Propulsion Options for the Global Precipitation Measurement Core Satellite
PROPULSION OPTIONS FOR THE GLOBAL PRECIPITATION MEASUREMENT CORE SATELLITE Eric H. Cardiff*, Gary T. Davist, and David C. FoltaS NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Greenbelt, MD 2077 1 Abstract This study was conducted to evaluate several propulsion system options for the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) core satellite. Orbital simulations showed clear benefits for the scientific data to be obtained at a constant orbital altitude rather than with a decayheboost approach. An orbital analysis estimated the drag force on the satellite will be 1 to 12 mN during the five-year mission. Four electric propulsion systems were identified that are able to compensate for these drag forces and maintain a circular orbit. The four systems were the UK-lO/TS and the NASA 8 cm ion engines, and the ESA RMT and RITlO EVO radio-frequency ion engines. The mass, cost, and power requirements were examined for these four systems. The systems were also evaluated for the transfer time from the initial orbit of 400 x 650 km altitude orbit to a circular 400 km orbit. The transfer times were excessive, and as a consequence a “dual” system concept (with a hydrazine monopropellant system for the orbit transfer and electric propulsion for drag compensation) was examined. Clear mass benefits were obtained with the “dual” system, but cost remains an issue because of the larger power system required for the electric propulsion system. Electric propulsion system scaling for asteroid capture-and-return missions Justin M. Little⇤ and Edgar Y. Choueiri† Electric Propulsion and Plasma Dynamics Laboratory, Princeton University, Princeton, NJ, 08544 The requirements for an electric propulsion system needed to maximize the return mass of asteroid capture-and-return (ACR) missions are investigated in detail. An analytical model is presented for the mission time and mass balance of an ACR mission based on the propellant requirements of each mission phase. Edelbaum’s approximation is used for the Earth-escape phase. The asteroid rendezvous and return phases of the mission are modeled as a low-thrust optimal control problem with a lunar assist. The numerical solution to this problem is used to derive scaling laws for the propellant requirements based on the maneuver time, asteroid orbit, and propulsion system parameters. Constraining the rendezvous and return phases by the synodic period of the target asteroid, a semi- empirical equation is obtained for the optimum specific impulse and power supply. It was found analytically that the optimum power supply is one such that the mass of the propulsion system and power supply are approximately equal to the total mass of propellant used during the entire mission. Finally, it is shown that ACR missions, in general, are optimized using propulsion systems capable of processing 100 kW – 1 MW of power with specific impulses in the range 5,000 – 10,000 s, and have the potential to return asteroids on the order of 103 104 tons. − Nomenclature -

The framework was written in the Python programming language and incorporates many sub- disciplines to generate vehicle designs, model the relevant physics, and analyze flight perfor- mance. The relative performance (payload fraction capability) of different vehicle masses and feed system/propellant configurations was found. The major findings include conceptually viable pressure-fed and electric pump-fed two-stage-to-orbit configurations taking advan- tage of relatively low combustion pressures in increasing overall performance. -

Task 1 campares the Mars mission opportunities in 1981, 1983184, 1986, 1988, and 1990 to detennine which mission modes are possible and appropriate for each. Task 2 mines the design features of the hardware systems used to return the saaple, in the Mars orbit rendezvous mode, to identify ways in which the probability of back contamination can be minimized. Task 3 loolcs into the hardware and performance trade offs between the options of direct entry of the returning sample capsule at Earth and the orbital capture of that capsule for recovery by the Shuttle. Task 4 explores the possibilities for increasing the landed weight at Mars, beyond that possible with zfnimally modified Viking lander, to support HSSR missi-n modes involvk-g heavier systems. MS&E 315 and CME 304 Solar sailing between Earth and Mars 1 Overview In this project, you will use your knowledge of nonlinear optimization to help a space agency design a cargo mission. The mission consists of making a cargo spacecraft perform interplanetary orbit transfers between Earth and Mars, and the agency is considering using a solar sail to propel the spacecraft. They need you to determine how the spacecraft should be operated to perform these orbit transfers in the shortest possible time for different solar sail technologies. 2 Mission information 2.1 Simplifications The agency has determined that the following simplifications are acceptable for your analysis: 1. Orbits are heliocentric, circular and co-planar. 2. Gravitational effects due to celestial bodies other than the Sun are ignored. 3. The Sun and spacecraft are modeled as point masses. 4. The Sun has spherically symmetric gravitational and radiation fields. 2.2 Problem description The problem you have to solve consists of determining how the solar sail of the spacecraft should be oriented to make the spacecraft perform each of the interplanetary orbit transfers Earth-Mars and Mars-Earth in the shortest possible time. You have to perform this analysis for some, say three, of the available solar sail technologies so that the agency can choose the most appropriate one in terms of cost and performance. Each solar sail technology is identified by a characteristic acceleration, as described in the next subsection. Figure1 shows a diagram of the orbits of interest, where rE and !E denote the radius and angular velocity, respectively, of Earth's orbit around the Sun, and rM and !M denote the radius and angular velocity, respectively, of Mars's orbit around the Sun. -

Ionization within a Plasma for the Purpose Investigating Space Propulsion and the Vasimr Plasma Rocket Engine A project present to The Faculty of the Department of Aerospace Engineering San Jose State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering By Jeffrey Meadows May, 2016 approved by Dr. Marcus Murbach Faculty Advisor Abstract This paper investigates 2 key methods of ionization; Electron bombardment and RF bombardment, for plasma production in space as it relates to propulsion applications. The Paschen curve for air was measured experimentally and a 2mm wide region of <10% error was measured from those results. Ionization costs of between 8,000 and 15,000 electron Volts were calculated within the 2mm gap region. From these results, it was determined that electron bombardment could not provide efficient ionization for thrusting applications above 0.1 Newtons. From previously published data the ratio of ionization potential to atomic mass was a determined to be a key design parameter limiting propellant selection to the noble gases. The elements specifically investigated were Argon, Xenon & Krypton. More importance was placed on investigating Argon owing to the abundance of previously published data. Furthermore, a novel solution was proposed relying on published data and experimental investigation, to fill the design space between VASIMR and ion/hall thrusters. The theoretical results of this solution are a thrust of 0.6 N operating on 25 kW of power at total efficiency of just 10%. A future experiment was proposed for investigating RF bombardment ionization efficiencies of the 3 elements to better estimate their ionization efficiencies within the Helicon antenna to improve this 10% total efficiency. -

The amount of objects orbiting the Earth poses a threat to safe operations in space. Studies have shown that in order to have a sustainable environment in low Earth orbit, commonly adopted mitigation guidelines should be followed (the Inter-Agency Space Debris Coordination Committee has proposed a set of debris mitigation guidelines and these have since been endorsed by the United Nations) as well as Active Debris Removal (ADR). HybridSail is a proposed concept for a scalable de-orbiting spacecraft that makes use of a deployable drag sail membrane and deployable electrostatic tethers to accelerate orbital decay. The HybridSail concept consists of deployable sail and tethers, stowed into a nano-satellite package. The nano- satellite, deployed from a mothership or from a launch vehicle will home in towards the selected piece of space debris using a small thruster-propulsion firing and magnetic attitude control system to dock on the debris.
