    RIHA Journal 0241 | 30 March 2020 National Religiosity and Visual Propaganda: the Spanish Church of the Saints Ildephonsus and Thomas of Villanova in Rome1 Pablo González Tornel Abstract The construction of the church of Sts Ildephonsus and Thomas of Villanova on the Via Sistina in Rome began in 1667. Headquarters of the Spanish Discalced Augustinians in Rome, the church was directly inspired by Francesco Borromini's Chapel of the Three Magi (Cappella dei Re Magi), and its artistic iconography featured a comprehensive program of Spanish political propaganda. The church was decorated as a monument to the Immaculate Conception, the favoured devotional cult of the Spanish monarchy, and its Marian content was reinforced by the paintings of the Virgins of Copacabana and Guadalupe, patrons of Peru and Mexico respectively. The entire ensemble, including the dedication of the church to the Spanish saints Ildephonsus and Thomas of Villanova, transformed the temple into a celebration of the Iberian monarchy. [1] The main headquarters of the Spanish Discalced Augustinians in Italy is located in the Via Sistina in Rome, on the slope of the Pincian hill.     Architectural Temperance Spain and Rome, 1700–1759 Architectural Temperance examines relations between Bourbon Spain and papal Rome (1700–1759) through the lens of cultural politics. With a focus on key Spanish architects sent to study in Rome by the Bourbon Kings, the book also discusses the establishment of a program of architectural educa- tion at the newly-founded Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. Victor Deupi explores why a powerful nation like Spain would temper its own building traditions with the more cosmopolitan trends associated with Rome; often at the expense of its own national and regional traditions. Through the inclusion of previously unpublished documents and images that shed light on the theoretical debates which shaped eighteenth-century architecture in Rome and Madrid, Architectural Temperance provides an insight into readers with new insights into the cultural history of early modern Spain. Via della Madonna dei Monti, rione Monti . E’ il capolavoro di Giacomo della Porta1, con armoniosa facciata a due ordini: lesene corinzie in quello inferiore, formanti cinque campate con portale e nicchie laterali; composite quelle superiori a tre campate e raccordi a volute, con finestrone a colonne e timpano, nicchie nei lati. Interno a una navata e a croce latina, con volta a botte, cupola e abside decorate da stucchi e affreschi di Cristofano Casciani e altri (1620 circa). L’ultimo altare sinistro racchiude il corpo del francese San Giuseppe Labre, che, vissuto per umiltà da mendicante, morì qui presso nel 1783. Sotto la mensa la figura giacente del santo di 1 Giacomo Della Porta (Genova 1533 - Roma 1602), allievo e aiuto del Vignola, a Roma costruì palazzi e chiese. Sua la fontana di piazza Colonna e quella delle Tartarughe, la facciata della chiesa del Gesù. Realizzò, su progetto di Michelangelo, la cupola di San Pietro. Da Enciclopedia Treccani. 1 Achille Albacini del 1892. Era detto il "santo dei pidocchi" perchè non li uccideva in quanto creature di Dio. A sinistra della chiesa, un ampio palazzo conventuale a mattoni in vista con grande portale, una grande lapide ricorda che fu contruito da Urbano VIII. Oggi è sede di facoltà universitaria. Nella vicina piazzetta che porta il nome della chiesa: fontana, di Giacomo della Porta, del 1588, restaurata nell’Ottocento. Notare la palazzina bianca settecentesca di quattro piani, con bel portoncino ornato e balconcino a mensole, caratteristiche finestre ovali sul fianco destro.

    (098/8) San Carlo al Corso San Carlo al Corso (formally Santi Ambrogio e Carlo al Corso) is a 17th century minor basilica, a titular and conventual church at Via del Corso in the rione Campo Marzio. The dedication is jointly to St Ambrose and St Charles Borromeo, who are the most famous of the bishops of Milan. [1] It used to be the national church of the Duchy of Milan, but since the unification of Italy has been the regional church of Lombardy. It also contains the Chapel of St Olav, which is the national shrine in Rome for expatriates and pilgrims from Norway. [1] History The first church on the site was called San Niccolò del Tufo. The dedication was to St Nicholas of Myra. The first unambiguous reference is in a document in the archives of San Silvestro dated 1269, and the church is listed in the late mediaeval catalogues. [1] It was granted to the Lombard community by Pope Sixtus IV, after he had approved of the establishment of a Lombard Confraternity in 1471. They rededicated it to their patron St Ambrose, and restored the church. The work, which probably amounted to a rebuilding, was finished in 1520 after seven years' effort. It is on record that Baldassare Peruzzi and Perino del Vaga executed frescoes here. [1] In 1610 St Charles Borromeo was canonized, and it was this event that inspired the building of a much larger church just to the north of the old one. The result is the present edifice. The confraternity, now named the Archconfraternity of Saints Ambrose and Charles of the Lombard Nation, undertook to fund the project and obtained an initial donation from Milanese Cardinal Luigi Alessandro Omodei the Elder which enabled work to begin.

    (098/8) San Carlo al Corso San Carlo al Corso (formally Santi Ambrogio e Carlo al Corso) is a 17th century minor basilica, a titular and conventual church at Via del Corso in the rione Campo Marzio. The dedication is jointly to St Ambrose and St Charles Borromeo, who are the most famous of the bishops of Milan. [1] It used to be the national church of the Duchy of Milan, but since the unification of Italy has been the regional church of Lombardy. It also contains the Chapel of St Olav, which is the national shrine in Rome for expatriates and pilgrims from Norway. [1] History The first church on the site was called San Niccolò del Tufo. The dedication was to St Nicholas of Myra. The first unambiguous reference is in a document in the archives of San Silvestro dated 1269, and the church is listed in the late mediaeval catalogues. [1] It was granted to the Lombard community by Pope Sixtus IV, after he had approved of the establishment of a Lombard Confraternity in 1471. They rededicated it to their patron St Ambrose, and restored the church. The work, which probably amounted to a rebuilding, was finished in 1520 after seven years' effort. It is on record that Baldassare Peruzzi and Perino del Vaga executed frescoes here. [1] In 1610 St Charles Borromeo was canonized, and it was this event that inspired the building of a much larger church just to the north of the old one. The result is the present edifice. The confraternity, now named the Archconfraternity of Saints Ambrose and Charles of the Lombard Nation, undertook to fund the project and obtained an initial donation from Milanese Cardinal Luigi Alessandro Omodei the Elder which enabled work to begin.
