The United Trust Q&A – with the Cumbrians.net By way of introduction My name is Nigel Davidson and I am responding to the questions posed by members of the Cumbrians.net message board for The United Trust (UT). I felt it was important for me to respond to these questions as a relatively new member of the Trust Board. Other members of the board have seen, agreed and contributed to these answers, however the content below comes mainly from my own perspective as a recently appointed board member who joined the Trust with the specific aim of ‘making a difference’. I also wanted to add a little more information about the Trust, where it is now and where it’s going as well as dispelling some of the spurious rumours that have circulated over the years. I have seen a lot of the social media comment and although I understand where it has come from I can also say that it really is without foundation. We have a really fantastic opportunity here as supporters to become totally involved in our club and I wouldn’t want to see us miss that opportunity. I have been involved with the Trust since returning to live in the area again approximately 2 years ago. I have supported this club since I was about 5 or 6 and I simply love it. Wherever I have lived in the UK I have always made time for Carlisle games, whether that was taking the national express coach down to London to play Fulham on a Tuesday night when I was about 16 or cycling all around the Isle of Man to watch the team in the pre-season tournament in around 1985 or more recently driving from Milton Keynes to Hartlepool for a Tuesday night game and still getting back in time for work on the Wednesday (That was a great 4-0 away win and a happy trip back!).

QUESTIONS BROUGHT TO CUSG MEETING ON MON 16 DECEMBER 2019 BY THE USERS OF THECUMBRIANS.NET FORUM • No Group is made/forced to answer any question and does so at their own behest. • Some Groups have answered both their own specific questions and the ones that were marked ‘All in attendance’, others have answered just their own specific questions. • If a Group hasn’t answered their questions, a simple ‘No answer received’ has been written. This is in the interests of clarity within the CUSG Group. • TheCumbrians.net would like to thank all those who replied on behalf of those who submitted questions. QUESTIONS FOR CUFC: NOTE – ANSWERS PROVIDED BY NIGEL CLIBBENS – MEDIA ANSWERS BY ANDY HALL. BOARDROOM BUSINESS: Q1 We understand Phillip Day is taking the shares in the club. How long will it take? I have no information on that point. Q2 According to Michael Knighton, Andrew Jenkins would never accept an offer for the club if it meant him leaving. According to Kirdi, "Mr Jenkins will never leave". According to the Trust, Andrew Jenkins said to Fred Story that Robin Browns consortium were trying to take the club from him and spoilt his christmas that year. Admittedly not all are creditable people but the theme remains the same - therefore is it correct Mr Jenkins would never give up a director role in Carlisle United if an appropriate offer came in? No - it is not correct to say that. My reasons for disagreeing (not including your own statement “not all are creditable people”) are: 1 Two of your three quotes do not actually support the claim at all.

  • Football Fandom and Political Engagement in Manchester
Cultures of Resistance and Compliance: Football Fandom and Political Engagement in Manchester Christopher Porter Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the Manchester Metropolitan University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Sociology Faculty of Humanities, Law and Social Sciences August 2011 ABSTRACT This thesis presents an interpretative analysis of contemporary football culture in Manchester, as it encounters and reacts to significant structural transformations between the years 2003 and 2009. Of prime concern therefore is how locally constituted elements of cultural identification react to processes of globalisation and ‘hyper-commodification’ (Giulianotti, 2002). While the research field retains a relatively broad local focus on football fandom in Manchester, its core findings rest predominantly on the politicised culture observed within independently organised formations of Manchester United supporters before, during and after the club’s 2005 takeover by Malcolm Glazer. Manchester City’s 2003 move from their traditional home at Maine Road, and the club’s subsequent takeovers, first by Thaksin Shinawatra and more recently by the Abu Dhabi United Group, provide fascinating parallel context due mainly to the lack of oppositional organisation and discourse amongst the club’s support. This is highlighted particularly emphatically when the Manchester United supporters’ ‘breakaway’ club FC United of Manchester is considered, although the more compliant characteristics in football fandom generally are acknowledged throughout. A critical research paradigm ensures that due consideration is taken of what Raymond Williams called the “structuring formations”, within which these experiences and understandings occur (Gibson, 2000: 264). This account draws upon the researcher’s immersed perspective to examine how traditional notions of authenticity are articulated and understood within English football culture.
