Feeling under appreciated by his master, he soon seeks Sun Quan's service. During his time in Wu, Ling Tong tries to avenge his father and attacks Gan Ning while they work together. Wu gains momentum and conquers the land with Gan Ning's support. In his ending, he is happy for some excitement as bandits raid his Where is Gah-Ning? boat. Although his night raid is still a pivotal part of Wu's plan, he works together with his comrades Where is Gah-Ning? succeed. With them distracted, Gan Ning circles around the west through Wu's boats and attacks the main camp guarded by Cao Ren. If he takes the enemy camp quickly, Wei is thrown off balance and not even Zhang Where is Gah-Ning? heroics can stop Wu's victory march. Gan Ning's ending scene in Dynasty Warriors: Online shows him walking to the marketplace with the player by their side. The town's peaceful atmosphere agitates the former pirate enough to engage his companion in a friendly duel. Gan Ning's former employment is given a passing mention in Dynasty Warriors 6and he is first seen joining the Allied Forces at Chi Bi. Cocky of his strength, Gan Ning insists on doing things his own way rather than listening to his superior's orders. Though Ling Tong is disgruntled with his brutish tactics, Zhou Yu and Lu Meng forgive his behavior since it lets him demonstrate his prowess to his new allies. As time progresses, Lu Meng grows weary with Gan Ning's apathetic attitude towards his comrades and chides him to work with them. The older gent, while he Where is Gah-Ning? criticize Gan Ning's methods, supports the former pirate and helps him gain a favorable image to Sun Quan. Mourning Lu Meng's death at Fan CastleGan Ning decides to take his responsibilities more seriously in honor of his departed friend. Saying adieu to Wu and Where is Gah-Ning? band of sailors, Gan Ning forsakes profit to explore the peaceful land for adventure. His followers track him down and, touched by their similar desires, he decides to bring them with him. As time passes, his rivalry with Ling Tong heats up and Lu Meng usually has to step in to cool them down. Unlike previous titles, Where is Gah-Ning? Ning lives past the battle of Yiling and is seen in Wu's ending, enjoying the temporary peace with Sun Quan and the other Wu officers. Dynasty Warriors Next introduces Gan Ning in the sixth chapter where he begrudgingly fights for his master at Xiakou. After suffering defeat by Sun Quan twice, the pirate awaits his execution only to be spared by the Wu leader who recognizes his capabilities. He later appears in Chibi to defend their main camp while the fire attack is being prepared. His actions in Wu's last stand varies with Where is Gah-Ning? faction. Wei's version has him charge recklessly at the player should Lu Where is Gah-Ning? be defeated whereas Jin 's rendition of that battle Where is Gah-Ning? the duo launch a surprise attack on Sima Yi 's main camp. In Shu's version, he leads the vanguard against the opposing army while displaying his camaraderie with Ling Tong. In Dynasty Warriors 8Gan Ning reprises his role from the previous installment. At Yiling, he ventures on his own without any orders from Lu Xun. However, he is ambushed by Shamoke and slain in battle. If the players accompanies and fights with him, Gan Ning will live past Yiling and fight the Wei Where is Gah-Ning? at Guangling. In Wei's story, he will leap onto Cao Cao's boat during the battle at Chibi, and must be defeated to ensure the vessel's complete travel. In the hypothetical route, he will join Ling Tong in an ambush party against the Wei forces attempting to advance north in Jianye. He and many other of Sun Quan's officers join their lord in an alternate version of Hefei Castle in Jin's story. He and Ling Tong will also ambush the Wei officers at Shangyong with a fire attack as they pass through the central area to reach the castle. His bond story has him leave Huang Zu out of frustration for not being given a promotion even after killing Ling Where is Gah-Ning?. It's thanks to Su Fei that he is able to spread his wings and later find fulfillment as an officer of Wu. Sun Quan's comparison of him to Zhang Liao is reprised during a banquet to celebrate their recent victory over Cao Cao at Ruxukou. Teaming up with Zhang Liao, both warriors ambush the marching Orochi army. Despite their efforts, they are defeated and Gan Ning evades capture. He later enlists in a rebellion led Nagamasa and Oichi. When Nagamasa's army is beaten, he joins forces with Cao Pi. Seeing an opening through Lu Bu's charge, the former pirate momentarily retreats from the battle to seek reinforcements.

