Recent studies have identified insect species in the family Nitidulidae that likely account for the majority of above-ground transmission during spring in several Midwestern states based on frequencies of fungus-contaminated beetles dispersing in oak stands and visiting fresh wounds. Other investigations have utilized quantitative and spatial data to predict root-graft spread in red oak stands. Although the disease is widely distributed in the regions, disease severity ranges from low to high among the regions and within states of the Midwestern region. Knowledge of spread frequencies and relationships between disease spread/severity and various physiographic factors is important in the development of tools for effective disease management. The disease is caused by the interaction of the aggressive bark beetle Pityophthorus juglandis Blackman and the canker-forming fungus, Geosmithia morbida M. Kolarik, E. Freeland, C. Utley & Tisserat, carried by the beetle. Other insects also colonize TCD-symptomatic trees and may also carry pathogens. A trap tree survey was conducted in Indiana and Missouri to characterize the assemblage of ambrosia beetles, bark beetles, and other weevils attracted to the main stems and crowns of stressed black walnut. More than 100 trees were girdled and treated with glyphosate (Riverdale Razor Pro, Burr Ridge, Illinois) at 27 locations. Nearly 17,000 insects were collected from logs harvested from girdled walnut trees. These insects represented 15 ambrosia beetle, four bark beetle, and seven other weevil species. The most abundant species included Xyleborinus saxeseni Ratzburg, Xylosandrus crassiusculus Motschulsky, Xylosandrus germanus Blandford, Xyleborus affinis Eichhoff, and Stenomimus pallidus Boheman. These species differed in their association with the stems or crowns of stressed trees. Multiple species of insects were collected from individual trees and likely colonized tissues near each other. Walnut Thousand Cankers Disease Alert Mary Ann Hansen1 and Elizabeth Bush1, Extension Plant Pathologists Eric Day1, Extension Entomologist Gary Griffin1, Forest Pathologist Norm Dart2, State Plant Pathologist 1Virginia Tech, 2Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services First occurrence of Thousand Cankers Disease of Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) in Virginia: On June 24th, 2011, the first case of thousand cankers disease of black walnut was found in two trees with severe epicormic branching on the lower trunk and advanced decline in Chesterfield County, Virginia. Presence of the vector and pathogen associated with this disease, the walnut twig beetle (Pityophthorus juglandis) and the fungus Geosmithia morbida, was confirmed in the samples. This is the first report of thousand cankers disease of black walnut in Virginia. The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) is conducting a delimiting survey to determine the extent of the infestation surrounding the positive find. Initial delimiting survey work has found additional trees with thousand cankers disease in Chesterfield and Henrico Counties. The first report of thousand cankers disease of black walnut east of the Mississippi River (http://news.tennesseeanytime.org/node/5684) was previously reported when the Tennessee Department of Agriculture announced the occurrence of the disease in black walnut trees in Knox County, Tennessee in August 2010. Although this lethal disease has been present in parts of the western U. Pest Alert Walnut Twig Beetle and Thousand Cankers Disease of Black Walnut For at least the past decade, an unusual decline of black walnut (Juglans nigra) has been observed in several western states. Initial symptoms involve a yellowing and thinning of the upper crown, which progresses to include death of progressively larger branches (Figure 1). During the final stages large areas of foliage may rapidly wilt. Trees often are killed within three years after initial symptoms are noted. Tree mortality is the result of attack by the walnut twig beetle (Pityophthorus juglandis) and subsequent canker development around beetle galleries caused by a fungal associate (Geosmithia sp.) of the beetle (Figure 2). Walnut Twig Beetle Distribution. The walnut twig beetle is native to North America and was originally described in 1928 based on specimens collected in the area of “Lone Mountain”, New Mexico (Grant County). In the 1992 catalog of Bark and Ambrosia Beetles by Wood and Bright the primary range of the insect was listed to include New Mexico, Arizona, and Chihuahua, Mexico (Figure 3). They can be identified using taxonomic keys. P. minutissimus is present in parts of Canada and the USA, and P. pruinosus is present in parts of the USA, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico. The main host plants of the two species are Quercus spp., but they also attack several other genera. The two species mostly colonise weakened or dead branches but can also attack the stems. They are mostly secondary pests but they vector the oak wilt fungus, Bretziella fagacearum, which causes heavy damage in American Quercus spp. populations. The fungus is mainly transmitted by the young adults during their maturation feeding on twigs, leaf petioles and young acorn stems. The beetles are polygamous and have two generations per year in most of their range. The main pathways are wood, bark, plants for planting, cut branches, chips and wood waste. These pathways are fully or partly regulated for the genera Quercus, Castanea and Prunus.
