Applies to: SMART Board software 9.5 for the 3.1 (Sarge)

Issue The SMART Board software installation cannot continue after searching for Linux kernel version 2.6 on your computer. You may also see an error message that states “Unable to prepare package SMART Board software.”

Cause By default, Debian Linux 3.1 (Sarge) doesn’t contain kernel version 2.6.

Solution Manually upgrade the Linux kernel to version 2.6 or later using one of the following methods..

CAUTION Improperly updating your operating system’s kernel can render your computer unusable and cause a complete loss of data. Back up any important information before you begin this procedure.

To update the Linux kernel to version 2.6 using Synaptic 1. Open Synaptic Package Manager. – If you’re using the K-Desktop Environment (KDE), click KMenu > System > Package Manager (Synaptic Package Manager). – If you’re using the GNOME desktop, click GNOME Menu > System Tools > Synaptic Package Manager. – If you’re using a command-line interface, type /usr/sbin/su-to-root -X - /usr/sbin/synaptic. NOTE: Your window manager may require that you enter your root password to open Synaptic Package Manager. 2. Click Search in the Synaptic toolbar. 3. In the Search box, type kernel-image. The window refreshes with the search results. 4. Select the update that applies to your computer. 5. Right-click the appropriate kernel-image-2.6 and select Mark for installation 6. Click Apply.

To update the Linux kernel to version 2.6 using a command-line interface 1. As the root user, type the following command to view a list of available kernel updates: -get install kernel-image

2. Make note of the kernel version 2.6 that applies to your computer’s processor type. 3. Type the following command to install the kernel update: apt-get install [kernel update that applies to your computer]

NOTE: The update software adds the kernel version 2.6 to your boot loader (either LILO or GRUB). When you restart your computer, select the kernel version 2.6 from the list.
