She has worked on fragments of literary papyri, on Hellenistic history and poetry, on the reception of lyric poetry and especially on epigram. James J. Clauss is professor of classics at the University of Washington (Seat- tle). He is coeditor of A Companion to Hellenistic Literature (2010) and The Gods of Greek Poetry (2016). Dee Clayman is professor of classics at Brooklyn College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Her most recent work includes books on Timon of Phlius and the Ptolemaic queen Berenice II. Christophe Cusset, a fellow of the École Normale Supérieure de Fontenay/ Saint- Cloud, is professor of Greek literature at the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon. He has published commentaries on Theocritus’ Idylls 26 and 6, Eupho- rion, and Lycophron. Claudio De Stefani is associate professor of Greek Literature at the Università degli Studi II, Naples. In addition to works on Nonnus and Paul the Silentiary, he has published an Arabic translation of Galen’s De differentiis febrium. Marco Fantuzzi teaches classics at the University of Macerata (Italy). He is the author, most recently, of Achilles in Love: An Intertextual Approach (2012) and the co- editor of The Greek Epic Cycle and its Ancient Reception (2015). Andrew Ford is the Ewing Professor of Greek Language and Literature at Princeton University and the author of, most recently, Aristotle as Poet: The Song for Hermias and Its Contexts (2011). 2RPP xviii about the contributors Kathryn Gutzwiller is professor of classics at the University of Cincinnati and is past president of the American Philological Association. Her books include Theocritus’ Pastoral Analogies: The Formation of a Genre and Poetic Garlands: Hellenistic Epigrams in Context. Johanna Hanink is associate professor of classics at Brown University in Prov- idence, Rhode Island. She received her PhD in 2010 from Queens’ College, Cambridge. Her first book, Lycurgan Athens and the Making of Classical Trag- edy, was published in 2014 by Cambridge University Press. She continues to work on the reception of Greek drama in antiquity, as well as on inscribed verse epigram. Regina Höschele is associate professor of classics at the University of Toronto. Her research interests lie mainly in Hellenistic and Roman poetry, as well as in imperial Greek literature. She is the author of Verrückt nach Frauen: der Epi- grammatiker Rufin (2006) and, with Peter Bing, the co- editor of Aristaenetus: Erotic Letters (2014). Richard Hunter is Regius Professor of Greek at the University of Cambridge and a fellow of Trinity College. His most recent books are Hesiodic Voices: Stud- ies in the Ancient Reception of Hesiod’s Works and Days (2014) and Apollonius of Rhodes. Argonautica Book IV (2015). David Konstan teaches at New York University. His research focuses on ancient Greek and Latin literature, especially comedy and the novel, and on classical philosophy. Pauline LeVen is associate professor of classics at Yale University. She is the author of The Many- Headed Muse: Tradition and Innovation in Late Classical Greek Lyric Poetry (2014) and is now working on music and sound-related questions in her next book, The Music of Nature in Greek and Roman Myths. Kelly MacFarlane is faculty lecturer at the University of Alberta, where she teaches a variety of courses in Greek and Latin language and literature. Her main research interest is Greek poetry, especially the poetic accounts of the Persian Wars, and Latin pedagogy. Enrico Magnelli teaches Greek literature at the University of Florence. He has published widely on Greek poetry from the Hellenistic to the Byzantine period, Attic comedy, and Greek meter. 2RPP about the contributors xix Jackie Murray is assistant professor of classics at the University of Kentucky. She has published several articles on various aspects of Hellenistic poetry, including gender, genre, and reception in Latin poetry. Pura Nieto Hernández is senior lecturer in classics at Brown University. She was born in Salamanca, Spain, where she studied classics as an undergraduate and graduate student and taught before coming to Brown. Her primary areas of research are Homer, the history of the Greek language, and Greek literature and mythology. Maria Noussia- Fantuzzi is assistant professor of Greek at the Aristotle Uni- versity of Thessaloniki, having previously taught at various universities in the United States and Italy. She is the author of Solon the Athenian, the Poetic Frag- ments (2010) and coedited Solon in the Making: the Early Reception in the Fifth and Fourth Centuries (2015) with Gregory Nagy. S. Douglas Olson is Distinguished McKnight University Professor in the Department of Classical and Near Eastern Studies at the University of Minne- sota and is closely associated with the Heidelberg Academy Komfrag project. He is the author of twenty books, including full-scale editions of and com- mentaries on Aristophanes’ Acharnians, Peace, Thesmophoriazusae (with Colin Austin) and Wasps (with Zachary Biles); the Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite; the