KEENE, Carolyn Harriet Stratemeyer Adams Geboren: 1892. • Abstract MERRILL, ASHLEY CHRISTINE. the Evolution Of
Abstract MERRILL, ASHLEY CHRISTINE. The Evolution of Nancy Drew, Cultural Icon: Readers, Writers, and Fanfiction Authors. (Under the direction of Mary Helen Thuente.) Nancy Drew is widely recognized as an influential American cultural icon. In this paper I make a detailed examination of Nancy's initial characterization as girl sleuth in the first ten books of the Nancy Drew Mystery Stories, published in the 1930s. I spend another chapter examining the initial volumes of later Nancy Drew series books, specifically the 1960s rewritten texts, the 1980s-90s Nancy Drew Files series, and the contemporary Girl Detective series. My penultimate chapter discusses Nancy Drew as realized in fanfiction, or stories written by readers and fans. My emphasis is on explaining Nancy's appeal as a cultural icon and the ways fanfiction authors reinvent and appropriate that icon for their own purposes in stories. To this end I cite fanfic writers and readers' response to why they read and write Nancy Drew fanfiction, and I analyze the content and function of a sample of stories written by Nancy Drew fans. I conclude that Nancy's appeal and the basis of her status as cultural icon is due to her unique nature as a figure frozen in transition between adolescence and adulthood, along with her more conventionally admirable traits. Her Everygirl appearance when removed from that unique matrix makes her extremely adaptable to readers for their own purposes, both within the context of fanfiction and without. Drew Review: Nancy Drew: Girl Detective Super Mystery #1, Where’s Nancy? reviewed by Todd H. Latoski Page 17 “Sometimes it’s not easy having a friend like Nancy Drew.” This is what George thinks as she and Bess are waiting for their friend to meet them for lunch. Only Nancy doesn’t meet them – nor does she show up for her date with her boyfriend, Ned Nickerson! What has happened to Nancy Drew? And if she is gone, who is going to solve the mystery and find her? If you have ever wondered what it would be like to see George or Bess try and solve a mystery without the sleuthing skills of Nancy Drew, now’s your chance! June sees the publication of the very first Nancy Drew, Girl Detective Super Mystery – Where’s Nancy? Just like the regular Girl Detective series, it is written in the first-person narrative, only with an exciting new twist! Instead of Nancy narrating the story, readers get an opportunity for the first time to get into the heads of Nancy’s best friends, George Fayne and Bess Marvin! In alternating style like the new Hardy Boys: Undercover Brothers series, Where’s Nancy? begins with George narrating, while the next chapter allows Bess to tell the story, then back and forth with each alternating chapter. They relate to readers the story of how Nancy disappears, and how the two of them must draw on all the lessons they’ve learned from their friend to solve the mystery and find Nancy! Ned is along for the ride, as well as Nancy’s father and everyone’s favorite nemesis, Deirdre.

  • 75 Years of Mystery Unfolds, Part IV: Nancy Drew at the Movies ©2005 by Jennifer Fisher
75 Years of Mystery Unfolds, Part IV: Nancy Drew at the Movies ©2005 by Jennifer Fisher “Duped again!” Poor “Ted” Nickerson, always at the mercy of scheming Nancy Drew in the 1930s Warner Brothers Nancy Drew movies. Fans of the Nancy Drew mysteries may have felt “duped” as the movies were quite a departure from the Nancy Drew books upon which they were loosely based. B comedies at best, the four Nancy Drew movies, Nancy Drew...Detective, Nancy Drew, Reporter, Nancy Drew, Troubleshooter and Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase, were an amusing portrayal of the life and times of crime and detection in River Heights. The basic premise of each movie was that something mysterious happened and Nancy got involved. Nancy drug Ted into her sleuthing schemes–often bribing or manipulating him. Carson Drew told Nancy to stay out of it. Captain Tweedy did not take Nancy very seriously. Nancy and Ted got involved in a daring plot regardless of Carson’s orders to stay out of it, and they ended up getting caught. In the end, Carson Drew and the police rushed to Nancy and Ted’s rescue. Actress Bonita Granville’s Nancy Drew was a more ditzy heroine who used her feminine wiles to manipulate and scheme others into helping her solve mysteries. Usually it was Ted, played by Frankie Thomas, who ended up being Nancy’s partner in sleuthing. In Detective, Ted had to dress up as a nurse to help Nancy sneak into a sanitarium. Other ruses that Nancy talked Ted into included posing as a reporter and then pretending to be boxer One-Round Loogan in Reporter.

  • The Hardy Boys: Bay Rat Literature
Quick, Timely Reads Reading in the Time of Coronavirus On the Waterfront The Hardy Boys: Bay Rat Literature By David Frew February 2021 Dr. David Frew, a prolific writer, author, and speaker, grew up on Erie's lower west side as a proud "Bay Rat," joining neighborhood kids playing and marauding along the west bayfront. He has written for years about his beloved Presque Isle and his adventures on the Great Lakes. In this series, the JES Scholar-in-Residence takes note of of life in and around the water. Here is the typical 1950s era Bay Rat bookshelf. Who says we weren’t intellectuals? During the early 1950s, one of my traditional Christmas gifts from Santa was a “Hardy Boys” book. I read them ravenously and had a large collection. Some were better than others, with personal favorites that I read over and over being the “Secret Tower Mystery” and the “Secret of the Old Mill.” By the time that I became interested in them, they were obviously dated, having been written in the late 1920s. But I was able to overlook the obviously stuffy and too-old references to things like “automobiles instead of cars,” and “trousers instead of pants.” I still have my collection, although it is packed away in boxes. One of the most positive aspects of my Hardy Boys reading habit was a discovery of the Erie Book Store on French Street and its basement used book department. I became a regular customer, visiting often to hunt for used Hardy Boys books. Sometimes, when I was unable to find one, I was drawn to other inexpensive offerings and often purchased them.

  • 1 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION This Chapter Presents an Introduction
CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION This chapter presents an introduction consisting of background, Formulation of Problem, Research Objectives, Research Significance, and definition of key terms. 1.1 Background Detective fiction was begun in 1840 by Edgar Allan Poe who is later known as “the father” detective fiction, and continued by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle with his Sherlock Holmes as detective character in his novel in the end of the nineteenth century and it becomes famous in that age. Cawelti (1976: 89) argues that. “The classical or ratiocinative detective story was first clearly articulated by Edgar Allan Poe in the 1840’s, but it did not become a widely popular genre until the end of the nineteenth century. Its period of greatest popularity was initiated by the enormous success of Canon Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories, and it flourished in the first four decades of the twentieth century”. The popularity of detective fiction by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle with his Sherlock Holmes was continued when Agatha Christie created Hercules Poirot as detective in her novels and it was remarkable reward and also it was a golden age for detective fiction. In United States, the 80s the Hardy Boys novel was very popular and became one of the American reading options for teenagers. Until 2005 (the title 1 changed to The Hardy Boys: Undercover Brother), this series has reached more than 200 volumes. The uniqueness of this series is from the people who are behind the process. All The Hardy Boys series were written by many ghostwriters and published using pen names, Franklin W.

Hated it - Nancy Drew and the other regular characters wouldn't do that. In the older version, Nancy, Bess and George are in a great train wreck on the way to survey some land in Canada which Nancy has unrealistically won from a radio contest.
