Neotrance and the Psychedelic Festival GRAHAM ST JOHN UNIVERSITY OF REGINA, UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND Abstract !is article explores the religio-spiritual characteristics of psytrance (psychedelic trance), attending speci"cally to the characteristics of what I call neotrance apparent within the contemporary trance event, the countercultural inheritance of the “tribal” psytrance festival, and the dramatizing of participants’ “ultimate concerns” within the festival framework. An exploration of the psychedelic festival offers insights on ecstatic (self- transcendent), performative (self-expressive) and re!exive (conscious alternative) trajectories within psytrance music culture. I address this dynamic with reference to Portugal’s Boom Festival. Let us ask, instead, how things work at the level of on-going subjugation, at the level of those continuous and un- interrupted processes which subject our bodies, govern our gestures, dictate our behaviours etc … we must attempt to study the myriad of bodies which are constituted as peripheral subjects as a result of the effects of power" (Foucault, 1980: 97-98). Introduction Since Howard Becker's (1963) examination of the jazz musician as `outsider', various studies have addressed popular music in relation to its governance. Adapting Becker's `moral entrepreneurs', the Birmingham School traditions of `cultural criminology' sought to unravel the procedural nature of a sociology of deviance (eg. Pearson, 1983; Young, 1971; Cohen, 1972; Frith, 1983) and produced vital examinations of the state's engagement with sport, music and drug subcultures. Building upon the cultural studies tradition, Cloonan (1996), Grossberg (1992), Clarke (1982), Chevigny (1991), Kenney (1993) and Redhead (1990, 1993, 1995) have provided useful analyses of governmental strategies designed to censure, ban or modify music practices. The methodological foundation for such studies was provided by Stanley Cohen's study of mods and rockers clashes in 1960s seaside Britain and the judicial and administrative responses to youth violence, amplified through dramatic media coverage and editorial sermonising. Cohen's now familiar concept of moral panic, in which "a condition, episode, person or group of persons emerges to become defined as a threat to societal values and interests" (1972: 9) remains a valuable theoretical notion in the intersection of law and popular culture. -

The term ‘shock advertising’ specifically refers to advertising that attempts to penetrate through the clutter of all advertising by intentionally shocking, startling, or offending audiences via graphic, disturbing, explicit, provocative or offensive content for a wider societal or personal agenda. The term ‘reducing demand’ specifically refers to reductions in the desire or willingness to partake in a particular behaviour, which is measured by reported levels of that behaviour. And the term ‘drugs’ refers to anything ingested that produces a physiological change in the body – both legal and illegal. It is important to note however that the method of shock advertising is not reserved for deterring drug use e.g. fashion brands utilising borderline sexually explicit content to entice customers, government authorities televising re-enacted car accidents for road safety, organisations utilising violent images to raise awareness about domestic violence etc. When it comes to drugs, shock advertising has been used throughout the Western World for at least the past fifty years. The most prolific of these campaigns was ‘Just Say No’ (JSN), initiated by Nancy Reagan in the early 1980’s in the United States, crossing over to the UK and Australia in 1995 with the death of an eighteen-year-old English female Leah Betts, and fifteen-year-old Australian female Anna Wood. -

CHAPTER 10 Spiritual Technologies and Altering Consciousness in Contemporary Counterculture* Graham St John Introduction With a focus on virtual reality, techno-rave culture, and “psychedelic trance,” this chapter explores practices of consciousness alteration within contemporary countercultures. By contemporary, I mean the period from the 1960s to the present, with the chapter addressing the continuing leg- acy of earlier quests for consciousness expansion. Central to the discus- sion is the development and application of spiritual technologies (cyber, digital, and chemical) and the appeal of traditional cultures in the lifestyles of those sometimes referred to as “modern primitives.” I also pay attention to specific individuals, “techno-tribes,” cultural formations and events heir to and at the intersection of these developments, with special observations drawn from the Boom Festival—Portugal’s carnival of consciousness. Fur- thermore, the chapter considers the prevalence of DiY consciousness echoed in practices of modern shamanism. As the contiguity between altering consciousness and altering culture is explored, the chapter considers the psychological and political dimensions of that which has been variously held as “consciousness” among spokespersons and participants within visionary-, arts-, and techno-cultures. *Portions of this chapter are adapted from “Neotrance and the Psychedelic Festival” by Graham St John. These votes are the highest profile events in a series of developments related to drug policy that stand in direct contradiction of what historically has been referred to as the "one-way ratchet"2 : the idea that criminal law moves only in the direction of criminalizing more behavior and punishing what is already criminalized more severely.
