  • UPSTATE ECHOES Is Arch Merrill's Ninth Book
UPSTATE EcnfJes by ARCH MERRILL UPSTATE ECHOES is Arch Merrill's ninth book. like the others that have won so many thousands of readers, it is a regional book. Only, as its title implies, it embraces a larger region. Besides many a tale of the Western New York countryside about which Storyteller Merrill has been writing for more than a decade, in his lively, distinctive style, this new book offers fascinating chapters about other Upstate regions, among them the North Country, the Niagara Frontier and the Southern Tier. Through its pages walk colorful figures of the Upstate past- the fair lady a North Coun try grandee won by the toss of a coin- the onetime King of Spain who held court in the backwoods- the fabulous Elbert Hubbard, "The Fro" of East Aurora- the missionary martyrs and a silver-tongued infidel, natives of the land of Finger Lakes, who made his tory in their time- the movie stars who once made Ithaca, far above Cayuga's waters, a little Hollywood- the daredevils who through the years in barrels and boats and on tight ropes have sought to conquer the "thunder water" of Niagara. The past comes to life again in stories of historic mansions, covered bridges, Indian council fires and the oldtime glory of Char lotte, Rochester's lake port that once was "The Coney Island of the West." You will meet such interesting people as the last surviving sextuplet in America and the "The Wonderful Man" who leaped from a parachute at the age of 81. • UPSTATE ECHOES Other Books by ARcH MERRILL A RIVER RAMBLE THE LAKES COUNTRY THE RIDGE THE TOWPATH ROCHESTER SKETCH BOOK STAGE COACH TOWNS TOMAHAWKS AND OLD LACE LAND OF THE SENECAS UPSTATE ECHOES BY ARCH MERRILL Being an Assemblage of Stories about Unusual People, Places and Events in the Upstate New York of Long Ago and of Only Yesterday Many af Them Appeared in Whole or in Part in the Rochester N.Y.

Martineau, who had died the previous year, had published numerous sketches of the recently dead for the Daily News between 1852 and 1863, many of which were collected in Biographical Sketches (1869).1 For Morley, these were “masterpieces in the style of the vignette. Their conciseness, their clearness in fact, their definiteness in judgment, and above all the rightly-graduated impression of the writer’s own personality in the background, make them perfect in their kind.”2 In reviewing Martineau’s work, Morley was himself writing a biographical sketch, a genre that was widespread in periodical literature by the middle of the nineteenth century. Accounts of recently dead editors and contributors ranged from obituaries and memoirs to reviews of books (especially biographies, memoirs, and autobiographies), but many were simply brief sketches of recent or earlier nineteenth century journalistic figures.

  • EHS NL February 2011
February 2011 Volume 1, Issue 3 Elham in the Snow There has certainly been an excellent opportunity during the beginning and end of 2010 to go out and snap a few pictures of our lovely village in the snow. Therefore the EHS Committee feel that it would be a good time for you to send us your own favourite photographs that you have taken. They need not be from 2010, in fact the older the better, so here are a few to get you thinking. Ideally we would prefer you to email them to us, making them no bigger than 5 MB in size – Thank You. Elham, March 1909 Elham, Dec 2010 Move to formally become the Elham Historical Society The members of the EHS committee cannot believe that twelve months have gone by since they “volunteered ” to help set up the Elham Historical Study and the sight of over 40 prospective members at the first public meeting in May 2010 was very encouraging. Since then we have gone from strength to strength and now have over 80 members, therefore your committee are keen to ensure the ongoing success of the group. From the outset it has always been the aim of the committee to seek to formally become a society and with the upcoming first birthday event in April of this year we feel that the time is right for that move. We have now drafted a constitution and have determined a small number of elected roles so that members can vote for their favoured candidate at the April meeting.

