The season is well underway and there have been a number of events the club membership as a whole may find interesting. Our eight teams are playing some great football, with some of our boys really acquitting themselves well at all levels of youth footy.

The first event for the open rules teams was the annual friendly game against the Goldfields Football Academy. This game is played by our 13s as a pre-season fixture when the boys from the Goldfields Academy come to on their annual trip. We clubbed together a combined side among the available 13s players. The team was coached by Tony Lenzarini, an experienced coach who has worked with the Subiaco 16s Development program. The game was played in good spirit followed by a sausage sizzle. Thanks to Peter Quinlan for organising the snags and for representing the club. The result was a convincing win to SDJFC so we hold the trophy for another year.

Many of the games in the regular season have been hotly contested. I have very been impressed with the efforts of our coaches and the endeavour shown by many of our players at training and in games. In football we all understand that things can become very heated and passionate. That, to some extent, is the nature of the game. Unfortunately there have been some incidents that have marred the enjoyment of our parents and players. Can I please urge all members to remember the codes of conduct for coaches, managers, parents and players even when the opposition teams may seem to be ignoring them. At all times we must support our young umpires and remember the by-laws about talking to umpires, entering the playing arena and conducting ourselves as water carriers, runners etc.

On a more positive note it is very pleasing to report that our club has been very well represented in the 15s Development program. The program has been running since March with an initial intake of players. A second intake is being finalized currently and more details will follow in the next newsletter. We have large numbers in our 15s teams and this has been reflected in large number accessing the development system.

Congratulations are due for the 15s tour committee for putting together what should be a memorable trip for the boys and parents travelling to Melbourne. This has been a first for our club and the team have done a fantastic job breaking new ground. This trip should be a feature of the clubs calendar for years to come!

Let’s have a terrific season and enjoy watching our kids play the Great Game! Here’s hoping everyone is enjoying the new clubrooms at Seacrest.

From the latest Coaches and Managers Meeting

Coaches and Managers were duly updated on the following items:

 RED CARD Procedures, YELLOW CARD Procedures, and Incident Procedures  How old does an Orange Shirt Umpire Have to Be? – No age restriction, it is based on experience/performance. Normally will be over 14-15 however.  E Point Allocation – The club was informed after the 1st week that all SDJFC sides received the maximum points – Well Done.

If you require any more information on the above, please see your Team Manager.

Registrars Report We are now almost half way through the season and it appears all is tracking nicely. Numbers are up from last year, 386 Auskick members, 229 Modified members and 210 Open members for a total of 825.

To all our managers in Modifieds and Opens, we have been advised by the Subiaco District that our team sheets forwarded on a Sunday are of an excellent standard. Thank you to you all, but please keep up the tremendous work for the remainder of the season.

Seacrest on a Saturday morning is something special, 386 Auskickers running around with parents watching, sausages sizzling and coffee brewing it just doesn’t get any better. As was mentioned in our first newsletter, please keep in mind registrations for next year and forward them in as early as possible. It is also requested that all members register on line. Finally from scores received and loaded it appears all our Open sides are in the hunt for finals action at this stage, so good luck to them (and all our other sides) for the remainder of the season

The season has started very well for the 12 teams in the Modified Section of the competition. We have 4 x YR4 Teams, 2 x YR5 Teams, 2 x YR6 Teams, and 4 x 12’s Teams. All of these teams are full, so the future of the club looks very bright.

All teams have been very competitive, and we are certainly leading the way as a club, in terms of player, official, and spectator behaviour.

We have had NIL issues at our level so I encourage all teams to keep up the good work.

The 12 Sharks had a great time on Saturday May 21st when they played the Little League game at Medibank Stadium, during the half time break of the Subiaco Vs Peel game.

As we have a large number of teams in the Modified competition, we have the great opportunity to play in Derbies. I have watched a few of these and been involved as a coach in one myself. These games have been played in brilliant spirit, and I encourage all teams to embrace these games and simply enjoy playing against your club mates.

I also pass on a special thanks to the managers and coaches, as we have recently been busy with meetings, photos, raffles, injury prevention sessions, and they have all happened very smoothly.

Keep Having Fun

What a great start to the season !!!! Big thanks to all of the coaches, parents, team managers, social coordinators, umpires and our junior committee. Everyone keeps telling me how well run this Auskick is, that is because all of the volunteers run it each week, keep up the great work, without you we don’t have the Auskick !!! Some of the highlights to date:

 Great numbers, we are up to about 390 players and 26 teams !!

