INTROPICA ISSN 1794-161X 7 21 - 30 SANTA MARTA, COLOMBIA, DICIEMBRE DE 2012 ESTRUCTURA POBLACIONAL Y VARIABILIDAD FENOTÍPICA DE Nerita tessellata (GASTROPODA: NERITIDAE) DE LA COSTA CARIBE COLOMBIANA DE SANTA MARTA (MAGDALENA) POPULATION STRUCTURE AND PHENOTYPIC VARIABILITY OF Nerita tessellata (GASTROPODA: NERITIDAE) FROM THE CARIBBEAN COAST OF SANTA MARTA (MAGDALENA) Giancarlo Javier Mazenett-Gutierrez, Julián Fernando Quintero-Galvis y Lyda Raquel Castro-García RESUMEN Con el propósito de analizar la estructura poblacional y la variabilidad fenotípica de Nerita tessellata en el litoral rocoso de las playas de Santa Marta, entre septiembre y noviembre de 2010, se muestrearon transectos perpendiculares a la línea de costa en los litorales rocosos de Bahía Concha, Punta Betín, Rodadero y Taganga. La estructura poblacional para N. tessellata (N=1544) se obtuvo mediante diagramas de frecuencia de tallas por la totalidad de individuos registrados en cada una de las estaciones y para las franjas intermareales (mesolitoral y supralitoral) se estimaron intervalos de confianza del 95%. Se efectuaron análisis de varianza (ANOVA) de una vía para establecer las diferencias en las tallas para las estaciones y las franjas intermareales. La variabilidad fenotípica se evaluó mediante la prueba de homogeneidad de Chi cuadrado (X2). Se identificó un patrón en cuanto a la distribución de las tallas de la especie N. tessellata, al evidenciar una tendencia a manifestar tallas mayores en la franja mesolitoral que en la supralitoral, mostrando un claro gradiente de tallas en donde las dimensiones de los individuos disminuyen a medida que se asciende en el gradiente vertical del litoral rocoso. Se apreciaron diferencias significativas a nivel interpoblacional entre las franjas intermareales y entre las estaciones de estudio (ANOVA, P<0,05). Se encontraron diferencias entre los sitios respecto a los fenotipos para la población de N. tessellata, manifestando polimorfismos en cuanto a atributos de coloración y bandeo. ABSTRACT In this study an analysis of the population structure and the phenotypic variability of Nerita tessellata in Santa Marta rocky’s shores was conducted. Coastline transects were sampled at the rocky bays of Bahia Concha, Punta Betín, Rodadero and Taganga, between September and November 2010. The population structure of N. tessellata (N=1544) was obtained using frequency charts of the sizes for the total of registered individuals per sample site and for the intertidal zones (midlittoral and supralittoral) confidence intervals (95%) were estimated. One-way ANOVA were performed to establish differences between sample site and intertidal fringes sizes. The phenotypic variability was evaluated through the homogeneity test of chi-square (X2). A distribution pattern based on the size of the specie N. tessellata was identified, with bigger sizes in the midlittoral fringe than in the supralittoral fringe, showing a distinctive size gradient in which individuals dimensions decrease as the vertical gradient of the rocky shore increases. Significant differences were also found among populations in the intertidal zones and the sample sites (ANOVA, P<0,05). Phenotypes differences among the sites for the populations of N. tessellata were found, showing polymorphism in terms of coloration attributes and bands. ABSTRACT The family Neritidae has representatives in tropical and subtropical regions that occur in a variety of environments, and its known fossil record dates back to the late Cretaceous. However there have been few studies of molecular phylogeny in this family. We performed a phylogenetic reconstruction of the family Neritidae using the COI (722 bp) and the 16S rRNA (559 bp) regions of the mitochondrial genome. Neighbor-joining, maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference were performed. The best phylogenetic reconstruction was obtained using the COI region, and we consider it an appropriate marker for phylogenetic studies within the group. Consensus analysis (COI +16S rRNA) generally obtained the same tree topologies and confirmed that the genus Nerita is monophyletic. The consensus analysis using parsimony recovered a monophyletic group consisting of the genera Neritina , Septaria , Theodoxus , Puperita , and Clithon , while in the Bayesian analyses Theodoxus is separated from the other genera.

Potts Abstract The distribution of the rocky littoral fauna at sites representing different degrees of exposure were examined around Little Cayman, It was found that the molluscan species composition, species morphology and vertical distribution was affected by the exposure of a particular site. Introduction During July and Augusc 1975 the Royal Society and Cayman Island Government supported an expedition to Little Cayman where aspects of the ecology of the island were studied. The Cayman Islands (between 1g015'N and 19O45'N latitude and 7g044' and 81°27'W longitude) are composed of three limestone islands which are formed by the projecting peaks of a range of submarine mountains that form the Cayman Ridge to the north west of Jamaica. According to Matley (1926) the central part of each island is comprised of an old "Bluff Limestone" while the periphery is made up of a mixture of coral sand, marl, and elevated limestone reef which has been weachered to form what is called the "Ironshore formation" (Doran i954, Idyll, 19663. The limestone shore is extensively eroded by the action of rain, the sea, and also the grazing action of some littoral molluscs and the abrasive action of the shells or spines of some species of mollusc and echinoderm, as described by Ginsburg (1953) for the Florida Keys region. It was this rock that was examined in the present work on littoral zonation. The Cayman Islands are particularly interesting because they form a discrete island unit lying in deep water midway between Jamaica, Cuba and the northern coast of South America and yet there have been few studies specifically relating to the littoral region to these islands.

  • Habitat Selection in Two Intertidal Snails, Genus <I>Nerita</I>
    BULLETIN OF MARINE SCIENCE, 34(2): 185-196, 1984 HABITAT SELECTION IN TWO INTERTIDAL SNAILS, GENUS NERITA Richard V Bovbjerg ABSTRACT Adult Nerita versicolor and Nerita tessellata occupy higher and lower but overlapping zones of the rocky intertidal coast of the Florida Keys. Field and laboratory experiments suggest that the zonation is an active habitat selection based on responses to largely physical factors of light, watcr depth and slope. Both species are nocturnal, photonegative and are crevice dwellers. Both species migrate with the tide but N. versicolor retreats higher above the rising tide. Evidence for competitive exclusion is lacking but the zonation, though blurred at night when both species wander, does achieve some measure of resource partitioning. This report attempts to establish causality in the zonation of congeneric snails of a gently sloping, rocky shore in the Florida Keys. The question is more knotty when it is appreciated that the environment is not zoned; it is rather uniform though the rock is furrowed and pitted. Nevertheless, these snails are motile and they select different habitats. The work was done at the University of Miami Field Station at Pigeon Key, past the midway point of the Florida Archipelago (24°42'N and 81009'W). The two species studied were Nerita versicolor, Gmelin, in an inner zone, and Nerita tessel/ata, Gmelin, in an outer zone. Both species were present in large numbers and shared the shore with two other neritids present at much lower densities: Nerila .fulgurans and the striking "bleeding tooth," Nerita peloronta. Pigeon Key is a very small, low island, an exposed patch of recent fossil coral.

Amama ua noa! i Abstract Kūpeʻe (Nerita polita Linnaeus, 1758) is a cryptic, mostly nocturnal intertidal species of gastropod mollusc used widely in Hawaiʻi for sustenance and cultural practices. Despite a long tradition of human interaction with this species, information is generally lacking regarding its reproductive ecology. Results of this study suggest that male and female individuals do not differ significantly in size and that the minimum shell length at maturity for both males and females is 14 mm.
