Thierry Breton, the Internal Market Commissioner, held a videoconference with the heads of Europe’s telecommunications companies and the GSMA (Global System for Mobile Communications) to explore options for sharing geolocation metadata in order to map and forecast the spread of the virus. The Commission claims that such a move would be fully in line with the General Data Protection Regulation and e-privacy legislation. How does the Commission intend to guarantee EU citizens full anonymisation of their personal data? How exactly does the Commission envisage using such data? Local TV stations are already showing dozen-strong groups of refugees starting to cross the border with Greece on foot. Turkey’s decision would seem to have been triggered by the death of at least 33 Turkish soldiers in an aerial bombardment by Syrian government forces in the province of Idlib.