 The Team photo day, despite it being a messy day (we can’t avoid that) you will absolutely treasure the photos in years to come, and so will your child. You can never replace these photos or take them again so enjoy them for years to come (you will get these handed out at the presentation day at the end of the season, late August). Thanks for your patience on the day.

 The Friday night games last week were a winner, we had a beautiful kind night with the weather, them kids kept asking why wthey can’t play all their footy under lights. Give them a cold wet night and they may change their mind !! A few photos to enjoy from the night. The Pre Primary had their night, the Year 2’s and 3’sd get their Friday night match on the week after the long weekend.

 Grid games at Medibank Stadium for the Subiaco Football Club, again this was a big hit for those who attended (some photos attached). This was targeted at the Year 2’s and some Year 3’s. We had 10 teams representing Sorrento Duncraig JFC on the day and were given a big wrap from the Subiaco District Manager Ben Haywood as per quote,

“Please pass on my sincere thanks to Colin for his Auskickers on Saturday. I have had nothing but praise from the football club with the way they conducted themselves and I hope that had a great time. The way which Colin had it sorted on the day was sensational and probably the best I’ve seen in my time in the role”.

Again this is a reflection of the commitment from all the volunteers at the SDJFC club, well done for organising the teams and getting the kids and parents along. This provides the opportunity for the kids to see what the next big step in football is in the future if they have the ambition to one day become an AFL player. Plus Subiaco are great supporters of our club. Pity that Peel knocked off Subiaco on the day, but you can’t organise everything !!!

Hey how would you like this. Free tickets to the AFL Grand Final, accommodation and flights, present the medallions to the runners up of the AFL Grand Final, free flights and accommodation over for another game during the year to promote you being the Auskicker Grand Final Winner (one of 22 across the nation). That’s what young Luke McIntosh won this year. He will be representing the Sorrento Duncraig JFC at the AFL grand final, and by the way his poor Dad has to accompany him to these two events including great tickets to the Grand Final. It so happens that Greg McIntosh is a coach of one of our teams (The Bulldogs) in Year 2, so it couldn’t have been more deserving, well done Luke and Greg. (Photo attached).

How Happy Are They!

Luke McIntosh and his Dad Greg are off on an all expenses paid trip to the 2011 AFL Grand Final. Luke is the 3rd SDJFC Player to win this magnificant prize, just for being a member at SDJFC!

 Parking issue at Seacrest, please be vigilant to pass onto anyone coming along to the Auskick each weekend. Do not park over the footpaths, the council are extremely vigilant on fining those who do this. Check the street signs, and don’t park over the footpath, that way Auskick won’t cost you extra money to watch !!!!

 3 big thanks for helpers on the Auskick Sub committee

o Chris Howarth – is dong all of the communications between the Auskick coordinator and all the Coaches and Mgrs (doing a wonderful job and helping to keep you all informed about what’s happening on a weekly basis)

o Scott Preston – marks all of the grounds (13 of them) on a weekly basis, a huge help

o Cory Lake – Coach Mentor (will be running some coach and umpire info sessions this year to help keep the quality control of the weekly matches up to what they should be) The first session the week back after the long weekend break.

 I still need the following to help out.

o Someone to do the siren each week (preferably a parent whose child’s team plays on one of the ovals near the pavilion each week).

o A morning and end of match coordinator (this role is just to oversee and direct the teams setting up and packing up each week). One person to do the morning set up role and one to do the pack up role would be great. Easy roles, about 20 mins each Sat morning is all it takes, and its overseeing not doing.

Percy Doyle and Seacrest Wow - what a busy couple of months it has been! As you would have noticed, Seacrest Park clubrooms are now up and running. The canteen has recently been fitted out with new shelving in the storeroom, along with new fridge and freezer facilities. These new facilities are helping Laurel, Rosemary and Page serve you on those busy days we have been experiencing. We havel relocate the portable scoreboard from Percy Doyle - so you will be able to keep track of the scores on game day. The club has representation on the Seacrest Park Working Committee which amongst other things will determine some of the inside fit out still to be undertaken. SDJFC will retain Percy Doyle as a primary location for social events. Along with this, we still have several teams training and playing at Percy Doyle. Similarly the monthly committee meetings are held at Percy Doyle.

