However, the 1915- 1964 period of significance extends beyond 50 years and makes the eligibility of the property subject to Criterion Consideration G. The 1964 termination date is well founded in regard to the use and operation of the station, but none of the previously unevaluated structures which are now considered contributing were constructed after 1938. Since none of the contributing structures are less than fifty years old, it is the suggestion of the SHPO that the period of significance be revised to eliminate the necessity of justifying the station's eligibility under Criterion G. - California ~tdteHistoric Preservation Officer Date Please return fortns to the attc~ltionof: krin7ball Koch C.:zr(fura/Landscupc Progrum Leud-Oakland Nutioilul Park Service Puc{fi~We.st Region~rlOfice-Oaklund I I I I .Iackson St. Suita 700 Oakland, CA, 94607 (510) 8/7-1396 kirni~all.-koch(~~~.~s~gorv 09/27/2006 WED 13:59 [TX/RX NO 91311 @I004 United States Coast Guard Fort Point Station Historic District Golden Gate National Recreation Area Table of Contents Part 1 Executive Summary ...................................................................................................................... 1 Park Information............................................................................................................................ 3 Property Level and CLI Number ...................................................................................................3 Inventory Summary....................................................................................................................... 3 Landscape Description ................................................................................................................. 4 CLI Hierarchy Description ............................................................................................................. 5 Location Map ................................................................................................................................ 5 Boundary Description.................................................................................................................... 6 Regional Context .......................................................................................................................... 6 Site Plan........................................................................................................................................ 7 Chronology.................................................................................................................................. 10 Statement of Significance ........................................................................................................... 19 History Part 2 Introduction ..................................................................................................................... 26 Historical Background ..................................................................................................... 26 U.S. Coast Guard Fort Point Station from 1886-1915 .................................................... 32 Rebuilding on a New Location (1915-1964).................................................................... 39 Service in Peace and War (1920-1964) .......................................................................... 45 Decline of the Fort Point Lifeboat Station (1964-present) ............................................... 49 Analysis and Evaluation Part 3 Summary......................................................................................................................... 57 Natural Systems and Features........................................................................................ 59 Spatial Organization........................................................................................................ 61 Vegetation ....................................................................................................................... 62 Circulation ....................................................................................................................... 66 Buildings and Structures ................................................................................................. 71 Small-Scale Features...................................................................................................... 79 Management Information Part 4 Descriptive and Geographic Information......................................................................... 82 National Register Information.......................................................................................... 82 Cultural Landscape Type and Use.................................................................................. 83 General Management Information .................................................................................. 85 Management Category.................................................................................................... 85 Condition Assessment and Impacts................................................................................ 85 Agreements, Legal Interest, and Access .......................................................................
