Abstract This dissertation examines nationalism, tradition and religiosity in Bollywood cinema, and the way that these themes are interpreted and used by young Canadians of South Asian origin, particularly Muslims, in the construction of identity. Bollywood, the most commercially successful form of Indian cinema, is distributed and viewed around the world. The popularity of Bollywood has been attributed to any number of factors, including its frequent use of fantastic, romantic and familial themes, but British and American studies suggest an additional appeal: the ability to acquire or strengthen understandings of cultural norms and rituals. Such findings raise the question of whether similar tendencies can be found among young adults of South Asian origin raised in Canada, especially Muslims. This line of investigation is especially interesting given the peripheral or stereotyped role of Muslims in many Bollywood films despite the presence of well-known Muslim actors, writers and producers in the industry. Accordingly, this study combines a discussion of Bollywood’s production and key themes with an examination of how these themes are read by young Canadians of South Asian origin. The latter is accomplished through a series of interviews with Canadians of South Asian origin between the ages of 19 and 29 in Toronto, Vancouver and Ottawa. Participants provided insights regarding their perceptions of national, ethnic and religious identity, chief influences that may have contributed to the formation of these, and their thoughts on the importance of Bollywood cinema within the context of nationalist sentiment and ethnic or religious identification. The results, analyzed using theories of diaspora, transnationalism, resistance and identity, are varied but key findings include the following: hybrid identities are being formed by these young people, and a strong sense Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. Further reproduction prohibited without permission. of Canadian national identity emerges within this, anchored by a belief that ethnicity and religion can be embraced freely within a pluralist Canadian environment. Media play a significant role in this process of identity construction, and in particular, Bollywood elicits a mixed reaction from participants. Despite its evident shortcomings in portraying religion, diaspora and gender, Bollywood appears to meet a need for representation of South Asian life that is otherwise unfulfilled. Despite starting out as a film production house of Mr. Subash Ghai in 1982, in FY16 its consolidated revenues were dominated by film exhibition CMP: Rs97 (50%) and education (31%). The film exhibition business was started in 2011. While players like PVR, Inox Leisure and Cinepolis cater to the mid to premium end customers Girish Pai in Tier-1 and Tier-2 cities, MAL is focused on providing affordable movie viewing in Tier-2 Head of Research and Tier-3 cities (as well as in Tier-1 cities selectively). What is less understood and explored is its escalating integration with audiences, markets and entertainment industries beyond the Indian subcontinent. This book explores the relationship of Bollywood to Australia. We believe that this increasingly important relationship is an outcome of the convergence between two remarkably dynamic entities—globalising Bollywood, on the one hand and Asianising Australia, on the other. If there is a third element in this relationship, which is equally important, it is the mediating power of the vibrant diasporic community of South Asians in Australia.     SHORTER COMMUNICATIONS VIDEO NIGHT IN NUKU‘ALOFA: DISJUNCTURE AND DIFFERENCE ON TONGAN SCREENS SARINA PEARSON The University of Auckland On June 27th 2004, “Bollywood” became “Pollywood” when a team made up almost entirely of Polynesian girls won an Indian dance competition held for Auckland secondary school students. Their performance drew not upon classical forms of Indian dance but reflected the popular tastes of the Indian diaspora living in New Zealand, including Fiji Indians, long established Kiwi Indians and more recent professional migrants. The Tangaroa College girls won the contest on the strength of a Bollywood-inspired number. While the win seemed to surprise and amuse Indian journalists, the appeal of Bollywood films among Pacific Island communities and in their island homelands has been a relatively open secret. Despite widespread popular recognition that many Pacific communities are avid Hindi cinema fans, a cursory review of regional journals confirms that its influence in the Pacific is a phenomenon that has attracted relatively little attention among scholars. This oversight might be partially accounted for in terms of how anthropologists working in the region have historically constructed Pacific communities as objects of study and islands as sites of research. These constructions have tended to privilege indigenous communities over non-indigenous communities. In accordance with established methods of ethnographic methodology anthropologists have typically focused intensively upon single or unitary sites for observation and participation. Additionally, transnational media pose particularly thorny and vexed methodological problems for anthropologists accustomed to less mobile, transitory and potentially idiosyncratic cultural formations. Marcus (1995) suggests that one response to these conceptual and methodological challenges has been for research about transnational cultural formations to progressively migrate out of disciplines such as anthropology into interdisciplinary (or as he suggests “anti-disciplinary”) fields such as media studies.