Memorabilia • SDJFC helps out - Queensland Floods. As advised in the first newsletter of the Year, SDJFC donated to the Pine Rivers Swans Junior AFL Club in Lawnton, Queensland. SDJFC has now received a Pine Rivers Swans jumper as a token of appreciation and is the process of having this framed for display at Percy Doyle Clubrooms. • Daniel Rich - Brisbane Lions FC. Former SDJFC player, Daniel Rich, has recently provided a signed Brisbane Lions jumper to SDJFC. Once again, this jumper will be framed for display at the Percy Doyle Clubrooms.

Photos Thank you to all parents, players and committee members for your support over the 2 days photos were taken. The Auskick Group photo this year will be spectacular with over 380 children in the photo. Please note for those players absent on the day, inserts are available at a cost of $15 per insert. A passport size digital photo is required, best taken in the club jumper, up against a plain wall (Seacrest Clubrooms are great) Your Team Manager will have further details when they are checking the proofs this weekedn. All players will receive a colour photo at the end of year; cost of this is covered by registration costs.

They’re off.. This year the 15s are traveling to Melbourne in July. This is the inaugural trip for SDJFC and the intention is for it be an annual event of the 15s players. Significant fundraising by both parent and players has been undertaken since last August for this to occur. The trip includes AFL matches at the MCG and Etihad Stadium, as well as some tours and well deserved free time. From July this year, the current 14's Teams will start their fundraising - more news to the 14's Team at next week’s meeting, Tuesday 14th June at Percy Doyle.

Seacrest Park Community Sporting Facility Officially Opened

Sorrento residents and representatives of local sporting clubs were impressed with what they saw at the May 14 official opening of the City of Joondalup’s newest community building – the Seacrest Park Community Sporting Facility.

Joondalup Mayor Troy Pickard officiated at the ceremony and thanked everyone involved in the project, which had resulted in a much-needed modern facility at Seacrest Park, Sorrento. “In mid 2009, the Council undertook significant community consultation with local residents and sporting groups to ensure the proposed clubrooms met the needs, desires and requirements of all local stakeholders and the final proposal was widely accepted by the local community,” he said.

“The City is pleased to have been able to provide modern new facilities for our community, especially at this location where for many years, local sporting clubs and groups have had limited access to facilities. “The finished clubrooms are a win for both the local community and the local sporting groups that use Seacrest Park.”

The new clubrooms include a large function room, kitchen, toilets, change rooms and various storerooms. The project also included a new cricket wicket and practice nets, public artwork and the relocation of the playground closer to the new facility. The sculptural artwork, which is located near the clubroom veranda, has been created by Kate McMillan, a well-respected Australian artist who grew up in the Sorrento area. In addition to the aesthetic qualities of her artwork, the statuesque work called Kambarang is designed to act as a functional object that indicates wind direction for the sporting groups who use this new facility.

A series of phrases will be incorporated on each windsock that links the concepts of culture, community and sportsmanship. Mayor Pickard acknowledged the Federal Government for providing significant funding to the tune of almost $1 million to assist with the construction of the new clubrooms as part of the Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program.

Can anybody tell us exactly what the inscriptions on the wind socks mean?

Seacrest Artwork The official word: - The sculptural artwork, which is located near the clubroom veranda, has been created by Kate McMillan, a well-respected Australian artist who grew up in the Sorrento area. In addition to the aesthetic qualities of her artwork, the statuesque work called Kambarang is designed to act as a functional object that indicates wind direction for the sporting groups who use this new facility. The series of phrases incorporated on each windsock links the concepts of culture, community and sportsmanship.

And From Kate’s Web Site:

This project will be installed at Seacrest Sporting Facility in Sorrento, Western Australia in May 2011. Three windsocks set high atop custom designed flagpoles sit in front of the viewing area across two sporting grounds. Hand written text is being researched and developed for each sock which will draw on the Indigenous history of the area including the Yellagonga Lake system, the potential for sport to act as a conduit for cross-cultural engagement. The poles stand in as goal posts and markers. The work also provides a practical purpose of wind direction.

The use of windsocks in my work dates back to a residency I took part in during 2002/3 in the West Australian wheat belt town of Kellerberrin. It continues to inform and represent many ideas for me. The subtleties of the changing wind are a constant reminder of the present. But they also talk of something timeless and bigger than our own human experience. Overlaying the socks with text provides an opportunity to pull various connections together.

