Barking dogs prevent suicide bombing inside Nigeria hospital

The persistent barking of guard dogs outside a hospital in northeastern Nigeria prevented two suicide bombers from detonating their explosive belts inside the building, police said. The man and woman entered the grounds of the Molai General Hospital in Maiduguri, the capital of volatile Borno State, in the early hours of Friday, Borno State police spokesman Victor Isuzu told DPA. When the barking dogs drew attention to the pair, they detonated their bombs early, before entering the medical centre, Isuzu said. The two bombers were the only fatalities, he said. According to witness accounts, a handful of people were injured in the attack. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the blast. British Columbia extends emergency

The Canadian province of British Columbia has extended a state of Brazil troops raid emergency by two weeks for a second time as it battled 123 fires that have forced as many as 45,000 people to flee their homes. Since April 1, 872 fires across the province have charred an estimated 509,000 hectares (1.3mn acres) and destroyed 305 Rio slums to catch structures, off icials said, including homes, sheds, barns, and commercial buildings. Some 115 burnt structures have not been identified. British Columbia chief fire information off icer Kevin Skrepnek said crime gang bosses on a conference call that hot, dry weather conditions were forecast into the weekend, with a chance of lightning. Thunder showers and lightning are expected from Monday to AFP could be seen ringing Lins favela, Wednesday, he said. “Given how dry it’s been, if it doesn’t come with Rio de Janeiro one of the many little-regulated, a significant amount of rain, we’re likely going to see a number of and often gang-plagued commu- new fires.” nities of working class Brazilians The fires have cost the province C$211.7mn ($167.37mn) so far this housands of Brazilian that rise on the city’s forest-clad fire season, Skrepnek said. army troops raided Rio hills.
