Influence of Traditional Art of Africa on Contemporary Art Praxis: the Ibibio Funerary Art Example

This has resulted in the misconception that traditional African art contributes little or nothing to the development of contemporary art. This paper, in an attempt to dispel such misconception, projects an aspect of indigenous Ibibio art praxis - funerary art to reveal Ibibio art culture‟s influence on contemporary art praxis. The objectives are to identify traditional Ibibio funerary art forms; highlight its transformation; and examine its influence on contemporary art praxis. It benefits from analogue and digital library sources, and information sought from interviews of knowledgeable persons in the locality. Findings reveal that traditional Ibibio funerary art forms, which include ekpu carvings, paintings and drawings on ‟Nwommo‟and „Iso Nduongo‟ shrines and ekpo mask carvings, form a bedrock on which a great deal of contemporary art praxis within Ibibio land and its environs rests, as contemporary African art is an extension of traditional African art. The paper, therefore, recommends that more scholastic work be carried out on African art cultures for more revelations of their contributions to the development of contemporary art. -

It plays an intrinsic role in almost all segments of the people‟s cultural life. In the Ọjị Ezinihitte festivity the „kola tradition‟ is meaningfully and elaborately celebrated. This article examines the importance of Ọjị within the context of Ezinihitte socio-cultural heritage, and equally accounts for continuity and change within it. An eclectic framework in data collection was utilized for this research. This involved the use of key-informant interviews, direct observation as well as extant textual sources (both published and un-published), including archival documents, for the purposes of the study. In terms of analysis, the study utilized the qualitative analytical approach. This was employed towards ensuring that the three basic purposes of this study – exploration, description and explanation – are well articulated and attained. The paper provided background for a proper understanding of the „sacred origin‟ of the Ọjị festive celebration. Through a vivid account of the festival‟s processes and rituals, it achieved a reconstruction of the festivity‟s origins and evolutionary trajectories and argues the festival as reflecting the people‟s spirit of fraternity and conviviality. -

C B. B. Okon Civil Engineering Department Faculty of Engineering University of Uyo Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria Abstract Comparative analysis of public and private borehole water supply sources in Uruan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, was conducted in order to examine their qualities. A total of 13 water samples collected from 10 randomly selected private and 3 functional public boreholes in the area were analysed using standard analytical techniques and instruments. Most of the physicochemical parameters of samples from the two sources were within the acceptable limits of the World Health Organisation (WHO) for drinking water. Eight different bacteria species were isolated and identified. They include Escherichia coli (18.75%), Bacillus subtilis (15.625%), Streptococcus faecalis (15.625%), Proteus vulgaris (12.50%), Klebsiella aerogenes (12.50%), Micrococcus varians (9.375%), Clostridium perfringens (9.37%) and Staphylococcus aureus (6.25%). Total viable count on private borehole water samples ranged from 1.6x103 to 5.5x103cfu/ml while that of the public was 9x101cfu/ml. In the private source, E.coli ranged from 1x100 to 4x100cfu/100ml, whereas 4x100 to 3.4x101cfu/100ml was recorded for the coliforms. Streptococcus faecalis and Clostridium perfringens ranged from 1x100 to 3x100cfu/100ml and 1x100 to 2x100cfu/100ml respectively, and did not meet the approved drinking water standard. There was no growth of indicator organism in samples from the public boreholes. -

