FY14 Tappin' Study Guide
Student Matinee Series Maurice Hines is Tappin’ Thru Life Study Guide Created by Miller Grove High School Drama Class of Joyce Scott As part of the Alliance Theatre Institute for Educators and Teaching Artists’ Dramaturgy by Students Under the guidance of Teaching Artist Barry Stewart Mann Maurice Hines is Tappin’ Thru Life was produced at the Arena Theatre in Washington, DC, from Nov. 15 to Dec. 29, 2013 The Alliance Theatre Production runs from April 2 to May 4, 2014 The production will travel to Beverly Hills, California from May 9-24, 2014, and to the Cleveland Playhouse from May 30 to June 29, 2014. Reviews Keith Loria, on theatermania.com, called the show “a tender glimpse into the Hineses’ rise to fame and a touching tribute to a brother.” Benjamin Tomchik wrote in Broadway World, that the show “seems determined not only to love the audience, but to entertain them, and it succeeds at doing just that! While Tappin' Thru Life does have some flaws, it's hard to find anyone who isn't won over by Hines showmanship, humor, timing and above all else, talent.” In The Washington Post, Nelson Pressley wrote, “’Tappin’ is basically a breezy, personable concert. The show doesn’t flinch from hard-core nostalgia; the heart-on-his-sleeve Hines is too sentimental for that. It’s frankly schmaltzy, and it’s barely written — it zips through selected moments of Hines’s life, creating a mood more than telling a story. it’s a pleasure to be in the company of a shameless, ebullient vaudeville heart.” Maurice Hines Is . -

Power of the Proverbs
POWERINTHEPROVERBS The purpose of this handout is to help you work through the book of Proverbs in one month. This is a devotional that you can do one month per year or do every month. For millennia, the book of Proverbs has proved to be a fount of wisdom for God’s people. One does not have to have a seminary degree or many years of Biblical training to understand the book of Proverbs. For example, Proverbs 25: 17 says “Seldom set foot in your neighbor’s house, Lest he become weary of you and hate you.” Now where can you get that type of wise sage advice in the modern world? Proverbs is written by the wisest man that ever lived, Solomon. In 1 Kings 3: 13 God tells Solomon, “Behold, I give you a wise and discerning mind, so that none like you has been before you and none like you shall arise after you.” (ESV) If the wisest person ever known were to offer you free advice, would you at least listen to it? Here is someone who has tried and done nearly anything and everything possible (read Ecclesiastes). His insights not only represent God-given wisdom but are topped with the clarity that comes from living in a very real world. Instead of reading the latest self-help book why not read from wisdom that is God-given and has stood the test of time? When reading Proverbs remember that not all of the book contains short, concise statements. Proverbs 1:1-7 discusses the value of wisdom, and then chapters one through nine praise wisdom and talk about how to get it and live it. -

North Wales and Anglesey Part 1
North Wales and Anglesey Part 1 Snowdonia viewed from Plas Newydd, Anglesey, across the Menai Strait. Despite being a 'Jones', I know less about the 'land of my fathers' than I really should. It could well be the country's (deserved!) reputation for excessive rainfall that has kept me away in the past - such prejudice has denied me the delights of what is undoubtedly amongst of the most beautiful scenery in the UK. We hired a cottage for a week in the village of Abergwyngregyn, just off the A55 North Wales Expressway between Bangor and Conwy. The cottage has been beautifully restored, though alas for me that did not include raising the ceiling beams, with which my head frequently collided. Consequently the first three days of our stay were punctuated with some most 'un-Christian' language! Plas Newydd Our first excursion was the National Trust property of Plas Newydd in Anglesey, a beautiful country property set in extensive grounds on the Menai Strait not far from the road bridge to the mainland. It is the country seat of the 7th Marquess of Anglesey, whose family still retain rooms at the property. The first Marquess (then Lord Uxbridge) distinguished himself at Waterloo, where he led the charge of the heavy cavalry against d'Erlon's column. He was hit by one of the last cannon shots of the day. According to anecdote, he was close to Wellington when his leg was hit, and exclaimed, "By God, sir, I've lost my leg!" — to which Wellington replied, "By God, sir, so you have!" The remains of his leg were later amputated. -

FINAL DRAFT – FOR CITY COUNCIL APPROVAL City of Palm Springs Citywide Historic Context Statement & Survey Findings HISTORIC RESOURCES GROUP 49 CONTEXT: PALM SPRINGS BETWEEN THE WARS (1919-1941) Overview This context explores the transformation of Palm Springs from a modest spa town into a luxury winter resort in the years between the First and Second World Wars. By 1918 Nellie Coffman and her sons, George Roberson and Earl Coffman, understood the town’s potential, not as a health spa for asthmatics and consumptives, but as an exclusive winter resort for the well-to-do, and set about transforming their sanatorium into the luxurious Desert Inn, one of the most renowned hostelries in the country. Their success inspired the development of two equally spectacular hotels in the 1920s and cemented the town’s growing reputation as one of the country’s premier luxury winter resorts. These were the Oasis Hotel (121 S. Palm Canyon Drive; HSPB-10), designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, Jr. (known as Lloyd Wright) and opened in 1925 by Pearl McCallum McManus;97 and the grand Hotel El Mirador (1150 N.
