KEENE, Carolyn Harriet Stratemeyer Adams Geboren: 1892. Overleden: 1982 Zoals veel juniorenmysteries, is de Nancy Drew-serie bedacht en werd (althans in het begin) de plot geschetst door Edward Stratemeyer [> Franklin W. Dixon] van het Stratemeyer Concern. Zijn dochter, Harriet Stratemeyer Adams nam later de uitgeverij over en claimde lange tijd de schrijver te zijn van àlle Nancy Drew-verhalen vanaf 1930 tot 1982. Onderzoek bracht aan het licht dat dit niet het geval was. De Nancy-verhalen werden, evenals andere Stratemeyer-series, geschreven door een aantal voorheen anonieme professionele schrijvers, waarvan de belangrijkste Mildred A. Wirt Benson (zie onder) was tot het moment dat Harriet Adams in 1953 (vanaf nummer 30) inderdaad begon met het schrijven van nieuwe delen en ook de oude delen vanaf 1959 reviseerde. Opmerkelijk en uniek is de zorgvuldigheid waarmee geprobeerd werd alle sporen omtrent de ‘echte’ auteurs uit te wissen. Byzantijnse plotten en samenzweringen werden gesmeed om veranderde copyrights; dossiers van The Library of Congress verdwenen en niet bestaande overheidsambtenaren werden opgevoerd om de namen van de ware schrijvers uit de boeken te laten verdwijnen. Despite the rich vein of possibilities for study that tabletop and live-action role-playing games present, few scholars have dug deeply. The goal of this study is to start digging. Operating at the crossroads of art and entertainment, theatre and gaming, work and play, it seeks to add the live-action role-playing game, CTHULHU LIVES, to the discussion of performance studies. As an introduction, this study seeks to describe exactly what CTHULHU LIVES was and has become, and how its existence brought about the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society. Simply as a gaming group which grew into a creative organization that produces artifacts in multiple mediums, the Society is worthy of scholarship. Add its humble beginnings, casual style and non-corporate affiliation, and its recent turn to self- sustainability, and the Society becomes even more interesting. In interviews with the artists behind CTHULHU LIVES, and poring through the archives of their gaming experiences, the picture develops of the journey from a small group of friends to an organization with influences and products on an international scale. -

The third section outlines the development of a plan, including researching the community, coordinating with other agencies, sharing information about resources, determining whether resources meet needs, and annexing the plan to the state emergency operations plan. Also included are ideas for in-staff training and an assessment tool for assessing farmworker damage. The next section includes forms and instructions for evaluating service strengths and weaknesses. The last section lists names and addresses of contacts and resources for social workers, teachers, and others who work with migrant farmworkers. -

Quick, Timely Reads Reading in the Time of Coronavirus On the Waterfront The Hardy Boys: Bay Rat Literature By David Frew February 2021 Dr. David Frew, a prolific writer, author, and speaker, grew up on Erie's lower west side as a proud "Bay Rat," joining neighborhood kids playing and marauding along the west bayfront. He has written for years about his beloved Presque Isle and his adventures on the Great Lakes. In this series, the JES Scholar-in-Residence takes note of of life in and around the water. Here is the typical 1950s era Bay Rat bookshelf. Who says we weren’t intellectuals? During the early 1950s, one of my traditional Christmas gifts from Santa was a “Hardy Boys” book. I read them ravenously and had a large collection. Some were better than others, with personal favorites that I read over and over being the “Secret Tower Mystery” and the “Secret of the Old Mill.” By the time that I became interested in them, they were obviously dated, having been written in the late 1920s. But I was able to overlook the obviously stuffy and too-old references to things like “automobiles instead of cars,” and “trousers instead of pants.” I still have my collection, although it is packed away in boxes. One of the most positive aspects of my Hardy Boys reading habit was a discovery of the Erie Book Store on French Street and its basement used book department. I became a regular customer, visiting often to hunt for used Hardy Boys books. Sometimes, when I was unable to find one, I was drawn to other inexpensive offerings and often purchased them. -

George can be incredibly opinionated when it comes to music. She and Bess are my best friends, and they also happen to be cousins. But the two are as different as Beethoven and The Rolling Stones. I saw George in the rearview mirror, and I knew she was working hard to restrain herself. I was trying to keep the Once Upon a Thriller between my friends, but I was also being truthful—the song was catchy and fun. -