Last time, Sun Quan and the troops of the Southlands had just defeated and killed Huang (2) Zu (3), a close friend and top commander of Liu Biao, the imperial protector of Jing (1) Province. Sun Quan had also captured the key city of Jiangxia (1,4), which Huang Zu was defending. Upon receiving Huang Zu’s head, Sun Quan ordered that it be placed in a wooden box and taken back to the Southlands to be placed as an offering at the altar of his father, who had been killed in battle against Liu Biao years earlier. He then rewarded his troops handsomely, promoted Gan Ning, the man who defected from Huang Zu and then killed him in battle, to district commander, and began discussion of whether to leave troops to garrison the newly conquered city. His adviser Zhang Zhao (1), however, said, “A lone city so far from our territory is impossible to hold. We should return to the Southlands. When Liu Biao finds out we have killed Huang Zu, he will surely come looking for revenge. We should rest our troops while he overextends his. This will guarantee victory. We can then attack him as he falls back and take Jing Province.” Sun Quan took this advice and abandoned his new conquest and returned home. But there was still the matter of Su (1) Fei (1), the enemy general he had captured. This Su Fei was friends with Gan Ning and was actually the one who helped him defect to Sun Quan.

Last time on the podcast, Sun Jian had set off on an expedition to seek revenge against Liu Biao for an earlier unprovoked attack when Sun Jian was returning home with the imperial hereditary seal. The campaign could not have gotten off to a better start. Sun Jian easily foiled the defenses set up by Liu Biao’s commander Huang (2) Zu (3), and then soundly defeated Huang (2) Zu (3) in a pitch battle. With the opposition on the run, Sun Jian began to advance on Xiangyang Prefecture (1,2), which was Liu Biao’s home base.

Chen certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: REPRESENTING TALENTED WOMEN IN EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY CHINESE PAINTING: THIRTEEN FEMALE DISCIPLES SEEKING INSTRUCTION AT THE LAKE PAVILION ________________________________ Chairperson Marsha Haufler Date approved: May 13, 2016 ii Abstract As the first comprehensive art-historical study of the Qing poet Yuan Mei (1716–97) and the female intellectuals in his circle, this dissertation examines the depictions of these women in an eighteenth-century handscroll, Thirteen Female Disciples Seeking Instructions at the Lake Pavilion, related paintings, and the accompanying inscriptions. Created when an increasing number of women turned to the scholarly arts, in particular painting and poetry, these paintings documented the more receptive attitude of literati toward talented women and their support in the social and artistic lives of female intellectuals. These pictures show the women cultivating themselves through literati activities and poetic meditation in nature or gardens, common tropes in portraits of male scholars. The predominantly male patrons, painters, and colophon authors all took part in the formation of the women’s public identities as poets and artists; the first two determined the visual representations, and the third, through writings, confirmed and elaborated on the designated identities.

    XIKANG: HAN CHINESE IN SICHUAN’S WESTERN FRONTIER, 1905-1949. by Joe Lawson A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Chinese Victoria University of Wellington 2011 Abstract This thesis is about Han Chinese engagement with the ethnically diverse highlands west and south-west of the Sichuan basin in the first half of the twentieth century. This territory, which includes much of the Tibetan Kham region as well as the mostly Yi- and Han-settled Liangshan, constituted Xikang province between 1939 and 1955. The thesis begins with an analysis of the settlement policy of the late Qing governor Zhao Erfeng, as well as the key sources of influence on it. Han authority suffered setbacks in the late 1910s, but recovered from the mid-1920s under the leadership of General Liu Wenhui, and the thesis highlights areas of similarity and difference between the Zhao and Liu periods. Although contemporaries and later historians have often dismissed the attempts to build Han Chinese- dominated local governments in the highlands as failures, this endeavour was relatively successful in a limited number of places. Such success, however, did not entail the incorporation of territory into an undifferentiated Chinese whole. Throughout the highlands, pre-twentieth century local institutions, such as the wula corvée labour tax in Kham, continued to exercise a powerful influence on the development and nature of local and regional government. The thesis also considers the long-term life (and death) of ideas regarding social transformation as developed by leaders and historians of the highlands.

Schwartz^ Editors QC 100 ,U57 NO. 893 1995 Jhe National Institute of Standards and Technology was established in 1988 by Congress to "assist industry in the development of technology . needed to improve product quality, to modernize manufacturing processes, to ensure product reliability . and to facilitate rapid commercialization ... of products based on new scientific discoveries." NIST, originally founded as the National Bureau of Standards in 1901, works to strengthen U.S. industry's competitiveness; advance science and engineering; and improve public health, safety, and the environment. One of the agency's basic functions is to develop, maintain, and retain custody of the national standards of measurement, and provide the means and methods for comparing standards used in science, engineering, manufacturing, commerce, industry, and education with the standards adopted or recognized by the Federal Government. As an agency of the U.S. Commerce Department's Technology Administration, NIST conducts basic and applied research in the physical sciences and engineering, and develops measurement techniques, test methods, standards, and related services. The Institute does generic and precompetitive work on new and advanced technologies. NIST's research facilities are located at Gaithersburg, MD 20899, and at Boulder, CO 80303.
