I have many to thank for what they offered and provided for me to complete this venture. Any misunderstandings or errors are my own. First and foremost, I am grateful for the time and hospitality that the 53 study participants living in the greater Dayton, Ohio area gave to me. I greatly appreciate how forthcoming they were in sharing their personal experiences and views on the variety of topics we discussed during interviews. This dissertation would not be complete without their contributions and I hope I represent their perspectives clearly in it. For various reasons, my work on this dissertation occurred in various places over an extended period as I held full-time positions in undergraduate educational contexts. I am grateful to Dr. Chris Elisara, executive director of the Creation Care Study Program (CCSP), for providing a sabbatical in Spring 2008 to begin exploring options for my research while I oversaw CCSP’s South Pacific (SoPac) program in New Zealand. I also wish to thank Mark Pierson who served as interim program director in my absence, and Sara Barrett Maddocks, SoPac’s program administrator. Both made my sabbatical feasible and the program would not have continued that semester without them. I subsequently conducted interviews in Fall 2008 and made progress on dissertation research during summers while teaching sociology for several years. I am indebted greatly to several people at Houghton College in western New York for their support. The courses I participated in with them facilitated the emergence and development of my sociological imagination, while imparting to me an appreciation for the power, value, and relevance of sociological inquiry. Jones was instrumental in the development of my theoretical sensitivity to the nuances and complexity of environmental concern. He played a significant role in the development of my quantitative orientation and survey methodology techniques. I am grateful to Dr. Harry F. Dahms for his guidance into the depths of critical, social, and sociological theory. These experiences simultaneously were challenging and exhilarating, with the most enduring effects for me occurring at the intersection of alienation, public policy, and social problems in the context of modern society. Finally, I greatly appreciate the willingness of Dr. William Park (Agricultural and Resource Economics) to join this venture at such late notice. Thank you for your insights on the dissertation and our shared experiences working together on this topic in our everyday life contexts. Others played earlier important roles that deserve mention. As the original outside reader before moving to UC Irvine’s School of Ecology, Dave provided and mentored me through innumerable opportunities for developing my research capacities as I examined the human dimensions of social conflict and public support for meeting regional water supply needs. I continue to carry his generosity and kindness with me. In addition to the professional and scholarly communities supporting me, I could not have conducted this research and completed the dissertation without the support and sacrifices of my personal family. I am deeply grateful for the steadfast support of my parents, brothers, and sister-in-law. Although mostly too young to realize it yet, the moments and memories we shared through these years have sustained me in this effort. From my first inquiry to the UT Department of Sociology about its master’s program and her overwhelmingly encouraging response, she embodies the grace, steadfastness, and generosity I aspire to offer others. Routhe. v ABSTRACT Scholars identify an emerging religious social base to U.S. environmentalism and public concern about anthropogenic global climate change. Surveys also show religious and political conservatives express skepticism about this environmental problem and oppose environmental regulations addressing it. White conservative Protestants reflect this contrast by denying human activity causes it and opposing climate policy for mitigating anthropogenic effects on Earth’s atmosphere, while concern and activism for climate protection simultaneously increases among other environmental evangelical Christians. Decades of quantitative investigations reveal religion’s role in environmental concern remains murky. Little clarity

Recently, Perry v. Schwarzenegger, a challenge to California’s ban on same-sex marriage, and Gill v. Office of Personnel Management, a lawsuit challenging section three of the federal Defense of Marriage Act, have created divisive debate. Leading scholarship and commentary on the litigation of decisions like Perry and Gill have been strongly critical, predicting that it will produce a backlash that will undermine the same- sex marriage cause. These studies all rely on a particular historical account of past same-sex marriage decisions and their effect on political debate.

The origin of and continued demand for desegregation came from black Virginians who were challenging an oppressive racial caste system that greatly limited their freedom as American citizens. In the 1930's they b^gan demanding teacher salaries and school facilities equal to their white counter- parts. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People provided lawyers and organizational assistance as the school protests became a mass movement among black Virginians. In 1951, the protest became an attack on public school segre- gation itself. /V The Brown decision and the response to it split white opinion into three groups. A few white liberals publicly ac- cepted racial integration as good; extreme segregationists vehemently rejected any change in the racial caste system; a third group occupied the more complex middle or moderate posi- tion.

    SOCIAL CONSERVATIVES AND THE BOUNDARY OF POLITICS IN CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES by James Harold Farney A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Political Science University of Toronto © Copyright by James Harold Farney (2009) SOCIAL CONSERVATIVES AND THE BOUNDARY OF POLITICS IN CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES James Harold Farney Doctor of Philosophy Department of Political Science University of Toronto 2009 Abstract This dissertation investigates social conservative activism in the American Republican Party and in four parties of the Canadian right: the Progressive Conservative Party, Reform Party, Canadian Alliance Party, and Conservative Party of Canada. While issues like gay and lesbian rights and abortion became politically contentious in both countries during the late 1960s, American social conservatives emerged earlier than their Canadian counterparts and enjoyed considerably more success. Understanding this contrast explains an important part of the difference between Canadian and American politics and explicates a key aspect of modern conservatism in North America. The argument developed here focuses on different norms about the boundary of politics held in right-wing parties in the two countries. Norms are embedded components of institutions that codify the “logic of appropriateness” for actors within a given institution (March and Olsen 1989, 160) and both construct and regulate the identities of political actors (Katzentstein 1996). The recognition of norms has been an important development in organizational theory, but one that has never been applied to modern office-seeking parties (Ware 1996, Berman 1998). ii Qualitative case studies establish that many Republicans understood both sexuality and appeals to religion as politically legitimate throughout the period under investigation.

The good, the bad and the political in the discourse of the American Family Association Author: Madeleine Roghult Abstract This master’s thesis conducts a discourse analysis on a political organization within the New Christian Right (NCR), the American Family Association (AFA). The purpose of the study is to analyze the conditions of possibility for a politics that aims to prevent progress for LGBT rights and does so by analyzing the political terrain where operations of power produce particular and meaningful political practices. As analytical tools the study relies on a theory of the political by Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe, who together with Michel Foucault also provide an elaborate theory of power. Theoretical work by Wendy Brown provides insights into how politics can be expressed when social antagonisms are prevented from engaging in political contestation. Results of the discourse analysis trace social antagonisms in AFA discourse to a dislocation of the social where new articulatory practices have established new relationships between elements of discourse and thereby also changed the nature of social intelligibility and interaction. AFA discourse articulates family values based on the privileged signifiers of freedom, democracy and rights, which is utilized both for a separatist politics of discrimination and an inclusive politics of social assimilation. AFA discourse shows many points of antagonism and organize an enemy in postmodernism. Freedom as a mode of governmentality conditions the political demands that are and can be made which can be traced to a hegemonic neoliberal articulation.

"Do you folks on the mainland know what is going on here?" a friend from Hawaii asked. "They're going to legalize gay marriage…and it's coming your way," he announced. The friend was referring to a recent Hawaiian Supreme Court case that rejected a ban on same-sex unions as unconstitutional.1 As president of the Ohio Citizens for Community Values (CCV), Burress spent much of the 1990's battling the indecency he found in strip clubs, museums and adult bookstores. Upon hearing that homosexual marriage might drift from Pearl Harbor to the mainland, he decided to fight this "gay agenda." Fast-forward to 1996. Burress successfully organizes a Christian coalition, which crafts a plan against gay marriage. By September, they persuade Congress and President Bill Clinton to adopt their legislation dubbed, “The DOMA” (The Defense of Marriage Act). It defines marriage as “between one man and one woman”. Within four years, approximately thirty state legislatures follow suit.
