The White House High Street Southwick PO17 6EB Tel: 023 92377 568 Dear Friends I would like to add my congratulations, to the many others received from around the UK, to Eileen Jayne-Wood on being awarded the MBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours List, for her outstanding contribution to fundraising on behalf of The Rowans Hospice. Eileen has been a devoted supporter of The Rowans Hospice since it first opened and has raised over £200,000 since 1994. She chairs the Eileen-first from left Meon Valley Support Group, which includes: Boarhunt, Southwick, Wickham, Swanmore and Bishop’s Waltham. She is also the Founder and Travel Organiser of Portsdown Travel (formerly Hospice Travel). Ruth White, Chief Executive at The Rowans wrote, in her tribute, “From my first encounter with Eileen, I could sense her total commitment to the service we were developing: her enthusiasm and passion for Hospice Care was tangible. Over the last almost two decades, I and many others have looked on in awe at the professionalism she has brought to this voluntary role. The individualized care we strive to offer at The Rowans Hospice is mirrored in Eileen’s care of people who attend her fundraising events and Portsdown Travel holidays and tours. Travel is actually one of the lesser known therapies the hospice has to offer as many people who are bereaved and alone find the excursions and holidays welcoming and supportive in their journey through grief” Eileen’s award was a long time coming and well deserved. Another Southwick, long time residence and, like Eileen a regular attender at Southwick Church, Marjorie Copping, celebrated a special birthday with family and friends, just before Christmas when she reached the grand age of ninety. 1 I was surprised to receive a telephone call from Winchester City Council, in the New Year, asking, as the D-Day Memorial Hall was already booked, if Southwick Church could be used as a polling station, for a by-election. After receiving the Squire’s permission, I then started remembering other churches I have known that were used for other uses, as well as regular worship. In Hereford, the church council approved the setting up of a very successful vegetarian café at the back of the parish church; at nearby Mansell Lacy the church was used, as well as for services, by all of the village organisations for meetings including, the Brownies, Parish Council, After School Play Group, NFU, Yoga, a Scottish Dancing Club and other social events especially parties were held there. This church was literally, the centre of the village. A church in South Wales allowed the local doctor to use the vicar’s vestry as his surgery and the choir vestry as the waiting room. I also know of two churches, in London, who converted their crypts, one into a wine bar and the other into a recording studio. At Boarhunt Church, you can still see the imprint of a wall that divided the aisle from the community room. In many places throughout England churches, for many centuries, have been multi-use facilities including cathedrals, where markets were held in the side aisles and wide open spaces. I do not expect this to happen in the churches of Boarhunt and Southwick but I am pleased, that on this occasion, we were able to help out and allow the by-election to take place in our church. Best wishes Bob Green To view photographs of special services and other joint church activities, please visit our websites, www.stjamessouthwick.org.uk or www.stnicholasboarhunt.org.uk Marjorie cutting her 90th birthday cake (Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE)) 2 Sunday Services Southwick Boarhunt 0830 Holy Communion 0930 Parish Eucharist 1045 Parish Eucharist (The above, 1st, 3rd, and 5th only) 1000 Holy Communion, first Thursday in the month at Southwick 1830 Sunday Service at North Boarhunt Methodist Chapel Trampers Lane Parish Register Funerals 28th November Anthony Stroud Portchester 23rd December Doreen Walton Portchester Burial of Ashes 30th December Jean Pratt Boarhunt 24th January Doreen Walton (nee Ware) Boarhunt Special Events 18th March 0930 Mothering Sunday Service Boarhunt 18th March 1045 Mothering Sunday Service Southwick 5th April 1930 Eucharist for Last Supper Southwick 6th April 1400 Good Friday Service Southwick 8th April 0930 Easter Eucharist Boarhunt 8th April 1045 Easter Eucharist Southwick 3 Southwick & Widley Parish Council Clerk: Eddie Mason 19 Okemont Close, West End, Southampton SO18 3PP Telephone: 023 8046 3228 e-mail: [email protected] High on its list of priorities is the Parish Council’s continuing mission to achieve a satisfactory bus service for the village. A project it is working very hard to bring to a successful conclusion. The Parish Council has now been successful in soliciting support from Boarhunt Parish Council who have committed money in their next financial year’s budget. Wickham and Soberton PCs are still to decide. The Parish Council is aware that this is going to be a long slow process but with all the offers of support it has received it is confident of a successful outcome. At the December meeting the white signs put up at great expense by Hampshire County Council to advertise where wild flowers grow were raised on behalf of the community by a member of the public. His concern was that this level of money should be spent on a project like this when the Council is under such tight financial constraints and is facing cutbacks that are threatening important front line services. The Chair of the Parish Council; Councillor Watson has looked into this and has received a reply from Hampshire County Council saying that its contractors had been inadvertently cutting through and destroying sites that had been designated as of ‘Special Scientific Interest’ and to stop this they had applied for a European Community grant and the signs came from the money allocated to it by the EU to stop SSI sites being destroyed in Hampshire. Councillor Watson said that he is in the process of re-convening the ‘Playing Field Working Party’ which he hoped would resume its work in February, and then a decision could be made about what needs to be done to improve the facility for the community. With regard to community safety PCSO’s Barry Towler and Owen Reeves said that although the police had had a very busy new year in general, as 4 far as Southwick was concerned it has been very quiet with only one minor motoring incident. Since the New Year other problems have been: i) The heavy wind has brought down four trees although none presented a danger to the public. ii) Speeding through Southwick is being treated as a priority and several motorists have been charged. iii) There have been some sporadic thefts of domestic diesel fuel. Other items from the meetings are that the Parish Council makes the following grants: Parish Magazine £100.00 Home Start £100.00 Citizens Advice Bureau £100.00 St Nicholas’s Church graveyard £500.00 Pat John’s Retirement Pat Johns worked for the Southwick Estate for 37 years. Contractors and staff showed their appreciation by presenting her with a gift of a sundial that they all thought she would appreciate in her retirement. 5 Present Billy Liar The Pantomime An original panto filled with original songs written especially for Spare Part Players, You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, but you won’t get your money back!!