Preventing spectator incidents at Junior Football The overriding objective of the AFL’s Next Generation Australian Football Match Policy for the conduct of the game for players aged 5-18 years is to provide an environment where young players can play the game and inexperienced umpires can sequentially develop their skills through activities, games, match rules and conditions commensurate with their stage of learning and ability. This junior policy aims to provide clear direction for the provision of appropriate pathways for boys and girls in a safe, enjoyable and accountable environment. Recently, there has been some publicity of incidents at junior football matches involving supporters and fans.

As coaches it is important to understand the role you play in guiding the members within your team to act appropriately. provided the following article in The Age in response to the problems of parent behaviour at junior football. How can you make a difference and ensure that your club environment deals appropriately with this area?

By Garry Lyon If alcohol is seen as one of the major sources of street violence in our city, then an unhealthy focus on winning is a similar problem at junior-level football. Just as enjoying a beer or a glass of wine is fine, so too is hoping, and barracking, for your kids' team to win each time they play. But when that beer - or quest for victory - becomes the single-most important thing and it starts to impact negatively on your behaviour, you need to reassess your attitude to it.

The growing and abhorrent trend of violence at junior football matches needs to be acknowledged addressed and urgently eradicated. The mindless, ignorant and anti-social behaviour of a minority group of people - chiefly associated with the 11-15-year-old players - has overridden the philosophy that should underpin all junior sport, not just football. Coaching kids isn't easy. You are confronted with players whose skill levels vary greatly, but therein lies the great challenge for us all who have taken on the role. We need to re-define winning for everyone concerned, kids and adults alike, and reinforce, from the very first training session, that it doesn't always equate to what is happening on the scoreboard.

And this is, in my opinion, where the heart of the problem lies. Not all coaches, and parents, are able to equate victory with anything other than who is in front at the end of the game, and as a result their behaviour is inextricably linked to that. Their frustrations are then directed to umpires, players, opposition supporters and coaches, and in the most extreme cases, that frustration and inability to control emotion leads to violence. I have coached junior football for the past three years and some of our greatest victories have had nothing to do with the scoreboard.

One of my proudest moments in that time involved one of my players whose knowledge of the game and physical ability was very low. He started the year not knowing where to stand on the ground and, through his inexperience, was unable to get near the ball. In the last game of the year, with the support of team mates and coaches, he was standing in the goal square and managed to take a mark. The place erupted, his mates went crazy and all the parents cheered as if it were their own son. Without going overboard, it was as emotional a feeling as I have had in footy.

If we all take the emphasis off the end result, to even a small degree, there will be an immediate improvement in coach, player and crowd behaviour.

I would like to see junior football clubs officially graded on their clubs' policies, their behavioural history and their willingness to deal, positively but unerringly, with those that don't comply. Where practical, those A-graded clubs need to be rewarded for their efforts by way of resources or AFL player visits.

The future prosperity and strength of the AFL is inextricably linked to junior football. Without it, our game would wither and die. This is by no means a lost cause, and we can, and will, reverse recent trends. I watched games of junior football last weekend at Bulleen and Frankston, and went out to listen to the coaches at the quarter-time huddles.

The messages given were positive and instructional, the win was important, as you would expect in finals, but not overriding, and the crowds were impeccably behaved. That is the standard we should aspire to. We will not tolerate thuggish behaviour, nor do we want to see grand finals called off in the middle of the game due to fears for the safety of its players.

12 Lions "Paul Merson, the Coach of the 12 Lions, organised for Eagle, Ryan Neates, and his father, a respected running Guru, to conduct a recent training session.

The team was shown the finer points of running, and the first half of the session was spent on specific techniques that will see the team running faster, and for longer. Ryan told the kids, that in today's football, kicking is the most important skill, but if you cannot run at a required level, then you are going to struggle.

After the running session, the boys were put through some ball drills that the Eagles use. A specific focus was keeping the arms clear whilst being tackled, dishing out a handball, and then running at pace away from the congestion."

Another point that Ryan stressed was that basic kicking skills should also be implemented when the boys are fatigued, to simulate a match day environment. A good drill for this is for basic kick to kick between two boys, after 5 marks, both boys sprint to a point 30 metres away, sprint back, and proceed to do the kick to kick exercise again.

The boys greatly appreciated the session and were very thankful."
