Music Notes: Music Man was composed by Chris Mauro in memory of Lew Gulick, a great musician and wonderful friend. Chris writes, “His enthusiasm for jazz music was infectious and he was always up for a jam session on his vibes or the piano." Pi is another original composition by Chris that features live drums played against a recorded part consisting of 14 drums and percussion instruments. The recorded instruments include a bodhran, cymbals, gong, snare drum, finger cymbals, cowbell, tuned drums and wooden cricket. The structure of the piece features call and response drumming plus improvisation. Vatapi Ganapatim is a Sanskrit hymn in praise of Lord Ganesha, the god of new beginnings and remover of obstacles. Bantu Reethi is a Telugu hymn in praise of Lord Rama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, in which the composer seeks to be in Rama’s presence always as his guard and companion. Govardhan Giridhara is a Sanskrit hymn in praise of Lord Krishna, another incarnation of Lord Vishnu, one who “lifts Mount Govardhan, destroys people’s fears, fells demons, and loves to dance.” Grateful thanks to Arvind Venugopal, Cedar Lane member and multi-faceted percussionist Chris Mauro, Intern Minister Christin Green, Vina Etwaroo, and Lakshmi Swaminathan, for the amazing music and dance that enlivened today’s Spirit Experience!
