Trade and Political Fragmentation on the Silk Roads: The Economic and Cultural Effects of Historical Exchange between China and the Muslim East Lisa Blaydes∗ Christopher Paiky February 2019 Abstract The Silk Roads stretched across Eurasia to connect East and West for centuries. At its height, the network of trade routes enabled merchants to travel from China to the Mediterranean Sea, carrying with them high-value commercial goods. Alongside inter- regional trade came political, economic and cultural exchange that were crucial for urban growth and prosperity. In this paper, we examine the extent to which urban centers thrived or withered as a function of political shocks to trade routes, particularly the fragmentation of state and imperial control along natural travel paths across Eurasia. In doing so, we challenge a Eurocentric approach to world history through an examination of exchange between the two most developed regions during the medieval and early modern periods, China and the Muslim East. 109 The Geopolitics on the Silk Road: Resurveying the Relationship of the Western Türks with Byzantium through Their Diplomatic Communications Li Qiang, Stefanos Kordosis* The geopolitics pertaining to the Silk Road network in the period from the 6th to the 7th cen- tury (the final, albeit important, period of Late Antiquity) was intertwined with highly strate- gic dimensions.1 The frequent arrival of hoards of nomadic peoples from inner Eurasia at the borders of the existing sedentary empires and their encounters and interactions formed the complicated political ecology of the period. These empires attempted to take advantage of the newly shaped situation arising after such great movements strategically, each in their own interest. How did they achieve their goals and what problems were they confronted with? In this paper, I will focus on the relations the Western Türks had with Byzantium and use it as an example in order to resurvey these complicated geopolitics. In the first part, attention will be given to the collection of Byzantine literature concerning the Western Türks. Then, on the basis of the sources, the four main exchanges of delegations between the Western Türks and Byzantium will be discussed, in which the important status of the 563 embassy – as it was the first Türk delegation sent to Byzantium – will be emphasized. The possible motives behind the dispatch of the delegations and the repercussions they had will be presented. Finally, through reviewing the diplomatic communication between the Western Türks and Byzantium, attention will be turned to the general picture of geopolitics along the Silk Road, claiming that the great empire of the West – similar to today’s superpowers – by means of their resources (mainly diplomacy) manipulated the geopolitics on the Silk Road, especially the nomadic people pursuing their own survival and interests, who were only treated as piec- es on a chessboard for keeping the balance with the rest of the superpowers. -

Reinvention: an International Journal of Undergraduate Research 13:1 (2020) The New Silk Roads Peter Frankopan (2018), The New Silk Roads, London: Bloomsbury Publishing, 253pp ISBN: 9781526607423 (hardback) Katja Laug, The University of Warwick, Coventry Peter Frankopan follows his 2015 Bloomsbury publication The Silk Roads: A New History of the World with an illuminating account of the present and projected future of global economic and power structures that shifts the centre of attention away from the Western-centric narrative and towards the East and the re-emergence of economic power structures, particularly in Asia. The New Silk Roads sets out to demonstrate that 'the decisions being made in today's world that really matter are not being made in Paris, London, Berlin or Rome (…) but in Beijing and Moscow, in Tehran and Riyadh, in Delhi and Islamabad, in Kabul and in Taliban-controlled areas of Afghanistan, in Ankara, Damascus and Jerusalem' (p. 7). What follows Frankopan's declaration is an insightful and wide-ranging analysis of global power structures and economics that is decidedly missing from mainstream Western discourses and media landscapes. The book traces the rising power in the East as a consequence of the 'demands and needs for resources, goods, services and skills' in the developed economies of the Global North, which has led to a 'crisis of confidence' in Europe and the US. Yet, Frankopan argues, the 'sun rising in the east does not mean that it is setting on the west. Not yet, at least' (p. 43). Frankopan traces how Europe appears unable to cope with tensions arising from migration and the arrival of displaced peoples from Africa and the Middle East, from member states' inherent inability to see eye to eye, from Britain's tendency to sentimentalise the Empire, and from a lack of coherent strategies for international cooperation and to secure a place at the future tables of power. -

Commercial activities can be increased in parallel to improvements in transportational infrastructure. The Silk Road functioned in this manner historically and played a paramount role in the development of international commerce. In this context it proved vital in the execution of intensive commercial activities, initially between Asia and Europe, and later in Africa. Although the Historic Silk Road lost its significance in the late 17th century, it is currently being revitalised. In this context economic and political collaboration between nations is sought through a variety of initiatives - the so-called New Silk Roads. Major among such initiatives are oil-natural gas pipeline projects (OPP-NGPP), Transport Corridor Europe Caucasus Asia (TRACECA), the Northern Distribution Network (NSR-NDN), the Trans-Korean Railroad with the Trans-Siberian Railroad (TKR-TSR), and the Gulf-Asia Model: Turkey is actively involved in most of these. In this paper, brief information about such initiatives is offered and their de facto and potential effects on the foreign trade of Turkey revealed. Data show that such initiatives (excluding the TKR- TSR and the Gulf-Asian Model due to their distance) have positive effects on Turkey’s foreign trade. As part of the project, several expeditions were organized to retrace, by land and by sea, some of these routes, with the participation of experts from all the countries involved. The purpose of the project, which uses a multidisciplinary approach, was to carry out field studies of the scientific, technological and cultural exchanges which took place between the East and the West along these routes with a view to stimulating further research at the international and national levels and promoting the concept of multiple identities
