  • A Book Circle
A BOOK CIRCLE Compiled by J. L. Herrera With special thanks to Peter Jones, Penny Parrish, Anita Clarkson, Rose Brown, Marie-France Sagot, Liz Field, Dawn Gregory, Margaret Burkett, Ken Herrera and Santi Mariso Introduction This book began as an overflow of ideas from A Writer’s Calendar and it uses the same format though I’ve reduced the number of names. But as it grew I realised it was not so much the result of recording in reasonably readable form the bits and pieces I’d been saving, chaotically, in exercise-books for years but an excuse to explore areas in which I might not have dared to tread a few years ago. My mother once said she hated receiving criticism but that upon reflection it was always worth having. I agree. But it also means that where once I would have hesitated to criticise anyone, unless they’d been dead for many years, I now feel I have an equal right to weigh into contemporary questions and debates and my thoughts, even if timid rather than profound, have the advantage of coming from a source that is often ignored except in those brief snippets where someone with a camera or a microphone goes out into the street and asks people what they are reading (and if anyone should happen to push a microphone under my nose it would be just my luck to be reading something terribly dull like my bus timetable or last week’s Mercury—). So here are not only more little mouthfuls but also some op-ed style pieces on which to browse.

  • Italian Anarchists in London (1870-1914)
1 ITALIAN ANARCHISTS IN LONDON (1870-1914) Submitted for the Degree of PhD Pietro Dipaola Department of Politics Goldsmiths College University of London April 2004 2 Abstract This thesis is a study of the colony of Italian anarchists who found refuge in London in the years between the Paris Commune and the outbreak of the First World War. The first chapter is an introduction to the sources and to the main problems analysed. The second chapter reconstructs the settlement of the Italian anarchists in London and their relationship with the colony of Italian emigrants. Chapter three deals with the activities that the Italian anarchists organised in London, such as demonstrations, conferences, and meetings. It likewise examines the ideological differences that characterised the two main groups in which the anarchists were divided: organisationalists and anti-organisationalists. Italian authorities were extremely concerned about the danger represented by the anarchists. The fourth chapter of the thesis provides a detailed investigation of the surveillance of the anarchists that the Italian embassy and the Italian Minster of Interior organised in London by using spies and informers. At the same time, it describes the contradictory attitude held by British police forces toward political refugees. The following two chapters are dedicated to the analysis of the main instruments of propaganda used by the Italian anarchists: chapter five reviews the newspapers they published in those years, and chapter six reconstructs social and political activities that were organised in their clubs. Chapter seven examines the impact that the outbreak of First World Word had on the anarchist movement, particularly in dividing it between interventionists and anti- interventionists; a split that destroyed the network of international solidarity that had been hitherto the core of the experience of political exile.

  • Pirates, Anarchists, and Terrorists: Violence and the Boundaries of Sovereignt Authority
ABSTRACT Title of dissertation: PIRATES, ANARCHISTS, AND TERRORISTS: VIOLENCE AND THE BOUNDARIES OF SOVEREIGNT AUTHORITY Mark Alexander Shirk, Doctor of Philosophy, 2014 Dissertation direct by: Prof. Virginia Haufler Department of Government and Politics This study examines how states combat episodes of violence that pose an ontological threat to the state. Sovereignty is a bundle of practices that draw, maintain, and redraw boundaries around political authority, the state is the polity constructed by these boundaries. The boundaries can be physical such as a border between state or conceptual such as that between public and private. These boundaries create the ‘conceptual maps that state leaders use to make sense of the world. The threat posed by violent action is constructed by narratives. Revisionist narratives of violence, the focus of this study, are illegible to states using current conceptual maps and therefore cannot be defeated while they remain. States are forced to redraw the boundaries of sovereign authority in the course of combating these threats, resulting in a transformed state. In my three cases – golden age piracy in the 18 th century, anarchist ‘propagandists of the deed’ at the turn of the 20 th , and al Qaeda – I demonstrate that the state develops creative solutions to concrete crises. For instance, golden age pirates exploited a surfeit of ungoverned land and open markets in the early 18th century Atlantic to attack trade forcing colonial states to bring their Atlantic colonies into the domestic sphere and shift the sea into an open space. Similarly, the rise of the labor movement and the development fingerprint databases and the universal passport system were, in part, responses to the threat of anarchists propounding “propaganda of the deed” at the turn of the 20 th century.
