State of the Environment Rocky Shore Monitoring Report 2015-2017 Technical Report 2017-79 Taranaki Regional Council Private Bag 713 ISSN: 1178-1467 (Online) STRATFORD Document: 1845984 (Word) Document: 1918743 (Pdf) October 2017 Executive summary Section 35 of the Resource Management Act 1991 requires local authorities to undertake monitoring of the region’s environment, including land, air, marine and freshwater. The rocky shore component of the State of the Environment Monitoring (SEM) programme for Taranaki was initiated by the Taranaki Regional Council in the 1994-1995 monitoring year and has subsequently continued each year. This report covers the state and trends of intertidal hard shore communities in Taranaki. As part of the SEM programme, six representative reef sites were monitored twice a year (spring and summer surveys) using a fixed transect, random quadrat survey design. For each survey, a 50 m transect was laid parallel to the shore and substrate cover, algal cover and animal cover/abundance in 25 x 0.25 m2 random quadrats were quantified. Changes in the number of species per quadrat (species richness) and Shannon-Wiener index per quadrat (diversity) were assessed at the six reef sites over the 23 years of the SEM programme (spring 1994 to summer 2017). Of the six sites surveyed, the intertidal communities at Manihi (west Taranaki) were the most species rich (median = 19.4 species per quadrat) and diverse (median Shannon Wiener index = 1.05 per quadrat) due to the low supply of sand and the presence of pools that provided a stable environment with many ecological niches. The intertidal communities at Waihi (south Taranaki) were the least species rich (median = 11.5 species per quadrat) and diverse (median Shannon Wiener index = 0.84 per quadrat) due to the high energy wave environment, lack of stable habitat and periodic sand inundation. -

Present study reports the habitat preference and spatiotemporal variations in the population abundance of limpets Cellana karachiensis and Siphonaria siphonaria inhabiting rocky intertidal zones of Veraval coast, Kathiawar Peninsula, India. The entire intertidal zone of the Veraval coast was divided into five microsampling sites based on their substratum type and assemblage structure. Extensive field surveys were conducted every month in these microsampling sites and the population abundance of two limpet species was analyzed using belt transect method. The results revealed that C. karachiensis was the dominating species at microsampling Site-1 (having rocky substratum) possibly due to its ability to tolerate high desiccation, salinity, and temperature fluctuations, while the S. siphonaria was found to be the most dominating species at microsampling Site-2 (having rocky substratum with abundant algal population) possibly due to their preference for the perpetual wet areas. -

Among these, the Fissurellidae comprise Diodora fragilis n. sp., Diodora pupuyana n. sp., two additional unnamed species of Diodora, and a species resembling Fissurellidea. The Neritidae are represented by Nerita (Heminerita) chilensis [Philippi, 1887]. The new genus Fagnastesia is introduced to represent low-spired trochoideans with a sculpture of nodes below the suture, angulated whorls, and a wide umbilicus. This Miocene Chilean fauna includes genera that have lived at the coast and in shallow, relatively warm water or deeper, much cooler water. This composition therefore suggests that many of the Miocene formations along the central Chilean coast consist of displaced sediments. -

ABSTRACT The family Neritidae has representatives in tropical and subtropical regions that occur in a variety of environments, and its known fossil record dates back to the late Cretaceous. However there have been few studies of molecular phylogeny in this family. We performed a phylogenetic reconstruction of the family Neritidae using the COI (722 bp) and the 16S rRNA (559 bp) regions of the mitochondrial genome. Neighbor-joining, maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference were performed. The best phylogenetic reconstruction was obtained using the COI region, and we consider it an appropriate marker for phylogenetic studies within the group. Consensus analysis (COI +16S rRNA) generally obtained the same tree topologies and confirmed that the genus Nerita is monophyletic. The consensus analysis using parsimony recovered a monophyletic group consisting of the genera Neritina , Septaria , Theodoxus , Puperita , and Clithon , while in the Bayesian analyses Theodoxus is separated from the other genera. -

About 22 species of molluscs (16 gastropods and 6 bivalves) were recorded. Among them two species were marine, eighteen brackish water and two fresh water. Key words : Molluscs, Tekkali Creek, Srikakulam _____________________________________________________________________________________________ INTRODUCTION Molluscs occupy second position among invertebrates and the number of species varies between 80,000 to 100,000. Gastropods and Bivalves constitute 98% of the total population inhabiting land and aquatic environments (fresh water, brackish water and marine) and the remaining are marine. Mangrove roots, trunks and branches attract rich epifaunal communities, including sponges, hydroids, anemones, polychaetes, bryozoans and ascidians, apart from the molluscs and crustaceans [1, 2]. These molluscs can be broadly grouped into three categories- epifauna (living on mud or surface area of the land), infauna (living in the mud), and arboreal (living on the vegetation) and some molluscs have habitat-overlap [3, 4, 5]. Molluscs are used as food, ornaments, poultry and fish feed, for lime etc and also in the pharmacological industry [6]. Thus molluscs have been highly valued aquatic resources since prehistoric times, for commercial, ornamental and medicinal purposes. Several contributions have been made on mangrove molluscs in India [7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 ], in Lakshadweep [15] and in Andhra Pradesh [16, 17]. -

One application that is not fully explored yet is their use for assessing the species biodiversity and presence of invasive alien species (IAS) in maritime biosecurity. The phylogeographical signals of the mitochondrial COI (mtCOI) gene have been sometimes used to infer the number of introductions and the origin of biological invasions. Here, we employed mtCOI barcodes of mollusks and acorn barnacles (N = 751) from ports of French Polynesia to infer the effect of port size, maritime traffic, and degree of openness in the risk of biological invasions. With 17.2% of non-indigenous species (NIS) recorded here, significant differences in diversity were found among docks Edited by: David S.
