Hesiod (8th or 7th c. BC, composed in Greek) The Homeric epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey, are probably slightly earlier than Hesiod’s two surviving poems, the Works and Days and the Theogony. Yet in many ways Hesiod is the more important author for the study of Greek mythology. While Homer treats cer- tain aspects of the saga of the Trojan War, he makes no attempt at treating myth more generally. He often includes short digressions and tantalizes us with hints of a broader tra- dition, but much of this remains obscure. Hesiod, by contrast, sought in his Theogony to give a connected account of the creation of the universe. For the study of myth he is im- portant precisely because his is the oldest surviving attempt to treat systematically the mythical tradition from the first gods down to the great heroes. Also unlike the legendary Homer, Hesiod is for us an historical figure and a real per- sonality. His Works and Days contains a great deal of autobiographical information, in- cluding his birthplace (Ascra in Boiotia), where his father had come from (Cyme in Asia Minor), and the name of his brother (Perses), with whom he had a dispute that was the inspiration for composing the Works and Days. His exact date cannot be determined with precision, but there is general agreement that he lived in the 8th century or perhaps the early 7th century BC. His life, therefore, was approximately contemporaneous with the beginning of alphabetic writing in the Greek world. Although we do not know whether Hesiod himself employed this new invention in composing his poems, we can be certain that it was soon used to record and pass them on. -

The aim of this dissertation is to collect as much information as possible on agricultural practices in Macedonia from prehistory to Roman times and examine them within their social and cultural context. Chapter 1 will offer a general introduction to the aims and methodology of this thesis. This chapter will also provide information on the geography, climate and natural resources of ancient Macedonia from prehistoric times. We will them continue with a concise social and cultural history of Macedonia from prehistory to the Roman conquest. This is important in order to achieve a good understanding of all these social and cultural processes that are directly or indirectly related with the exploitation of land and agriculture in Macedonia through time. Introduction Macedonia, both the ancient historical Greek land and the modern geographical region known by that name, has been perhaps one of the most heavily discussed countries in the world. In the more than two centuries since the representatives of revolutionary France introduced into western insular and continental Greece the ideas and slogans that fostered nationalism, the ancient Greek country has been the subject of inquiry, and the object of myth-making, on the part of archaeologists, historians, ethnologists, political scientists, social anthropologists, geographers and anthropogeographers, journalists and politicians. The changing face of the ancient country and its modern sequel, as recorded in the testimonies and studies of those who have applied themselves to the subject, is the focus of this present work. Since the time, two centuries ago, when the world’s attention was first directed to it, the issue of the future of this ancient Greek land – the “Macedonian Question” as it was called – stirred the interest or attracted the involvement of scientists, journalists, diplomats and politicians, who moulded and remoulded its features. The periodical cri- ses in the Macedonian Question brought to the fore important researchers and generated weighty studies, which, however, with few exceptions, put forward aspects and charac- teristics of Macedonia that did not always correspond to the reality and that served a variety of expediencies. This militancy on the part of many of those who concerned themselves with the ancient country and its modern sequel was, of course, inevitable, given that all or part of that land was claimed by other peoples of south-eastern Europe as well as the Greeks. -

