This paper concerns the life-cycle of Carabus dufouri Dejean 1829, one of the most representative species of Carabus in the south of the Iberian Peninsula. The study is based on data of the annual activity patterns in the natural habitat, on anatomical ob servations related to the sex and age of the specimens, on the reproductive condition of females and, finally, on the results of labora tory rearing experiments carried out to study the oviposition patterns and the course of development of immature stages. The results indicate that C. dufouri shows the annual rhythm of autumn breeders. However, the rhythm may also be related to the winter-breeder type ofNorth Africa. Matalin Moscow State Pedagogical University, Moscow, 129278 Russia e-mail: [email protected] Received April 12, 2006 Abstract—An original classification of the life cycles of ground beetles from Western Palaearctic is proposed. The classification is based on a combination of five criteria: duration, number of generations per season, phenology of reproduction, stability, and repeatability of reproduction. According to the individual lifespan, the cycles are subdi- vided into annual and biennial ones. The annual life cycles may be uni- and bivoltine, whereas biennial ones are always univoltine. By the time of reproduction, winter-spring, spring, spring-summer, early summer, summer, late summer, summer-autumnal, autumnal, autumn-winter, winter, and aseasonal species are distinguished. The biennial and bivoltine cycles may be of both facultative and obligate nature. Species living only one season and having a continuous reproductive period are designated as semelparous, while those breeding during two or more years or having several distinct periods of reproduction in one season, as iteroparous. By now, 30 variants of life cycles in Carabidae from western Palaearctic have been established. Repeated similarly directed modifications of the life cy- cle may produce essentially different seasonal rhythms in some individuals. In this case, two subpopulation groups usually appear within the population. Under the most unfavorable conditions, these groups become practically iso- lated and hibernate at different ontogenetic stages. -

The work also included an exotic forest in the second year. During this study, a total of 11 294 individuals of carabids from 101 different species were sampled (2001: N = 4776, S = 80; 2002: N = 6518, S = 77). Agriculture unit recorded the highest abundance and richness levels, while the exotic forest recorded the lowest values. Moreover, higher diversity levels were observed in units dominated by open areas, particularly pastures. -

The Carabids were pitfall-trapped in Madrid in 43 sites in the city interior and in its surroundings from late June to early August 1986. Altogether 78 species were recorded. They represented 6.7% of the Carabid fauna of the Iberian Peninsula. The communities consisted exclusively of small or medium sized species. There was not recorded any species of the genus Carabus in the city interior in spite of the fact that there exist very extensive areas of seminatural vegetation like the Casa de Campo park. However, their absence in the material from such places could result just from the fact that the sampling took place in the warmest and driest part of the year. Unlike cities in other areas, the Carabid communities of Madrid consisted of a considerable portion of West Mediterranean species or even of the Iberian endemics like Calathus granatensis. In contrast, in the city interior, especially in watered grassy plots, an obvious convergence to the fauna of Central European cities and, at a more general level, even to the East Asian cities was observed. The species of larger distributional areas prevailed there. The communities in the seminatural habitats showed very low diversity indices, similarly as in the analogous habitats in Central Europe. In seminatural habitats a considerable portion of highly specialized granivorous species of the genera Ditomus, Carterus and Acinopus was recorded.
