Golf in Russia Golf in Russia Is Still at Its Early Stages but It Has Already Become One of the Hottest Spots for Golf Industry GORKI Golf & Resort Golf in Russia Golf in Russia is still at its early stages but it has already become one of the hottest spots for golf industry development. The first golf course was founded in 1989 in Moscow, and the first professional championship-level course was built only in 1993 in the Moscow region, but for a long time golf courses in Moscow remained closed. Now basically all the golf courses are in the Moscow region. However, one of the regions actively developing at the moment is the North-Western one. St. Petersburg in general is a novice in the field of golf, like all of Russia, and until recently had only one golf course in St. Petersburg which was a 3-hole course with driving range of the Dune Golf Club located in the resort area. No other project of 18-hole golf courses was that successful before the GORKI Golf & Resort project had been implemented. In Russia there is still a stereotype that golf is a game for rich men in adulthood, so GORKI Golf & Resort is working to dispel these convoluted beliefs. The implementation of GORKI Golf & Resort project was carried out in 2010. The architect of the project was chosen by the famous Finnish architect Lassi-Pekka Tilander, whose work was highly appreciated by the experts of the European Golf Association and included in the rating of the top 100 golf courses in Europe. In 2011 the construction of the course began, in May 2013 the golf academy was opened and the first three holes of the championship course, in 2014 - 9 holes of the championship course, the opening of the Restaurant and the Clubhouse. In September 2015, a grand opening of 18 holes championship course. Now GORKI is a golf resort of international level with an 18-hole championship course and a developed infrastructure. Several Russian and international competitions have already been held on its territory. The course certainly deserves attention of the foreign golfers. It is built in accordance with the standards of best course management - R&A and is the Scottish Inland Links Course. By all standards, such course can host international competitions of any level. A major achievement of GORKI Golf & Resort - in 2018 by World Golf Award GORKI Golf & Resort was voted in two nominations: “Russia’s Best Golf Course 2018” and “Russia’s Best Golf Hotel 2018”. GORKI Golf & Resort The infrastructure of Resort is developing from year to year. The tempera mentality of the northern climate is easily dealt with when, after a long game, players reach the comfortable changing rooms and rest area. On the territory of Resort are already built GORKI Golf & Resort Hotel 4 *, the first golf hotel in Saint Petersburg as well as villas for sale for those who want to permanently reside in the resort. From June 2019 GORKI Golf & Resort Hotel 4* will also include SPA facilities: outdoor heated swimming pool, jacuzzi, saunas and gym. The hotel’s decoration reflects the general concept of the resort. Ecology and practicality is felt in everything - rest, communication and time spent in nature. These elegant interiors, formed primarily by natural wood and its lighter shade, are reminiscent of the Scandinavian minimalism of the 1960s. The hotel is open to both lovers of the game and those who would like to relax in comfort with privacy and exclusivity. It offers 26 standard rooms, 4 family rooms with loft, 2 junior suites rooms with living room and bedroom, as well as 2 luxury suites. 2 two-bedroomed suites boast stunning panoramic views over the beautiful Links course. It is important to note that golf and other sporting activities are not the only things on offer. The hotel is an ideal place for large events and business groups providing a conference room and the conference hall both equipped with all the necessary modern equipment required for meetings and presentations. From the conference room it is possible to access the roof and continue discussions on the terrace with wonderful course views. The efficient design of the conference hall means that it can be quickly transformed into the perfect place for receptions of any kind. It is also possible to have a buffet table on the open terraces. GORKI Golf & Resort Hotel is ideal for private events. It offers a wide-range of opportunities when it comes to organizing weddings, banquets or corporate events all with the support of experienced staff who have long been involved in all things relating to hospitality and events. Categorized as a 4-star hotel, the rooms are supplied with everything needed. In the area around the reception on the ground floor there is a bar for guests to enjoy both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. There is also the opportunity to purchase essential goods and souvenirs in the hotel lobby. Among the many advantages of GORKI Golf & Resort, there are 8 comfortable panoramic