March 2009 ~ Adar/Nisan 5769 A VIEW FROM THE PULPIT Limmud Atlanta Impressions of the Food Festival A splendid opportunity to deepen our understanding of Judaism in a remarkable conference As I write this, I have just coming up in Atlanta has come to my attention. Intermarriage and Jewish Leadership in the United States
Steven Bayme Intermarriage and Jewish Leadership in the United States There is a conflict between personal interests and collective Jewish welfare. As private citizens, we seek the former; as Jewish leaders, however, our primary concern should be the latter. Jewish leadership is entrusted with strengthening the collective Jewish endeavor. The principle applies both to external questions of Jewish security and to internal questions of the content and meaning of leading a Jewish life. Countercultural Messages Two decades ago, the American Jewish Committee (AJC) adopted a “Statement on Mixed Marriage.”1 The statement was reaffirmed in 1997 and continues to represent the AJC’s view regarding Jewish communal policy on this difficult and divisive issue. The document, which is nuanced and calls for plural approaches, asserts that Jews prefer to marry other Jews and that efforts at promoting endogamy should be encouraged. Second, when a mixed marriage occurs, the best outcome is the conversion of the non-Jewish spouse, thereby transforming a mixed marriage into an endogamous one. When conversion is not possible, efforts should be directed at encouraging the couple to raise their children exclusively as Jews. All three messages are countercultural in an American society that values egalitarianism, universalism, and multiculturalism. Preferring endogamy contradicts a universalist ethos of embracing all humanity. Encouraging conversion to Judaism suggests preference for one faith over others. Advocating that children be raised exclusively as Jews goes against multicultural diversity, which proclaims that having two faiths in the home is richer than having a single one. It is becoming increasingly difficult for Jewish leaders to articulate these messages. -

It has been a year in which we have been able to focus the organisation’s mission and purpose and to embark upon a process in which we can develop a new five-year strategy that all our stakeholders can support. As a parent of a daughter with a severe learning disability, I know only too well the essential role that organisations such as Langdon play in the lives of members and their families and the challenge of working against the low expectations that society has of people with learning disabilities and those with autistic spectrum disorders. We aspire to provide a ‘greenhouse’ for our members, in which our members, rather than a ‘warehouse’ in which it is too easy to see care as a need in itself rather than a means to much more positive outcomes. Our staff are the most important asset of the organisation and the past year has demonstrated the significant amount of work we have to do to equip them to have the depth of skills and knowledge required to meet our members’ needs. -

It exists to promote and defend the religious and civil liberties of British Jewry and to promote its standing. Nearly 300 Deputies represent local communities and organisations in a democratically elected body ZKLFKLVWKHƪUVWSRUWRIFDOOIRUJRYHUQPHQWDQGRWKHUIDLWKJURXSVRQLVVXHV relating to the Jewish community. On issues of importance, such as Holocaust remembrance and education, the Board reaches out through its Deputies and its close relationship with the other organisations to the whole community to consult and to listen, ensuring that we speak with a strong and consistent voice. Most of the community’s major communal organisations have contributed to this document and are listed in Appendix 1, along with details of our consultation process. Many are also submitting their own documents. We particularly urge the Commission to consider, alongside this document, submissions from the main synagogal bodies, the Regional Representative Councils, the Scottish Council of Jewish Communities, and of course, the Charedi community, each of which bring a particular perspective. -

This study explores various types of secondary education that are categorised under one of two generic terms - Jewish secondary education or secondary education for Jews. The former describes institutions, offered by individual Jews, which provided a blend of religious and/or secular education. The latter focuses on non-Jewish schools which accepted Jews (and some which did not but were, nevertheless, attended by Jews). Whilst this work emphasises London and its environs, other areas of Jewish residence, both major and minor, are also investigated. -

With 8,621 responses nationally, it is not only the largest such study ever conducted in Australia but one of the largest samples ever collected across the globe in a national Jewish community study. Even before considering the findings, this highlights the success, nature and engagement of our dedicated community. A survey is only as good as the willingness of participants to complete it. -

Holocaust Educational Trust Lessons from Auschwitz Project Briefing for Nicola Sturgeon MSP, First Minister One day visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau – background information Tuesday 30th October Holocaust Educational Trust’s Lessons from Auschwitz Project The Holocaust Educational Trust’s Lessons from Auschwitz Project for post-16 students and teachers is now in its nineteenth year and has taken over 37,000 students and teachers from across the UK to the Nazi concentration and death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. The four-part course is open to two students from every school and college in England, Scotland and Wales, and incorporates a one-day visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau. The visits, combined with Orientation and Follow-Up Seminars, leave an unforgettable emotional and educational mark on participants. The Project aims to increase knowledge and understanding of the Holocaust based on the premise that ‘hearing is not like seeing’ and to signal what can happen if prejudice and racism become acceptable. Since 2009 funding has been provided by the Scottish Government, enabling us to deliver two Lessons from Auschwitz Projects per year from Scotland. We are grateful to the Scottish Government for its support and we currently receive a grant of £296,000 per annum to deliver the project. This current round of funding runs to April 2019. The Lessons from Auschwitz Project is open to two students aged 16-18 (in S5 or S6) from each secondary school in Scotland. The Project is promoted by a mailing being sent to schools with details of each course and a brochure (see attached). The Project is well established in schools across Scotland with demand for places being high.