fragments of Archestratus of Gela and Matro of Pitane (both with Alexander Sens); the fragments of the public inscriptions relating to the Athenian dra- matic competitions (with Benjamin Millis); and the fragments of the comic poet Eupolis. Floris Overduin is assistant professor of Greek at Radboud University, Nijme- gen, the Netherlands. His main interest is in Hellenistic and imperial didactic poetry. He is the author of Nicander of Colophon’s Theriaca. A Literary Com- mentary (2015). Richard Rawles teaches in the Department of Classics at the University of Edinburgh. He has published on various aspects of archaic, early classical, and Hellenistic Greek poetry. He coedited Reading the Victory Ode (2012) and Receiving the Komos (2012) with Peter Agocs and Chris Carey. Ralph Rosen is the Vartan Gregorian Professor of the Humanities in the Department of Classical Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. He has pub- lished widely on Greek and Roman literature, with special interests in ancient comedy and satire, intellectual history, and ancient medicine. 2RPP xx about the contributors Chad Schroeder is an independent scholar whose work has focused on the interplay between Hellenistic poetry, material culture, and scholarship. He has taught at Cornell University, Emory University, and the University of Califor- nia, Santa Barbara. Alexander Sens is the Markos and Eleni Tsakopoulos Kounalakis Chair of Hel- lenic Studies at Georgetown University. His research interests lie principally in poetry of the late classical and early Hellenistic periods. Most recently, he has been working primarily on Hellenistic epigram and Lycophron’s Alexandra. David Sider, who teaches at New York University, writes on Greek poetry and philosophy, with articles on Heraclitus, Sappho, Pindar, Plato, Empedo- cles, Aeschylus, Parmenides, and others. His books include The Fragments of Anaxagoras (1981; 2nd ed., 2005) and The Epigrams of Philodemos (1998). He edited, with C. Wolfram Brunschön, Theophrastus of Eresus, “On Weather Signs” (2007); with Deborah Boedeker, the essay collection The New Simonides (2001); and with Dirk Obbink, a collection of essays on Heraclitus and Pythag- oras, Doctrine and Doxography (2013). Evina Sistakou is associate professor of Greek literature at the Aristotle Uni- versity of Thessaloniki. Her publications include Tragic Failures: Alexandrian Responses to Tragedy and the Tragic (2016), The Aesthetics of Darkness: A Study of Hellenistic Romanticism in Apollonius, Lycophron, and Nicander (Louvain, 2012), Reconstructing the Epic: Cross- Readings of the Trojan Myth in Hellenistic Poetry (2008), and, in Modern Greek, The Geography of Callimachus and Helle- nistic Avant- Garde Poetry (2005). Michael Tueller, associate professor of classics at Arizona State University, is the author of Look Who’s Talking: Innovations in Voice and Identity in Hellenistic Epigram (2008) and several articles on Hellenistic poetry. He is currently revis- ing the Greek Anthology for the Loeb Classical Library. Athanassios Vergados teaches at the University of Heidelberg. He has also taught at Franklin and Marshall College and the University of Tennessee and has held a two- year research fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the University of Heidelberg.   • Poetic Authority and Oral Tradition in Hesiod and Pindar
    CHAPTER SIX POETIC AUTHORITY AND ORAL TRADITION IN HESIOD AND PINDAR Ruth Scodel Elsewhere, I have discussed the distinction Homer makes, especially in the Odyssey, between the songs of bards and other storytelling.1 This argument rests especially on three recent insights that appear to point in quite opposite directions. First, Andrew Ford shows in Homer: the Poetry of the Past how the Odyssey evades the reality of the transmission of poetic tradition as well as that of bardic contests. The Muses simply replace poets’ teachers; the narrative content of per- formance has no naturalistic source.2 S. Douglas Olson has shown in Blood and Iron how richly the same epic depicts the workings of everyday oral tradition, its considerable interest in how news gets around.3 Third, Louise Pratt argues convincingly that the truth-claims of early Greek poetry need to be interpreted relative to their rhetor- ical functions in context. While only fables are truly fiction, for most poetic narrative historical accuracy is not the primary concern.4 Homer, then, shows how people in reality create and spread kleos, but he seems to want to avoid facing the obvious implication that poetic performances depend on what earlier storytellers have trans- mitted. The proem to the Catalogue of Ships perfectly demonstrates this peculiarity in its distinction between the Muses, who see and hear everything, and poet and audience, who only hear the kleos and know nothing (Il. 2.484–93). So in asking why Homer does not acknowledge openly that his stories depend on tradition, I looked at what distinguishes bardic performances from other storytelling prac- tices in Homer, and concluded that the most important distinctions 1 R.

