by Ross Lewis Black Swans want to ruffle some feathers

Mention WA-Victoria football clashes and the great memories cascade in the mind. The first State of Origin clash in 1977 can never be forgotten. And what about those three heartstoppers at during the 1980s. One that doesn’t sit as well in the recesses of WA fans’ mental replay of the 2007 battle between the arch-rivals in . It became known as the Teac Wreak among Black Swans officials, in recognition of the VFL oval and the damage done to the State’s premier competition’s reputation. WA was out-pushed, out-run and out-prepared by a brutal line-up in Victoria’s 25.11 (161) to 5.12 (42) triumph at Port Melbourne. So State coach Marc Webb is aware of the pressure of coming up against the Big V. He was part of the WA team that day.

Paul Johnson.

“A fair bit of footy has been played since then but I suppose I got one bit of advice from that match,” Webb said. “I think you can get caught trying to pick the best 22 for a State match, instead of the best team. “We’ll be looking at putting together the best combination not necessarily having a team stacked with onballers for example. “I also believe the WAFL is a better competition now and you can gauge that by the amount of mature-age players being drafted from here.” Injuries and omissions have made Webb’s task a bit easier. He and his selection team have filled the gaps with players capable of fitting into the game plan not on who is leading the media awards voting. The Black Swans’ strategy is hardly a secret. They want to run the Victorians off their feet in Northam. Most interstaters marvel at the sizes of the grounds used in WAFL ranks. It is little different at Henry St Oval. The tactic almost worked in the clash between WA and the Big V in 2004 – the first following the signing of a new interstate competition charter by the major local leagues. Although the big bodies of Victoria dominated the first three quarters, the fleet-footed West Aussies fell just 11 points short in their challenge at Medibank Stadium. The WA team is short of long-term interstate experience and will rely on big man Paul Johnson to carry a heavy load as the Black Swans’ sole recognised ruckman. Ian Richardson The hosts also have goal-kicking options to cover the late withdrawal of Josh Smith to injury before the match. Ian Richardson is one of the few old-hands at interstate football and will partner Tim Geappen, Marlon Motlop, Ashton Hamp and even Johnson in providing WA with scoring options. WA will know a fair about two of the VFL players. (Subiaco) and (West Perth) started their senior football careers on the west coast before the search for the AFL dream took them east.
