgotten these days, but offers great views into the Grose Valley, and of course the canyon itself. More details closer to the day ...