    Lycophron: a Minor Sophist or a Minor Socratic? Stefania Giombini University of Girona Keywords: Lycophron, Minor Sophists, Minor Socratics, Ancient Social Contract Foreword Gregory Vlastos (1907-1991)1 was one of the greatest innovators in the studies of ancient philosophy, a scholar capable of changing methods and attitudes, a model of reference around the world for scholars who have taken his style and approach. In 2014 I have been able to frequent the Harry Ransom Center of the University of Texas at Austin -HRC-2 to study Vlastos’ work and personal materials in The Vlastos Archive. The archive is a variegated and pluri-thematic fund: firstly, I focused on Vlastos’ correspondence (especially the one with Italian scholars). This way, I could suddenly ascertain how the size of Vlastos as a researcher and human being was thick: he interacted with energy and interest with every interlocutor, and those closer to him and those unknown, meticulously preserving even small fragments with names, letters and so on, to avoid losing data and keep memory of everything. Subsequently, extending our investigation to the rest of the archive, an immense amount of notes, books with references, glosses and underlines. While reading the notes I ran across some pages, typewritten, dedicated to the contract theory in Glaucon, Protagoras, Antiphon (obviously including the positions of Plato and Socrates.)3 The pages are not dated, and they get into the themes of social contract and justice. Reading these notes he made me rediscover a minor author of Ancient Philosophy: Lycophron. The following work is born on the interest generated by these readings, from an approach towards the private world of Gregory Vlastos.

  • Citations in Classics and Ancient History
    Citations in Classics and Ancient History The most common style in use in the field of Classical Studies is the author-date style, also known as Chicago 2, but MLA is also quite common and perfectly acceptable. Quick guides for each of MLA and Chicago 2 are readily available as PDF downloads. The Chicago Manual of Style Online offers a guide on their web-page: http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html The Modern Language Association (MLA) does not, but many educational institutions post an MLA guide for free access. While a specific citation style should be followed carefully, none take into account the specific practices of Classical Studies. They are all (Chicago, MLA and others) perfectly suitable for citing most resources, but should not be followed for citing ancient Greek and Latin primary source material, including primary sources in translation. Citing Primary Sources: Every ancient text has its own unique system for locating content by numbers. For example, Homer's Iliad is divided into 24 Books (what we might now call chapters) and the lines of each Book are numbered from line 1. Herodotus' Histories is divided into nine Books and each of these Books is divided into Chapters and each chapter into line numbers. The purpose of such a system is that the Iliad, or any primary source, can be cited in any language and from any publication and always refer to the same passage. That is why we do not cite Herodotus page 66. Page 66 in what publication, in what edition? Very early in your textbook, Apodexis Historia, a passage from Herodotus is reproduced.

