Through intensive R&D and innovation work Ko Group companies are pioneers in technology and product development, always with an eye on sustainable development.

In the Ònew world orderÓ, in which global thinking will dominate, corporations will need to keep up with change and secure sustainable growth. By incorporating new technologies and investing in R&D and innovation, companies can remain competitive. The creation of new products, services and solutions is the only way to make substantial expansions in marketing, sales and operations.

In Turkey, the percentage of total expenditures spent on R&D has increased from 0.53% in 2002 to 0.71% in 2007. Our country ranks 35th in total R&D funding. Although this rate is 1.76% in the EU, between 2002 and 2007, Turkey achieved an 119% increase. Such a dramatic expansion places Turkey second only to China with regard to increasing rates of R&D investment. According to the 2005-2010 National Science and Technology Application Plan, one of the main goals is to increase the total percentage of R&D spending to reach 2% by 2013. Another goal is to increase the number employed in this field from 49,668 in 2007 to 150,000 by 2013. The private sector pays for 41.3% of R&D spending, almost half of the total in this country.

In order to grow and secure sustainable profits, one of Ko Holding's most important priorities is Òto dominate the field of new technologiesÓ. In other words, to become an agent for chance - an active leader rather than a follower. Such a policy is the key to Ko Holding's enduring success. Through intensive R&D and innovation work, Ko Group companies have become the pioneers for sustainable growth with regard to technology and product development. A valuable contribution to the developing national R&D tradition The Ko Technology Board (KTB)

The Ko Group formed a Technology Board with the aim of spreading its accumulated expertise in the field of R&D and technology, first among the Group and then to the whole country. This board is comprised of all R&D managers of Ko Group, who are all working to meet global R&D standards. The production of the first fuel cell in Turkey began as a joint venture by various companies of the Group and the TUBITAK-MAM centre, with the Technology Board at the helm, coordinating the partnership. The Board is looking forward to organizing further joint projects within the Group as well as with other outside companies. An important contribution is thus being made toward furthering a tradition of R&D partnerships in our country. The Ko Technology Board 16 consists of the R&D managers 17 of the Ko Group and works systematically to reach world R&D standards.

One of the Technology Board's work groups wrote the Ko Technologies and Innovations Handbook. The book describes a system based on the practical experience of Group companies, with contributions from leading universities around the world. Under the motto of our founder Vehbi Ko, ÒI prosper with my countryÓ, our Group contributes to the social development of Turkey by leading and implementing several projects, while also supporting the projects of a number of other foundations and NGOs.

Work of the Vehbi Ko Foundation (VKV) Our founder Vehbi Ko's understanding of social responsibility was part of his determination to lead our society's development in the right direction, and, because of his efforts in this regard, he became the pioneer for non-governmental organizations in Turkey. The Vehbi Ko Foundation (VKV), the first private foundation in the Republic of Turkey, serves society by sponsoring programs related to education, health and culture. Through the institutions in which the foundation occupies leading positions, the projects it supports and its regular programs, VKV strives to support a more rapid growth of Turkey, to set examples for the best and to reap lasting benefits through sustainable and reproducible models. The following is a summary of the 2008 activities of the Vehbi Ko Foundation. Education
