Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve Moth Survey 2009 Fauna Conservation Department Kadoorie Farm & Botanic Garden 29 June 2010 Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden Publication Series: No 6 Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve moth survey 2009 Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve Moth Survey 2009 Executive Summary The objective of this survey was to generate a moth species list for the Butterfly Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest [SSSI] at Fung Yuen, Tai Po, Hong Kong. The survey came about following a request from Tai Po Environmental Association. Recording, using ultraviolet light sources and live traps in four sub-sites, took place on the evenings of 24 April and 16 October 2009. In total, 825 moths representing 352 species were recorded. Of the species recorded, 3 meet IUCN Red List criteria for threatened species in one of the three main categories “Critically Endangered” (one species), “Endangered” (one species) and “Vulnerable” (one species” and a further 13 species meet “Near Threatened” criteria. Twelve of the species recorded are currently only known from Hong Kong, all are within one of the four IUCN threatened or near threatened categories listed. Seven species are recorded from Hong Kong for the first time. The moth assemblages recorded are typical of human disturbed forest, feng shui woods and orchards, with a relatively low Geometridae component, and includes a small number of species normally associated with agriculture and open habitats that were found in the SSSI site. Comparisons showed that each sub-site had a substantially different assemblage of species, thus the site as a whole should retain the mosaic of micro-habitats in order to maintain the high moth species richness observed. -

The remains of a new species of cossonine weevil (Cossoninae: Dryotribini) are described and figured from Early Miocene (Burdigalian) amber from the Dominican Republic. Caulophilus ashei sp. n. is distinguished from other species in the genus. KEY WORDS: Polyphaga, Phytophaga, Tertiary, Curculionoidea, palaeontology, taxonomy. INTRODUCTION Weevils of the cossonine genus Caulophilus WOLLASTON are familiar members of the tribe Dryotribini. The common European species, Caulophilus oryzae (GYLLENHAL ) is widely known as the broadnose grain weevil and a frequent pest in agricultural systems. Adult females lay small, white eggs in soft or damaged grains (frequently damaged by the activity of other grain insects) which then hatch within a few days. The larvae feed on the softer portions of the grain before pupating and finally eclosing to an adult. Herein we provide the description of the first fossil Caulophilus , the first fossil of the tribe Dryotribini, and the first cossonine in Dominican amber. Today the genus Caulophilus consists of 17 described species distributed in South and North America, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Cuba, Hawaii, Seychelles, Madeira, and Europe, although some have become recently adventive in other regions (e.g., New Zealand). With the discovery of the species described herein the genus can now be documented from paleofauna of Hispaniola and is at least 19 million years old. -

The Influence of the Type of Storage on Pest Infestation of Stored Grain in the Czech Republic

Therefore, the aim of this work was to explore whether the risk of infestation of stored grain by pests is different in various types of storage premises. We compared the level of infestation and the pest species compo- sition in the two main types of grain stores in Central Europe that includes horizontal flat-stores (HFS) and vertical silo- stores (elevators) (VSS). A total of 147 grain stores located in Bohemia, Czech Republic was inspected. We found that both types of stores were infested with arthropods of three main taxonomic groups: mites (25 species, 120 000 individu- als), psocids (8 species, 5 600 individuals) and beetles (23 species, 4 500 individuals). We found that VSS and HFS differ in species composition of mites, psocids and beetles. However, the primary grain pests (i.e. Lepidoglyphus destructor, Acarus siro, Tyrophagus putrescentiae, Lachesilla pedicularia, Sitophilus oryzae, Rhyzopertha dominica, Oryzaephilus surinamensis and Cryptolestes ferrugineus) occurred in both types of stores. The only exception was higher frequency and abundance of two serious beetle-pests (Tribolium castaneum, Sitophilus granarius) in HFS than in VSS. -

Seven species, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst), Tribolium confusum Jaquelin du Val., Rhyzopertha dominica (F.), Sitophilus oryzae (L.), Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.), Cryptolestes ferrugineus (Stephens), and Latheticus oryzae (Waterhouse) belonging to 5 families of Coleoptera were found. The infestation rate of insect species varied with the climatic zones of Turkey. S. oryzae indicated the highest infestation rate (80%) in the central region, followed by T. castaneum (40%) and C. ferrugineus (20%). T. castaneum and C. ferrugineus had the highest infestation rate (28.5%) in the south-eastern region while both T. castaneum and S. oryzae (40%) had the highest infestation rate in the southern region. In southern region, the total number of insects per 1 kg corn grain was 33.8 during sampling dates while it was 2.8 and 11.7 insects per 1 kg corn in central and south-eastern region respectively. -

This will take place through an Implementation Pilot Programme on Surveillance, which will be a coordinated effort with active participation from contracting parties and RPPOs. The Regional IPPC Workshops are an opportunity to share experiences with surveillance activities such as: current status, upcoming plans, and successes and challenges of surveillance activities within your country. In 2015, Member Countries answered a questionnaire on surveillance circulated by the IPPC Secretariat, and presented a summary on surveillance activities undertaken during the regional workshop. The data provided by Member Countries were extremely rich and useful to define activities to be set in the framework of the Implementation Pilot Programme on Surveillance. The content of the questionnaire for the regions in which an IPPC regional workshop was organized are provided below: Near East and North Africa, Pacific, Central Asia and Eastern Europe, Caribbean and Latin America (in Spanish). Diana Gallagher Master’s Project for the M.S. in Entomology An Annotated Bibliography of Archaeoentomology April 2020 Introduction For my Master’s Degree Project, I have undertaken to compile an annotated bibliography of a selection of the current literature on archaeoentomology. While not exhaustive by any means, it is designed to cover the main topics of interest to entomologists and archaeologists working in this odd, dark corner at the intersection of these two disciplines. I have found many obscure works but some publications are not available without a trip to the Royal Society’s library in London or the expenditure of far more funds than I can justify. Still, the goal is to provide in one place, a list, as comprehensive as possible, of the scholarly literature available to a researcher in this area. The main categories are broad but cover the most important subareas of the discipline. Full books are far out-numbered by book chapters and journal articles, although Harry Kenward, well represented here, will be publishing a book in June of 2020 on archaeoentomology. -

Oise amber has eight species, Baltic amber has 118 species, and Rovno amber has 16 species. Nine new genera and 18 new species are described from Baltic amber. Four new synonyms are noted: Palaeometrioxena Legalov, 2012, syn. nov. is synonymous with Archimetrioxena Voss, 1953; Paleopissodes weigangae Ulke, 1947, syn. nov. is synonymous with Electrotribus theryi Hustache, 1942; Electrotribus erectosquamata Rheinheimer, 2007, syn. nov. is synonymous with Succinostyphlus mroczkowskii Kuska, 1996; Protonaupactus Zherikhin, 1971, syn. nov. is synonymous with Paonaupactus Voss, 1953. Keys for Eocene amber Curculionoidea are given. There are the first records of Aedemonini and Camarotini, and genera Limalophus and Cenocephalus in Baltic amber. Introduction The Curculionoidea are one of the largest and most diverse groups of beetles, including more than 62,000 species [1] comprising 11 families [2,3]. They have a complex morphological structure [2–7], ecological confinement, and diverse trophic links [1], which makes them a convenient group for characterizing modern and fossil biocenoses.
