Goodall has a sister, Judith, who shares the same birthday, though the two were born four years apart. Africa Goodall had always been passionate about animals and Africa, which brought her to the farm of a friend in the Kenya highlands in 1957.From there, she obtained work as a secretary, and acting on her friend's advice, she telephoned Louis Leakey, a Kenyan archaeologist and palaeontologist, with no other thought than to make an appointment to discuss animals.

She was his radio operator, navigator, and copilot. After his New York to Paris solo flight, May 1927, Lucky Lindy had his choice of copilots. He chose Anne. They met that December when he flew the Spirit of St. Louis to Mexico at the invitation of US Ambassador, Dwight Morrow, Anne’s father. Charles was ready to move on from stunt flying, barnstorming, and competitive racing to serious flight explorations and he wanted to marry. And he wanted to marry a healthy woman who liked flying because he wanted his wife to be his flying companion on expeditions he planned to make. He set his sites on Anne whom he invited to go flying. If all went well in the air as he planned - well. He let her experience the controls and logged in fifty-five minutes as her first flight training. When she told him that night that she wanted to learn to fly, he smiled. They married in May 1929, honeymooned alone-together for three weeks roughing it on a thirty-eight-foot motorboat eating canned goods and drinking ginger ale. The honeymoon Charles planned previewed the couple’s flight adventures to come and provided a peek at his wife in such a situation, a situation Anne enjoyed quiet well. He began her formal flight training immediately with flight aerobatics and landings, pitch angles, bank angles, navigation, calculating arrival based on ground speed, etc. The following year she would fly more than 30,000 miles.

From earliest childhood, she was fascinated by animals and the Africa she discovered in the storybooks of Tarzan and Dr. Doolittle. In 1957, she traveled to the Kenyan farm of a friend's parents and met the famed anthropologist and paleontologist Dr. Louis Leakey. In 1960, at his invitation, she began her landmark study of chimpanzee behavior in what is now Tanzania. Her field research at what was then called Gombe Stream Chimpanzee Reserve-most notably, her discovery that chimpanzees make and use tools-revolutionized the world of primatology and redefined the relationship between humans and animals. In 1977, Dr. Goodall established the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) to advance her vision and work around the world and for generations to come. JGI continues the work at Gombe Stream Research Center and is a global leader in the effort to protect chimpanzees and their habitats. It is widely recognized for building on Dr. Goodall's groundbreaking community-centered approach to conservation and development programs in Africa, and for Roots & Shoots, the global environmental and humanitarian youth program. Dr. Goodall founded Roots & Shoots in 1991 with a group of Tanzanian students. The youth program connects more than 150,000 young people in more than 50 countries, equipping them to take action to make the world a better place for people, animals and the environment. LOUIS Record Vol. 20 No. 5 Sept. 21, 1995 Doctoral programs show improvement in NRC rankings In the rankings released last week by the National Research Council (NRC), "doctoral programs at Wash- ington University made significant strides over the previous rankings con- ducted in 1982," according to Robert Thach, dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Altogether, eight doctoral programs at Washington Uni- versity earned top-10 honors, and five other programs were ranked in the top 25 in one or more of 10 different NRC categories. Among the highlights in the NRC study are top-10 rankings for faculty reputation in German Language and Literature at seventh, Neurosciences at eighth, and Cell and Developmental Biology ranked ninth. Seven Washington University pro- gram areas received top-10 recognition either for the total number of scholarly journal citations, or the total number of scholarly journal citations per faculty member. These may be viewed as two slightly different measures of a program's impact on its field.

Johnson Space Center Houston, Texas 77058 National Aeronautics and Space Administration FRANK BORMAN NASA ASTRONAUT (FORMER) A hero of the American Space Odyssey, Frank Borman led the first team of American astronauts to circle the moon, extending man's horizons into space. He is internationally known as Commander of the 1968 Apollo 8 Mission. A romance with airplanes that began when he was 15 years old, took Frank Borman to the Air Force and then to NASA. A career Air Force officer from 1950, his assignments included service as a fighter pilot, an operational pilot and instructor, an experimental test pilot and an assistant professor of Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics at West Point. When selected by NASA, Frank Borman was instructor at the Aerospace Research Pilot School at Edwards AFB, California. In 1967 he served as a member of the Apollo 204 Fire Investigation Board, investigating the causes of the fire which killed three astronauts aboard an Apollo spacecraft, reminiscent of the Challenger tragedy. Later he became the Apollo Program Resident Manager, heading the team that re- engineered the Apollo spacecraft. He also served as Field Director of NASA's Space Station Task Force. Frank Borman retired from the air Force in 1970, but is well remembered as a part of this nation's history, a pioneer in the exploration of space and a veteran of both the Gemini 7, 1965 Space Orbital Rendezvous with Gemini 6 and the first manned lunar orbital mission, Apollo 8, in 1968. Borman's retirement from the Air Force in 1970 did not end his aviation career.

Equipped with little more than binoculars, a notebook and her fascination with animals, Jane Goodall ventured into what was then called the Gombe Stream Chimpanzee Reserve – embarking on a life of discovery that would redefine the relationship between humans and animals and shape the world of conservation into the 21st century. Valerie Jane Morris-Goodall was born April 3, 1934 in London, England, to Mortimer Herbert Morris-Goodall, a businessman, and Margaret Myfanwe Joseph, a novelist who wrote under the name Vanne Morris-Goodall.