It is one of the longest (25 pages) and unique Macedonian folktales. HISTORY OF THE NAME “MACEDONIA” It is generally accepted today that the ethnic name MuxEftmv, from which by adding the ending -ux the geographical term MuxeSovux was formed, derives from the ancient Greek adjective (xuxEftvo;. The latter was formed by the stem of the noun [xàxo;=pfjxo;, with the suffix -ft-1 and the ending -vôç : puxE-ft-vôç, and already occurs in Homer (Odys. t) 106) old te <pôÀ/ux urxxeftvtj; ulyEipoio. The name Mxxxeôcov, plural Muxeôôveç, belongs to the ethnic names denoting a physical characteristic, like the ancient MuxooxÉxpcdoi (long-heads), Iluypuloi (Pygmies=fist-sized) and the teutonic Langobardi (long-beards), Chauci (tall), Quadi (ugly, bad) \ The Macedonians probably distinguished themselves amid the other Greek tribes by their height, as it often happens to highland tribes compared to tribes of the plains. National Myths in Interdependence: The Narratives of the Ancient Past among Macedonians and Albanians in the Republic of Macedonia after 1991 By Matvey Lomonosov Submitted to Central European University Nationalism Studies Program In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts CEU eTD Collection Advisor: Professor Maria Kovács Budapest, Hungary 2012 Abstract The scholarship on national mythology primarily focuses on the construction of historical narratives within separate “nations,” and oftentimes presents the particular national ist elites as single authors and undisputable controllers of mythological versions of the past. However, the authorship and authority of the dominant national ist elites in designing particular narratives of the communal history is limited. The national past, at least in non- totalitarian societies, is widely negotiated, and its interpretation is always heteroglot . The particular narratives that come out of the dominant elites’ “think-tanks” get into a polyphonic discursive milieu discussing the past. Thus they become addressed to alternative narratives, agree with them, deny them or reinterpret them. The existence of those “other” narratives as well as the others’ authorship constitutes a specific factor in shaping mythopoeic activities of dominant political and intellectual national elites. Then, achieving personal or “national” goals by nationalists usually means doing so at the expense or in relations to the others. If in this confrontation the rivals use historical myths, the evolution of the later will depend on mutual responses. Thus national historical myths are constructed in dialogue, contain voices of the others, and have “other” “authors” from within and from without the nation in addition to “own” dominant national ist elite. -
Fyrom - a Country with a Borrowed
FYROM - A COUNTRY WITH A BORROWED IDENTITY George C. Papavizas A dispute is going on between Greece and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) on the name "Macedonia," which FYROM is using since 1991 when it broke away from the crumbling state of Yugoslavia. The dispute goes deeper than the use of the name. It is an attempt by FYROM to discredit the ancient Macedonians’ ethnicity, break the connection between present-day Greek Macedonians and the Macedonians of antiquity, and establish a connection between FYROM’s Slavs and Albanians with ancient Macedonia. The historically, linguistically and archaeologically incorrect challenge is that Macedonia was never part of Greece and the Macedonians were barbarians who spoke a language incomprehensible to the other Greeks. It is true that ancient Macedonia was not part of Greece before 338 B.C. It is also true that Athens, Sparta, Corinth, Molossia, Epirus, Aetolia, Akarnania and all the other city-states did not belong to Greece because Greece did not exist as a single, united state. The Hellenic nation before the battle of Chaeronia (338 B.C) existed as hundreds of Hellenic tribes, subtribes and families speaking more than 200 dialects of the Greek language (Templar 2003). King Philip II, a leading statesman in the Greek world, was the first who attempted, by conquest or alliances, to unite the Greek city-states into a single country, Greece. Philip organized the "Greek Community" (to koinon ton Ellenon) in which the Greek states were bound by oath to keep peace among themselves. While ostensibly a treatment of Roman towns in Macedonia, it incorporates considerable information about pre-Roman periods at many sites, and includes exhaustive and valuable notes on the ancient sources and modern scholarship. Although now largely supplanted by Papazoglou on the treatment of individual sites and the road system, Hammond (1972) presents a comprehensive overview of the historical geography and topography of Macedonia. For Chalcidice, Zahrnt’s (1971) study emphasizes pre-Roman periods. TIR Philippi, covering those parts of Thrace lying within modern Greece, is generally accurate and has comprehensive bibliographies. Isaac (1986) is a useful survey with references to the ancient sources and modern scholarship. Since the 1920s much of Thrace, especially the Chersonese, has been a military zone, with the result that archaeological survey and excavation have been severely restricted. TIR Naissus provides information about hundreds of Roman sites within the modern state of Macedonia; for areas within Greece today, however, it is less reliable. References to south Slavic scholarly investigations more recent than those listed by it can be found in MAA and ArchIug. On the Greek side, two annual publications cover continuing archaeological work in the region: the summaries of recent work cited in BCH, and the archaeologists’ own reports in AEMT. RE remains a comprehensive guide to the ancient evidence for toponyms. The ancient courses of the principal rivers flowing into the central Macedonian plain are largely conjectural because over the centuries they have frequently shifted in this highly alluviated region. -

Gutzwiller, Ph.D. 1 Abstract This dissertation offers a new analysis of the treatment of poets and poetics in Greek literary epigram from the early Hellenistic Period (3rd century BCE) down to the early Roman Imperial Period (1st century CE). In their authorial self-representations (the poetic ego or literary persona), their representation of other poets, and their thematization of poetry more generally, literary epigrammatists define, and successively redefine, the genre of epigram itself against the background of the literary tradition. This process of generic self-definition begins with the earliest literary epigrammatists’ fusion of inscriptional epigram with elements drawn from other genres, sympotic and erotic poetry and heroic epic, and their exploitation of the formal and conceptual repertoire of epigram to thematize poetic discourse. With the consolidation of the epigrammatic tradition in the 2nd and 1st centuries BCE, the distinctively epigrammatic poetic discourse that had evolved in the 3rd century BCE was subsumed into the persona of the poet himself, who is now figured as the very embodiment of the epigrammatic tradition and genre. In the first century BCE, as epigram was transplanted from Greece to the new cultural context of Roman Italy, the figure of the epigrammatist served to articulate the place of both poetry and the poet in this new world.
