    CHAPTER - IV PROFILE OF THE STUDY AREA THANJAVUR DISTRICT PROFILE The study area chosen for the research is Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu. Thanjavur district is bounded on the north east by Nagapattinam district, north be Tiruchirappalli, Perabalur and Cuddalore districts, east by Thiruvarur district, south-east by Palk strait, west by Pudukkottai and north-west by Tiruchirappalli district. Geocode North Latitude 10o 08’ to 11o 12’ East longitude 78o 48’ to 79o 38’ Agro Ecological Region : Region 8 : Semi-arid ecosystem (90%) – Eastern ghats, Tamil Nadu uplands – hot semiarid ecosystem with a crop growing period of 90 to 120 days. Region 18 : Coastal ecosystem (10%) – Eastern coastal plain hot sub – humid to semi-arid ecoregion and with a crop growing period of 90 to 210 days.     1 PERFORMANCE BUDGET 2007-2008 BACKWARD CLASSES, MOST BACKWARD CLASSES AND MINORITIES WELFARE DEPARTMENT 1.INTRODUCTION Protection of the interests of Backward Classes, Most Backward Classes and Denotified Communities and Minorities has always been an object of prime importance of the Government of Tamil Nadu for their Socio Educational and Economic upliftment. To achieve this end the Government of Tamil Nadu is implementing multifarious welfare schemes. No State can be called as truly advanced without advancement in education. On the basis of this concept utmost importance has always been given to remove the backwardness of the people of this State, by making significant budget allocation for implementation of various educational schemes. Backward Classes/Most Backward Classes/Denotified Communities constitute the major groups among the total population of the State. Corresponding author mail - [email protected] ABSTRACT Ground water is globally important for human consumption and support of life. Ground water resource is being detoriated by population explosion and other anthropogenic activities. Hence an attempt has been made to study the water quality parameters of ground water of Thanjavur district. The study revealed that the pH was found to be natural in all sample. The chloride was observed to be higher amount in sample 2. The fluoride content was also observed to be 2.91 in sample 2. The WQI was found to be the rating of good. Key words: ground water, suitability WQI, turbidity, fluoride. INTRODUCTION Groundwater is the most import source of water supply throughout the world. The quality of groundwater is reducing every day due to adverse human activities; residential industrial and agricultural empowering activities pollution of groundwater causes poor drinking water quality health hazards and high costs for alternative water supplies etc (UNESCO, 2007). Evaluation of groundwater quality is a necessary task for management of present and future water quality in Thanjavur district. Groundwater quality is mostly affected by natural geo chemical process such as mineral weathering, dissolution reactions and some anthropogenic activities like agriculture. Sewage disposal mining and industrial wastes etc (Goulding, 2000; Jalali, 2005a). Quality drinking water is essential for life.