  • Little Journeys to the Homes of the Great--Index
Little Journeys to the Homes of the Great Elbert Hubbard In 1894, Elbert Hubbard began his series, Little Journeys to the Homes of the Great. Beginning in 1894, once a month, for 14 years, he wrote a new “little journey”. There are 180 “Little Journeys,” of those men and women who, “transformed the thought of their time, changed the course of the empire, and marked the destiny of civilization.” Hubbard’s work is considered a classic. Hubbard’s “little journeys”, sometimes compared to Plutarch’s Lives, are a bridge from Plutarch’s lives of Greeks and Romans to Edison’s time. Like Plutarch, Hubbard’s miniature biographies were composed for his own personal benefit and his information and inspiration came from original sources. These mini biographies were published in 1928 by Elbert Hubbard’s son, Bert Hubbard, using Elbert Hubbard’s own printing and bookmaking shop, Roycrofting, Incorporated. In May of 1915 Elbert Hubbard and his wife, Alice, left for Europe aboard the Lusitania. A German submarine sunk the Lusitania off the coast of Ireland; both Elbert and Alice died as a result. His son Bert took over the family businesses and shops, which were numerous at that time. Hubbard describes himself as an anarchist and a socialist, so some care should be taken with respect to some of these biographies. I believe in the sacredness of the human body, this transient dwelling place of a liv ing soul, and so I deem it the duty of every man and every woman to keep his or her body beautiful through right thinking and right living. I believe that the love of man for woman, for is and the love of woman man, holy ; and that this love in all of its promptings is as much an emanation of the Divine Spirit, as man s love for God, or the most daring hazards of human mind.

KENT ARCHAEOLOGICAL SOCIETY ON-LINE e-BOOK For the Good of This Town: The Jurats of Maidstone, 1549 -1660 Judy Buckley Photograph of 1640 memorial in All Saints Church by the Author Text 2009 ©Judy Buckley Foreword You shall True Faith bear to our Sovereign Lady, the Queen's Majesty that now is, Her Heirs and Successors, Kings and Queens of this realm. You shall have that regard and respect unto the Mayor that governeth this Town and Parish for the time being as is fit. And the lawful Franchises, Usages and Customs of the same Town and Parish, advance and maintain to the utmost of your power. And the same (as much as in you is) from unlawful grievance and damage shall keep. And as a Freeman of this Town and Parish, you shall bear yourself for the good of this Town, as it is fit and convenient. So help you God. Amen The freeman's oath, anciently administered in Maidstone. (Gilbert, Antiquities, 1865, p.126) This book is about the mayors and other jurats (aldermen) who led Maidstone from the granting of the first Borough Charter by Edward VI in 1549 until the end of the Commonwealth and the Restoration of Charles I in 1660. The period has been chosen to match Chapter III of The History of Maidstone (1995) by Peter Clark and Lynn Murfin. In that chapter they covered all aspects of Maidstone life, but this study will focus on the closely knit group of ninety seven men chosen by the common council - a traditional Tudor oligarchy - who influenced Maidstone during those years.

  • Esd Announces Restoration Project at Erie County Cultural and Arts Destination
Empire State Development News Press Office (716) 856-8111 www.nylovesbiz.com FOR RELEASE: IMMEDIATE 9/22/2008 ESD ANNOUNCES RESTORATION PROJECT AT ERIE COUNTY CULTURAL AND ARTS DESTINATION Roycroft Campus Corporation to Reconstruct Former Power House Empire State Development today announced plans for the Roycroft Campus Corporation (RCC) to reconstruct and restore the historic Power House at the East Aurora-based Arts and Crafts cultural campus. The Roycroft complex will retain 96 full-time positions and RCC pledges to create an additional 12 full-time jobs in Western New York. The Campus was home to a significant cultural movement that influenced the nation and became a destination for master craftsmen and a gathering place of notable artists, authors, philosophers and powerbrokers. “The historic Roycroft campus brings tourists and additional revenue to the region,” said Governor David A. Paterson. “The campus housed a cultural movement that inspired the nation and continues to influence craftsmanship and philosophy today. As tourism is one of New York State’s most important industries, I am pleased to support the continued restoration and programming at this designated National Historic Landmark.” Empire State Development will provide a $1.5 million capital grant toward the reconstruction and restoration project. For this undertaking to move forward, RCC must match the grant by raising $1.5 million, or half of the estimated $3 million cost. The matching contribution may be obtained through any potential sources of philanthropic, public and private funds. The RCC has already raised $500,000 towards the matching contribution. The RCC recently took ownership of the former Power House with the assistance of The Margaret L.
