Blazich Jr., PhD Naval History and Heritage Command Introduction This document is intended to provide readers with a chronological progression of the activities of the United States Navy and its involvement with World War I as an outside observer, active participant, and victor engaged in the war’s lingering effects in the postwar period. The document is not a comprehensive timeline of every action, policy decision, or ship movement. What is provided is a glimpse into how the 20th century’s first global conflict influenced the Navy and its evolution throughout the conflict and the immediate aftermath. The source base is predominately composed of the published records of the Navy and the primary materials gathered under the supervision of Captain Dudley Knox in the Historical Section in the Office of Naval Records and Library. A thorough chronology remains to be written on the Navy’s actions in regard to World War I. The nationality of all vessels, unless otherwise listed, is the United States. All errors and omissions are solely those of the author. The destruction of the Japanese Naval Base at Truk was an important event in the American strategy to end World War II and it had a profound effect on the indigenous inhabitants. Divers from all over the world visit Truk Lagoon to dive the 50 shipwrecks and numerous aircraft. The paper investigates the significance of the sites in accordance with the criteria for world heritage listing, and in context with Pacific Island Nations requirements. © 2004 The Nautical Archaeology Society Key words: World War II, Truk Lagoon, shipwreck, World Heritage Site. Wallace Captain Samuel Alexander Written by Tom Leary They were called “90 Day Wonders:” College educated young men who were trained to serve as Reserve Officers to meet the needs of the Navy’s vastly expanded fleet in the years 1940-45. For some career military men, with far more training and experience, the label was not initially intended to be a compliment. But, this initial cynicism proved to be unfounded. Most of the Reserve Officers served with distinction; a few, like banner honoree Samuel Hugh Alexander, were truly outstanding. He completed his accelerated program in the summer of 1940 and joined the U.S. Pacific Fleet. The early months were uneventful. In the fall of 1942, Sam was serving as a Lieutenant Junior Grade aboard the Battleship Idaho. When the ship was temporarily docked in Bremerton, Washington, he went to a party at a local yacht club and there met an 18- year-old young lady named Helen Wilson. After a whirlwind two-month courtship, they were married in December. The marriage lasted for almost 70 years, but their initial life as a couple was cut short in January of 1943. -

USS BENNINGTON CV/CVA/CVS-20 TIME LINE 15 December 1941 - 7 December 1994 15 December 1941 The 76th Congress of the United States authorized the construction of the United States Ship BENNINGTON. 15 December 1942 Keel laid down at the New York Naval Shipyard in Brooklyn, NY 26 February 1944 Launched from the New York Navy Yard by Mrs. Melvin J. Maas, wife of Congressman Maas of Minnesota. BENNINGTON was the first of the “Essex Class” carriers to be built in the New York Navy Yard and it was also the first carrier to be built in a dry- dock. 6 August 1944 Rear Admiral Monroe Kelley, USN, Commandant, Third Naval District, placed the USS BENNINGTON CV- 20 in commission at the New York Naval Yard in Brooklyn, NY. Captain James B. Sykes, USN, of Washington, D.C., assumed command. BENNINGTON was moored starboard side to Pier K, Berth 19. 1 – 7 September 1944 Commenced Dock Trials. Rear Admiral A.G. Robinson, USN, and the Board of Inspection and Survey completed inspection of the ship. 12 September 1944 USS BENNINGTON got underway for the first time. Cleared the dock and stood down East River and Upper Bay. Anchored in Berth 20, Upper Bay, New York Harbor. Underway for dry-dock, Bayonne, New Jersey. ‘Thedestroyer USS Hawkins (DD 873) takes “white water” over the bow during refueling operations with Task Force 60, Hawkins, a 32-year-old Gearingclass (FRAM I) destroyer, recently returned from her I7th, and last, deployment to the Mediterranean. With her return, the era of the deploying FRAM I destroyer in the Mediterranean and Atlantic came to a close. Commissioned in February 1945, Hawkins was named in honor of Marine 1st LT William Dean Hawkins, killed in action on Tarawa in 1943. My name if Floyd Cox and I am a volunteer at the National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg, Texas. We are here in San Antonio, Texas to interview Admiral Lewis Hopkins. Admiral Hopkins retired July 1, 1974 as Rear Admiral upper half, which is a two star admiral. Admiral, thank you for taking the time to visit with me today concerning your World War II experiences. I would like to start out just asking you some basic background questions about where you were born and your family. Admiral Hopkins: I was born in a small community called Lutherville, Georgia in Meriwether county. It was an unincorporated area and I guess if you would draw a circle around what you would call a community there would have been about two hundred and fifty people there. It was a farming community with family farms. Everybody was very poor. We didn't know it because everybody else was that way. I grew up on this farm and I guess you could call my Dad a share cropper. -

Putting these words into print have made them more real. We are located in the heart of Pearl Harbor, on the hallowed grounds of an American World War II battlefield, in buildings that withstood the attack, and on whose walls messages from those who served are carved in perpetuity. We believe their spirits live on in our hangars. This place matters—our hundreds of volunteers, through their dedication and their service, reiterate this daily. They share our significance with visitors, especially young people, and are happy to pass on the stories about this place that they glean from visitors. This circle of connectivity advances a personal “research” that dramatically enriches our interpretive experience. Just a month ago, four brothers who witnessed the December 7, 1941, attack visited with us. They were having a reunion. Given their age, these special annual reunion trips to Pearl Harbor are cherished. One brother now resides on the mainland and three live in Hawaii. Sitting in our café, they were once again young boys ranging in age from 6–12, remembering the shock of the attack, running for cover, feeling aghast at the sights, smells, and sounds of the battle. Sitting together and talking, they shared sad memories of visiting friends forced to live in the Honouliuli Internment camps, being released early from school to harvest pineapples, seeing prisoners of war walking in the fields.