A Socio- Economic History of Alcohol in Southeastern Nigeria Since 1890
CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION Background to the Study Alcohol has various socio-economic and cultural functions among the people of southeastern Nigeria. It is used in rituals, marriages, oath taking, festivals and entertainment. It is presented as a mark of respect and dignity. The basic alcoholic beverage produced and consumed in the area was palm -wine tapped from the oil palm tree or from the raffia- palm. Korieh notes that, from the fifteenth century contacts between the Europeans and peoples of eastern Nigeria especially during the Atlantic slave trade era, brought new varieties of alcoholic beverages primarily, gin and whisky.1 Thus, beginning from this period, gins especially schnapps from Holland became integrated in local culture of the peoples of Eastern Nigeria and even assumed ritual position.2 From the 1880s, alcohol became accepted as a medium of exchange for goods and services and a store of wealth.3 By the early twentieth century, alcohol played a major role in the Nigerian economy as one third of Nigeria‘s income was derived from import duties on liquor.4 Nevertheless, prior to the contact of the people of Southern Nigeria with the Europeans, alcohol was derived mainly from the oil palm and raffia palm trees which were numerous in the area. These palms were tapped and the sap collected and drunk at various occasions. From the era of the Trans- Atlantic slave trade, the import of gin, rum and whisky became prevalent.These were used in ex-change for slaves and to pay comey – a type of gratification to the chiefs. Even with the rise of legitimate trade in the 19th century alcoholic beverages of various sorts continued to play important roles in international trade.5 Centuries of importation of gin into the area led to the entrenchment of imported gin in the culture of the people. -

My paper focuses on the representation of this war in popular culture – with an emphasis on film, fictional and non-fictional literature. It interrogates the role that fictional and non-fictional narration play in the collective and individual memory of Nigerians in general and the Igbos in particular. It also looks at the link between the depiction of the war in popular culture and the renewed agitation for the nationhood of Biafra, as since the 2000s, there has been renewed campaigning by young people of Igbo ethnicity for the creation of the Republic of Biafra. This research particularly concentrates on two organizations that are involved in this struggle: the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). It is my position that popular culture constitutes important material for the study and understanding of historical events and periods of time, while it also enhances our understanding of the ways in which these past events may have an influence in the present. -

The recent upsurge for self determination and referendum among distinct ethnic and linguistic groups need not be nipped in the bud; rather the attendant issue of showcasing genuine identities of peoples has become very relevant. Alao, D.O Ph.D, Ndem, Bassey Ph.D, Atere, Olusegun, Clement, Nwogwugwu, N. and Ojo, O.1 BABCOCK UNIVERSITY, ILISHAN REMO, OGUN STATE,NIGERIA ABSTRACT The Supreme Court Judgment of June 12, 2012 transferring 76 oil wells to Akwa Ibom State following the litigation by Cross River State, brought to the fore the politics of oil resources This motivates the study to examining the mechanism for resolving resource conflicts in Nigeria.. This paper adopted the historical, descriptive and analytical approach as its method of study and qualitative in nature. The study found that political approach and incorporation of traditional norms and values are preferable as a means of solving socio-economic differences among friendly states rather than resorting to litigation. It concludes such disputes are manifestation weak state reflecting in lack of effective institutional mechanisms for resolving conflicts. The study recommends an inclusive mechanism in resource allocation like in Alaska while conciliation and arbitration method should be adopted at the expense of litigation in line with constitutional provisions as this will gradually demystify statetism. 1. INTRODUCTION The issue of boundary and the administration of resources along the boundary line will for a long time constitute a challenge that the government in Nigeria would have to cope with in order to ensure peaceful coexistence among various ethnic nationalities. The terms "border" and "boundary" are physical in origin. Johnson and Machelsen, (1997) observe in most cases, it has a wider meanings in political and economic geography than “frontiers,” which refers to a special case of border used to divide the sovereign limits of adjacent independent according to Guo (2005). -

[email protected] ABSTRACT This study reports the results of a survey of the available holdings of information resources on Ibibio culture in the University of Uyo Library and Akwa Ibom State Library. The specific objectives of the study were to determine the different size of information resources on funeral, fattening (Mbobo), taboos, myths as well as dissemination in the University of Uyo and Akwa Ibom State Libraries. Survey research design was used for the study. 3,854 information sources in the University of Uyo and Akwa Ibom State Libraries constituted the population of the study, with all estimated 2,276 (100%) forming the sample size of the study. Checklist was used to obtain data for the study. Chi-square was used for the data analysis. The major research findings based on the postulated objectives of the study revealed that there was a significant difference in the information resources available in the University of Uyo Library and Akwa Ibom State Library. The study concluded that libraries must oversee additional problems and increase the acquisition of information resources on Ibibio culture to further cub the dwindling nature of its collection and possible extinction of this information resources.
