  • Production Notes
PRODUCTION NOTES “This town – it’s all secrets. Everyone knows something you don’t” 1 The Town is a three-part contemporary drama from Big Talk Productions starring BAFTA winner Andrew Scott alongside an outstanding ensemble cast including Julia McKenzie, Charlotte Riley, Gerard Kearns, Kelly Adams and Martin Clunes. The first television series by Laurence Olivier award-winning playwright Mike Bartlett, The Town follows a shocking incident within an otherwise normal family. Mark Nicholas (Scott) returns to the town where he grew up to find his grandmother Betty (McKenzie) is now living in his childhood bedroom and he barely knows his teenage sister Jodie (Avigail Tlalim). Mark is drawn back into the life he left behind. Hardest of all is meeting his first love Alice (Riley), now married with a child. Thrust into the complicated lives of his former neighbours, it’s not surprising there are awkward moments as Mark becomes reacquainted with his past, including his old friends ‘down the pub’ Lucy (Kelly Adams), Carly (Aisling Bea) and Jeff (Sam Troughton). Running parallel with Mark’s story, we get to know the town Mayor, alcohol-soaked Len (Clunes). With his world falling in around him, Len is stumbling from one PR disaster to another. As we get to know the community, we’re also introduced to the enigmatic Inspector Franks (Douglas Hodge) from the local police force whose links to the family are stronger than it first appears... Mark struggles to decide whether he should stay permanently to be with his family. But a new life is difficult to build in the place you used to call home and now feels like you barely know it.

Monday 5 December at 21.30 Presented by British crime writer John Harvey, this film looks at the publishing phenomenon that is best-selling author Henning Mankell. Following Mankell as he divides his time between Sweden and the Mozambique capital of Maputo where he lives with his wife, the film looks at his work and his beliefs. Kurt Wallander is very different to traditional tough-guy cops. He responds to danger with stooped shoulders and an overwhelming sense that it‟s more than he can handle. But there is more to Mankell‟s work than police procedurals. Mankell explains how he‟s been writing to „unmask‟ society. He uses Wallander to express his views on all the traumatic topics which give rise to the New Right populism: the flow of illegal immigrants, soaring crime and violence, growing unemployment and social insecurity. Mankell sees himself as a man on a crusade to focus on © BBC those who remain in the shadows, on desperate lost existences, on the long and painful decay of the Swedish cradle to grave welfare state. Featuring a visit to Skane in southern Sweden – the home of the fictional character – this film talks to the most recent actor to play Wallander, Kenneth Branagh and includes interviews with American crime novelist Jeffrey Deaver and Swedish agitator Jan Guillou.

It’s bigger: It is a history course on The Beatles and their times, with an eye on the sweeping, panoramic history of the social, cultural and political transformations that occurred in the 1960s. In the 20th Century, no other band loomed as large as the four British lads from Liverpool. To call them “seminal” fails to do justice. They revolutionized music and the way people listen to it. To study The Beatles – their lives, songs, albums, films, how they’re remembered, and their impact on the world – offers a unique chance to explore the turbulent era of the Sixties, through a prism that is colourful, engaging and epic in scope.

In 1967 the Beatles were at the top of the world. John Lennon was at the bottom of his. OnLennon MASTERPIECE CONTEMPORARY Naked Sunday, November 21, 2010 at 9pm ET on PBS The fabled, turbulent career of John Lennon comes to life in a highly-praised performance by Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who), portraying the tormented superstar from the height of his Beatle fame to his romance with Yoko Ono and the breakup of the band, on Lennon Naked, airing on MASTERPIECE CONTEMPORARY, Sunday, November 21 at 9pm ET on PBS (check local listings). The 90-minute drama recreates key scenes in Lennon’s life from 1964 to 1971, with flashbacks to a turning point in his childhood when his separated parents forced him to choose between them. In a moment of indecision, he tragically got neither. During its UK broadcast, the Daily Telegraph applauded Lennon Naked as “the most ambitious Lennon drama to date,” extolling Eccleston for his “sheer brio” in channeling “a tragic anti-hero more complicated than Hamlet.” The Beatles’ hometown Liverpool Daily Echo praised the film as “frivolous, funny, passionate, and emotionally powerful—just like the man himself.” And the Sunday Express hailed Eccleston for his “convincing and nuanced performance of the late, great Beatle.” Commemorating the 30th anniversary of Lennon’s death, and the year that he would have turned 70, the film is followed on PBS by an American Masters special, LENNONYC, airing Monday, November 22 at 9pm ET. Taking John and Yoko to the eve of their self-imposed expatriation to New York in 1971, Lennon Naked costars Naoko Mori (Torchwood) as Yoko and Christopher Fairbank (Tess of the D’Urbervilles) as Freddie Lennon, John’s absentee dad, who abandoned his young son and then showed up 17 years later in a tabloid-inspired reunion that developed into a relationship—of sorts.

At odds with his family, friends, and fellow police, Wallander is in his element with serial killers and psychopaths, tracking them across the stark farm country of southern Sweden, which he does brilliantly in three new 90-minute cases that set the standard for steely-cold Scandinavian crime stories. Fast-paced, funny, and surreally true to the hero’s fantastic gifts for deduction, the series—co-created by Doctor Who’s Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss—was a massive hit when it aired this summer in the UK. • Writing About Imaginary Music (Is Really Like Dancing About Architecture) Autobiography, Mini-Theory, and Mini-Anthology of Uphonic Criticism by Gabriele Marino1
Musica Stampata – Issue 3 (June 2021) Writing about imaginary music (is really like dancing about architecture) Autobiography, mini-theory, and mini-anthology of uphonic criticism by Gabriele Marino1 Abstract Ever since its existence, music criticism has been cyclically accused of inadequacy (how can words capture the proverbial ineffability of sounds?), arbitrariness (what is the value of a judgment that seems so often indefensibly subjective?), uselessness (after all, what are the words of music critics if not false and parasitic?). If music criticism seems far-fetched and sterile, how should we judge the critical gesture exercised on music that does not even exist? It may seem strange, but in the course of music writing, some – critics, journalists, writers of “stuff about music” – have dedicated themselves to this paradoxical activity, with very different aims and styles. It is possible to write about records that do not exist, but about musicians that are quite real. Or to fantasise about music played and recorded by completely imaginary musicians. One may want to make fun of the music system (discography, stardom, fandom, the music press itself) or one may, instead, want to engage in a complicit game with whomever will read the – perhaps very plausible – review of that non- existent record. Writing about imaginary records is certainly a curious fact — Which allows us to illuminate, in a particularly effective way, the practice of writing about music in general. “It is as reasonable to represent one kind of imprisonment by another, as it is to represent anything that really exists by that which exists not.” – Daniel Defoe in the exergue of Albert Camus’ The Plague “Fake money is no more fake than real money.” – Dargen D’Amico “It suffices that a record be possible for it to exist.
