As your Wars of the Roses chairs, Teo Lamiot and I have been working hard with our crisis director, Sofia Filippa, and SMUNC Secretariat members to make this conference the best yet. If you have attended SMUNC before, I promise that this year will be even more full of surprise and intrigue than your last conference; if you are a newcomer, let me warn you of how intensely fun and challenging this conference will assuredly be. My own love for Model United Nations began when I co-chaired a committee for SMUNC (The Arab Spring), which was one of my very first experiences as a member of the Society for International Affairs at Stanford (the umbrella organization for the MUN team), and I thoroughly enjoyed it. SAA2015 – Seminar 37 – Shakespeare and Contagion – Abstracts Seminar Leaders: Mary Floyd-Wilson (University of North Carolina) and Darryl Chalk (University of Southern Queensland) Sabina Amanbayeva University of Delaware [email protected] “Falstaff’s Poisonous Affects: Politics and Physiology in 1 Henry IV” My paper is focused on the formation of intimacy through laughter in Shakespeare’s 1 Henry IV (1597). Using the framework of historical phenomenology and affect studies, I show how Falstaff’s jokes about his own body can actually be read as physiological manipulation and a political act. Early modern texts consistently associate the formation of illicit attachments with the work of poison and the subtle cunning of underworld figures. For instance, Thomas Dekker’s cony-catching pamphlets The Belman of London (1608) and Lanthorn and Candle-light (1608) take it as their guiding principle that cony-catchers commit their villanies through “breathes” and “vapours” that insidiously spread everywhere. A similar tactic, I argue, is at work in 1 Henry IV, where Falstaff’s jokes, called “vain comparatives” in the play, re-structure the relationship between the body and its environment by his successive spinning of new metaphors and thus new ways to imagine relations between self and other. The word-play between Hal and Falstaff becomes then a sort of titillation, playing with the body, as their mutual witticisms and jokes successively touch and re-touch each other’s contours. The essay contributes to the on-going conversation on affect and intimacy by bringing to the fore the physicality of early modern laughter and its ability to work like “poison” or contagious “vapour” in its creation of illicit intimacies. -

Nel primo capitolo traccio la presenza di Armin nei quattro testi, individuando cioè gli indizi che rimandano alla sua figura e alla tipologia di comicità tipica dei suoi personaggi precedenti in Shakespeare e di quelli presenti nelle sue stesse opere. I quattro personaggi creati per lui da Shakespeare vengono analizzati in profondità nei seguenti capitoli, raggruppandoli a seconda dei loro ruoli sociali o professioni. Nel secondo capitolo mi occupo dei fools criminali, considerando Pericles e The Winter’s Tale, dove i personaggi di Boult e Autolycus sono rispettivamente un ruffiano di bordello e un delinquente di strada. Nel terzo capitolo mi concentro invece sui personaggi che esibiscono o vengono discriminati per una reale od imputata deficienza congenita (natural folly): il principe Cloten in Cymbeline e Caliban in The Tempest. Per ciascun caso discuto il rapporto del personaggio con le fonti shakespeariane ed eventualmente con la tradizione comica precedente o contemporanea a Shakespeare, il ruolo all’interno del testo, e il modo in cui il personaggio suscita l’effetto comico. -

It is likely that is was commissioned by Henry Percy the Ninth Earl of Northumberland (1564-1632), a well known Elizabethan intellectual and cultural figure. He was known as the ‗Wizard Earl‘ because of his scientific and alchemical experiments and his large library. In 1594 Henry Percy married Dorothy Devereux sister of Robert Devereux, Second Earl of Essex. His southern estates were Petworth and Syon House, the latter he acquired through his marriage to Dorothy Devereux. He was a non-Catholic but argued for Catholic toleration and tried to negotiate with James VI of Scotland to reduce Catholic persecution when he became king of England. This did not happen and Henry‘s second cousin and agent Thomas Percy became one of the five conspirators in the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. As a result Henry Percy suspected of complicity and spent the next 17 years in the Tower of London and was financially ruined by a fine of £30,000. -

As Fate Would Have It Pat Sajak and Vanna White would have been quite at home in New Orleans in January 1828. It was announced back then in L’Abeille de Nouvelle-Orléans (New Orleans Bee) that “Malcolm’s Celebrated Wheel of Fortune” was to “be handsomely illuminated this and to-morrow evenings” on Chartres Street “in honour of the occasion”. The occasion was the “Grand Jackson Celebration” where prizes totaling $121,800 were to be awarded. The “Wheel of Fortune” was known as Rota Fortunae in medieval times, and it captured the concept of Fate’s capricious nature. Chaucer employed it in the “Monk’s Tale”, and Dante used it in the “Inferno”. Shakespeare had many references, including “silly Fortune’s wildly spinning wheel” in “Henry V”. And Hamlet had those “slings and arrows” with which to contend. Dame Fortune could indeed be “outrageous”. Rota Fortunae by the Coëtivy Master, 15th century In New Orleans her fickle wheel caused Ignatius Reilly’s “pyloric valve” to close up. John Kennedy Toole’s fictional protagonist sought comfort in “The Consolation of Philosophy” by Boethius, but found none. Boethius wrote, “Are you trying to stay the force of her turning wheel? Ah! Dull-witted mortal, if Fortune begins to stay still, she is no longer Fortune.” Ignatius Reilly found “Consolation” in the “Philosophy” of Boethius. And Boethius had this to say about Dame Fortune: “I know the manifold deceits of that monstrous lady, Fortune; in particular, her fawning friendship with those whom she intends to cheat, until the moment when she unexpectedly abandons them, and leaves them reeling in agony beyond endurance.” Ignatius jotted down his fateful misfortunes in his lined Big Chief tablet adorned with a most impressive figure in full headdress. -
