This report provides an assessment and compilation of recreation-related monitoring data sources across the National Wilderness Preservation System (NWPS). Telephone interviews with managers of all units of the NWPS and a literature search were conducted to locate studies that provide campsite impact data, trail impact data, and information about visitor characteristics. Of the 628 wildernesses that comprised the NWPS in January 2000, 51 percent had baseline campsite data, 9 percent had trail condition data and 24 percent had data on visitor characteristics. Wildernesses managed by the Forest Service and National Park Service were much more likely to have data than wildernesses managed by the Bureau of Land Management and Fish and Wildlife Service. Both unpublished data collected by the management agencies and data published in reports are included. Extensive appendices provide detailed information about available data for every study that we located. These have been organized by wilderness so that it is easy to locate all the information available for each wilderness in the NWPS. Founding Gardeners. The Revolutionary Generation, Nature, and the Shaping of the American Nation © Andrea Wulf 20131 This paper is based on my book the Founding Gardeners (2011), which examines the creation of the American nation and the lives of George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison through the lens of gardens, landscapes, nature and agriculture. Vegetable plots, ornamental plants, landscapes and forests played a crucial role in America’s struggle for national identity and in the lives of the founding fathers.2 Golden cornfields and endless rows of cotton plants became symbols for America’s economic independence from Britain; towering trees became a reflection of a strong and vigorous nation; native species were imbued with patriotism and proudly planted in gardens, while metaphors drawn from the natural world brought plants and gardening into politics. The founding fathers’ passion for nature, plants, gardens and agriculture is woven deeply into the fabric of America and aligned with their political thought, both reflecting and influencing it. I believe, it’s impossible to understand the making of America without looking at the founding fathers as farmers and gardeners. 1 Bibliography: please refer to my bibliography in Founding Gardener (2011). 2 The term ‘founding fathers’ describes a group with a fluctuating membership. English-Language Graphic Narratives in Canada

I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract This study analyzes the techniques that Canadian comics life writers develop to construct personal histories. I examine a broad selection of texts including graphic autobiography, biography, memoir, and diary in order to argue that writers and readers can, through these graphic narratives, engage with an eclectic and eccentric understanding of Canadian historical subjects. Contemporary Canadian comics are important for Canadian literature and life writing because they acknowledge the importance of contemporary urban and marginal subcultures and function as representations of people who occasionally experience economic scarcity. I focus on stories of “ordinary” people because their stories have often been excluded from accounts of Canadian public life and cultural history. Following the example of Barbara Godard, Heather Murray, and Roxanne Rimstead, I re- evaluate Canadian literatures by considering the importance of marginal literary products. Canadian comics authors rarely construct narratives about representative figures standing in place of and speaking for a broad community; instead, they create what Murray calls “history with a human face . the face of the daily, the ordinary” (“Literary History as Microhistory” 411). -

The author presents and discusses three events that took place over the course of a year. In the first narrative episode, his recent professional development experience at a program inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach enables him to support a teacher who is feeling discouraged about challenging situations in her classroom. -

First and the second segments, both dealing with the subject of our first estate, the pre-mortal existence, our pre-mortal life. Brent, when we think about some things that appeal to people about Mormonism, it seems to me that, that this portion of our doctrine, namely the doctrine that talks about the eternal nature of man, is particularly appealing. Have, have, have you found that to be the case? BRENT TOP: Well, I‟ve had lots of experiences with that. I remember many years ago taking some of our neighbors and friends when we lived in the Washington D.C. area, northern Virginia. Took them at Christmas time to the Washington D.C. Temple Visitors‟ Center and to see the Christmas lights around the temple. And while we were there, we were, we took them in to see Man‟s Search for Happiness, that was very prominent at that time, and was being shown in all of the visitors‟ centers. -

A Curious Collection of Visitors: Travels to Early Modern Cabinets of Curiosity and Museums in England, 1660-1800. Master of Arts (History), May 2014, 81 pp., 10 figures, bibliography, 40 titles. The idea of curiosity has evolved over time and is a major building-block in the foundation and expansion of museums and their precursors, cabinets of curiosity. These proto- museums began in Italy and spread throughout Europe in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Cabinets of curiosity and museums transformed as visitors traveled to burgeoning collections across the Continent and England. Individuals visited curiosities for a variety of reasons. Some treated outings to collections as social events in which they could see others in their social circles and perhaps rise in social status if seen by the correct people. Others were merely curious and hoped to see rare, astonishing, monstrous, and beautiful objects. Scholars of the era often desired to discover new items and ideas, and discuss scientific and philosophical matters. The British Isles are removed from the main body of Europe, but still play a major role in the history of collecting. A number of private collectors and the eventual foundation of the British Museum contributed seminally to the ever-increasing realm of curiosities and historic, cultural, and scientific artifacts.