cottages with a total capacity of up to 40 people. Cozy golf bungalows are ideal for both a small family and a big company. Panoramic Club House with a Family Restaurant of Chef’s country cuisine towering at the coast of real Scottish golf course. Beloved by all, the unique house recipes are collected for you in every single part of the menu: cheese pancakes with jam, the fragrant soup with pike perch and salmon, tender grilled beef steaks and many others. Here you feel yourself as a host at your own golf villa: you can spend romantic evening close to a cozy fireplace, prepare fragrant tea on an open terrace overlooking a sunset or have a picnic with all your family on the bank of the picturesque lake. You can even angle and grill the fish on the terrace of a panoramic bungalow or ask our Chef to cook it for you. Unlimited golf 365 days, 24/7 The cost of green fee at GORKI includes unlimited golf! This means that paying for green fee once, a golfer can play an unlimited number of times, within 24 hours! This opportunity can be an especially great option to implement due to the northern geographical location, where the midnight sun sheds its intoxicating light across the area from early June to early July. During this special time of the year GORKI invites golfers from different countries to play golf for a full 24 hours enjoying the famous St. Petersburg White Nights on the course. This warm and wonderful summer time provides the perfect backdrop for the GORKI White Night Golf Tournament – an unforgettable experience of playing golf with the glowing golf balls! Depending on the season, everyone can find something suitable and spend time pleasantly. Fans of the ingenious weekend will appreciate the activity program in the area of 70 hectares. Take part in excursions on golf carts, manifest yourself in foot-golf, take pictures of fascinating views, or fly a helicopter. This is not a complete list of available activities. Nowadays, GORKI Golf & Resort is open during a winter season as well, and can welcome guests all-year round. The guests of the resort can arrange winter fishing and enjoy other activities as skiing and ice-skating and even play winter golf which is one of the unique features not every golf club can offer! Sightseeing and golf The 2017 World Travel Awards has named Russia’s St. Petersburg the best tourist destination in Europe for the second time since 2015. Also, for the third consecutive year St. Petersburg was named the best tourist destination in Russia according to the Travelers’ Choice rating on the travel website TripAdvisor. A city of sensational architecture, magnificent landscapes, innumerable canals, unique galleries, colorful history and poetic White Nights, St Petersburg definitely possesses a charm of its own, which establishes it as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. For your trip to St Petersburg a unique combination of tourism and golf can be offered. GORKI Golf & Resort is located about 50 kilometers away from St Petersburg, the road from the city center takes just over an hour. A distinct advantage for guests of resort - is its closeness to the pearls of architecture of the city and its region. Golf Tourism: [email protected] .

Soviet Art has indeed become the theme of this issue, with a painting by Yuri Pimenov ‘Ball at Olympia’s House’ on the cover. In this month’s ‘Russian Reflections’ section, Tobie Mathews offers a chilling insight into literary censorship under Stalin, a time when Osip Mandelshtam (before he died in a labour camp) quipped: “Poetry is taken so seriously in Russia that people are even shot for it.” We all known that Alaska was Russian, but do we know how, and under what circumstances, the Russians sold off these extensive territories? In this issue we publish the first of a two-part series by Yury Samoilov on the sale of Alaska.

Following the predawn air raids on the IS targets in Syria, Turkish police arrested almost 300 suspected members of IS and pro-Kurdish militant groups nationwide, in one of Turkey’s biggest recent crackdowns on extremists. Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said that the bombing operation had “100 percent” achieved its goals and had “successfully eliminated the targets” targeted by three Turkish F-16s. The air raids were ordered in the wake of a suicide bombing blamed on IS that killed 32 activists on the Syrian border on Monday and cross-border clashes Thursday that claimed the life of a Turkish soldier. The Turkish war planes dropped their charges while in Turkish air- space and did not enter Syrian airspace, the CNN-Turk television channel reported. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights moni- toring group said nine IS fighters were killed in the attacks and 12 wounded. “Turkey will show the strongest reaction to the slightest movement that threatens it,” Davutoglu said. “The operation against IS reached its target and will not stop,” he added.