Briggs, Jr N 1898 Charles Eliot Norton, the nation's foremost champion of I Dante and a leading Northern literary critic who influenced a host of literary figures from Henry James to T. s. Eliot,l wrote to Basil Lanneau Gildersleeve, the nation's most visible representative of German philological training and a man of considerable critical ability. Named emeritus at Harvard in November 1897, with his duties confined to teaching a small class in Dante, Norton was depressed at the thought of retirement,2 and sought the advice of his Southern near-contemporary on the Greek view of the ages of man and its accompanying virtues, as described in Pindar Nemean 3.70-75. Gil­ dersleeve's answer, one of his rare letters on purely philological matters, gives considerable insight into his critical method. The poem in question is a hymn on the victory in the pancration by Aristocleides, an Aeginetan. It opens with a picture of the youths standing on the banks of the Asopus waiting for the Muse to arrive with their victory song (1-8). The Muse is to sing of Aegina, which the victor has ennobled by a triumph worthy of the Myrmidons, and he has thus figuratively passed the pillars of Heracles (9-26). The mention of Heracles leads Pindar to digress on the Aeacids, Peleus, Telamon (31-42), and the young Achilles (43-63).

This investigation proposes a historical theory of the origins of political philosophy. It is assumed that political philosophy was made possible by a new form of political thinking commencing with the inauguration of the first direct democracies in Ancient Greece. The pristine turn from elite rule to rule of the people – or to δημοκρατία, a term coined after the event – brought with it the first ever political theory, wherein fundamentally different societal orders, or different principles of societal rule, could be argumentatively compared. The inauguration of this alternative-envisioning “secular” political theory is equaled with the beginnings of classical political theory and explained as the outcome of the conjoining of a new form of constitutionalized political thought (cratistic thinking) and a new emphasis brought to the inner consistency of normative reasoning (‘internal critique’). The original form of political philosophy, Classical Political Philosophy, originated when a political thought launched, wherein non-divinely sanctioned visions of transcendence of the prevailing rule, as well as of the full range of alternatives disclosed by Classical Political Theory, first began to be envisioned.

    Pindar Fr. 75 SM and the Politics of Athenian Space Richard T. Neer and Leslie Kurke Towns are the illusion that things hang together somehow. Anne Carson, “The Life of Towns” T IS WELL KNOWN that Pindar’s poems were occasional— composed on commission for specific performance settings. IBut they were also, we contend, situational: mutually im- plicated with particular landscapes, buildings, and material artifacts. Pindar makes constant reference to precious objects and products of craft, both real and metaphorical; he differs, in this regard, from his contemporary Bacchylides. For this reason, Pindar provides a rich phenomenology of viewing, an insider’s perspective on the embodied experience of moving through a built environment amidst statues, buildings, and other monu- ments. Analysis of the poetic text in tandem with the material record makes it possible to reconstruct phenomenologies of sculpture, architecture, and landscape. Our example in this essay is Pindar’s fragment 75 SM and its immediate context: the cityscape of early Classical Athens. Our hope is that putting these two domains of evidence together will shed new light on both—the poem will help us solve problems in the archaeo- logical record, and conversely, the archaeological record will help us solve problems in the poem. Ultimately, our argument will be less about political history, and more about the ordering of bodies in space, as this is mediated or constructed by Pindar’s poetic sophia.   • The Χορός of Danaids in Pindar's Pythian 9

Myers Stanford University Abstract: This paper offers a new interpretation of Pindar’s Pythian 9.112-16, which relates the story of Danaos marrying off his forty-eight daughters. Previously, these lines have been understood as describing a footrace by the daughter’s suitors to determine which suitor would marry which daughter. By reanalyzing Pindar’s diction I suggest that this passage also depicts Danaos’ daughters in the marked terms of choral performance. This interpretation not only matches the representation of the Danaids as a performing chorus in Phyrnicus’ Danaids and Aeschylus’ Suppliants, but it also further illuminates the way desire permeates and organizes this particular Pindaric ode. 1 Footrace, Dance, and Desire: The χορός of Danaids in Pindar’s Pythian 91 This paper offers a new interpretation of Pindar’s Pythian 9.112-16. These verses have been understood as a description of how Danaos married off his daughters through a footrace he held for their suitors.2 By reanalyzing Pindar’s diction I shall suggest that the text also depicts the Danaids in the marked terms of choral performance. This interpretation not only matches the representation of the Danaids as a performing chorus in Phyrnicus’ Danaids and Aeschylus’ Suppliants, but it also further illuminates the way desire permeates and organizes Pythian 9.3 I shall propose that Pindar portrays the Danaids in this manner in order to represent the connection between athletics, chorality, and marriage.
