Well Log Printer Users Guide

iPF510 Well Log Printer Users Guide Install your iPF510 well log printer following the instructions included with the printer. The control panel will display each step of the installation and setup process.

Next, install the Canon iPF510 drivers on your workstation. These drivers are located on the disk included with the printer. Should the installation disks be lost or misplaced you can download the drivers on the Canon USA website.

http://usa.canon.com/cusa/support/professional/professional_printers/imageprograf_series/imageprogra f_ipf510#DriversAndSoftware

After you have completed the installation process the next step is to update the iPF510 firmware to version 1.37. If the printer has firmware version 1.4x or higher you must use the Lprinter tool (software located in the Canon eSupport website, search downloads) to downgrade the firmware to 1.37

If it has 1.36 or lower utilize the firmware tool included with the 1.37 firmware.

Before you start printing you will need to Enable the Roll Feed Unit and set the Printer Default settings.

1. To enable the Roll Feed Unit: 2. Go to Printers and Faxes or Devices and Printers (depending on your ). 3. Select the iPF510 Printer Properties. 4. Click on the Device Settings tab and check the Roll Feed Unit box. 5. Click Apply then OK. 6. Return to iPF510 Printer Properties and click on Preferences. 7. The Canon iPF 510 Printer Driver will be displayed.

Printer Defaults These printer default settings are intended for the printing of paginated log files. The page size does not need to match the paper width and fold. For example: if you are printing to 8.5” wide log paper with a 6.25” fold the paginated log can be set to 8.5” X 11”. Page size will not affect the printing.

If you commonly print more than one log size, you may install a 2nd iPF510 driver, rename the printer to avoid confusion, then set a 2nd set of defaults. Set your default printer to the most common size then simply select the alternate printer driver from the drop down menu when you need to print your other size(s).

You may also simply make any necessary changes to the printer driver before printing. After printing, the printer will return to the default settings.

Special Settings If your file pagination process creates pages with the image justified left, it will be necessary to add ¼” to the page width. Set page size to 8.75 x … the image will center and print properly.

Loading Fanfold Paper Insert an empty roll paper core or roll of paper onto the roll holder. The width of the core/roll should match the width of your log paper.

Installing a Non-Skid carpet pad around the core will help move the fan fold paper over the roll holder.

Place your box of fanfold paper directly behind and below the roll feed holder. Pull the paper up and over the roll feed holder. Insert the leading edge of paper into the PAPER FEED SLOT and feed it manually until you hear the printer engage.

Removing the ROLL FEED UNIT COVER will make this process easier. It will also allow for better paper feeding.

Advance, Separate & Reset After the log has been printed and you have set "Automatic Cutting: to NO you can advance the paper, separate the printed log at the proper fold then reset the paper.

1. Press the Online button 2. Open the Top Cover 3. Engage the Safety Switch 4. Press ▼ to feed the paper far enough to separate the log at the proper fold. 5. Press ▲ to retract the paper manually until the lead edge of the paper is set properly. 6. If you hold down ▲ or ▼ for more than a second, the paper will move until you release the button. 7. If you hold down ▲ or ▼ for less than a second, the roll paper will move about 1 mm.

Features and functionality

SDI Office APS is an efficient, and unified graphics application to augment your graphics workflow. Key features include the ability to View, Convert, Export and Print numerous Vector and Raster file types and to generate PowerPoint presentation slides from any input format and to create Movie sequences from multi-page documents. Overview:

File types supported by SDI Office include: BMP, CALS, CGM, CGM+, CGM*PIP, CGMz, DWG, DXF, EMF, GIF, HPGL, ICO, JPEG, , PDF, PDS, PNG, PPT, PS, TIFF and . Movie sequences may be exported as AVI, FLV, MP4, MPG, MOV or WMV. Support is provided for all major G&G, Petrophysical, Wireline and CAD applications. SDI Office enables you to export as CGM, EMF, DWG, DXF, PDF, PS, SVG, BMP, JPEG, PNG and TIFF files and PowerPoint® (PPT) slides or, to the Windows Clipboard and to create and to print to a wide range of small and large format printers and plotters with the standard Windows print drivers or, via the optional Advanced Printing System (APS) for more reliable printing without the shortcomings of the Windows drivers. Vector data are maintained throughout the viewing and conversion processes for full scalability and highest quality output. The entire display or a selected portion may be exported to a wide selection of Vector and Raster formats. PPT slides may be exported as either raster or vector to optimize file size with respect to data content. Efficient use of resources provides high performance and minimizes CPU, Memory and I/O read-writes with reduced impact on concurrent applications. FlexLM license borrow feature permits temporary work off-line.

Functionality:

Viewing

Any of the supported input formats can be rapidly viewed, zoomed and panned to show high resolution detail. Multi-page files, including CGM and PDF, can be viewed as individual pages or concatenated to form a single continuous page for gapless navigation and printing (e.g. Well logs) or, overlaid as multiple layers (Maps and CAD files). PDS files are viewed more rapidly than Schlumberger’s PDSView and, as with other file types, can be printed and exported in a wide range of formats. An Overview window provides quick and easy navigation of large files and a magnifying glass aids viewing of small text and detail without zooming.

Export Options:

Multi-picture and multi-page file can be exported as a Movie, a ® PowerPoint file, a multi-picture CGM or a multi-page Adobe® PDF. (See below for details of Movie and PPT export.) Single page files can be exported in any of the above and other formats including: EMF, DWG, DXF, PS, SVG, BMP, JPEG, PNG and TIFF or, to the Windows Clipboard. Portions of a montage or an individual file can be extracted and saved with the Export Viewport function. PDF

Single page files, or a concatenation of multiple pages, can be exported as a single page of any length or, paginated to a multi-page PDF with user controls to specify the vertical page size (1.0 to 200 Inches, 25 to 5080 mm). The Multi-page output option should be used to constrain the page size to 200 inches or less if Adobe Acrobat® Version 7 or earlier is to be used for viewing. When exporting for viewing with Adobe Acrobat Version 8.0 or later there is no practical limit to the size of the pages that can be exported. However, with very large files it is generally quicker for current versions of Acrobat to display files that have smaller page sizes. The trade off for continuous data such as well log displays is increasingly larger file sizes as the page sizes are reduced. Movie Creation

Any multi-page/picture file can be exported as a movie sequence (or, as an Adobe PDF document or Microsoft PowerPoint presentation). When exporting as a movie, Controls are provided to specify Frame Rate, Size, Quality and any of the following formats: AVI, FLV, MP4, MPG, MOV and WMV. Power Point Export

Single and Multi-picture files can be exported as PowerPoint slides. This provides a quick and effective means to augment presentations with formats not directly supported by PowerPoint such as CGM Seismic and other complex graphics. Controls are provided to specify Resolution, Size and Output type - Vector or Raster to optimize display characteristics. The current page or all pages may be exported and automatically opened in PowerPoint for verification and immediate use.

Raster File Export

Raster export options include BMP, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, PPT and the Windows Clipboard. Controls are provided to specify output resolution, quality, and . Warning indicators are provided if the selected parameters would create excessively large files. Vector File Export

Vector export options include CGM, EMF, DWG, DXF, PDF, PPT, PS and SVG.

SDI Office preserves the full integrity of vector data throughout the conversion process and therefore, exporting to any of these formats, provides the highest data quality and scalability. For file types that support multiple pages, controls are provided to export the currently displayed page or all pages. Format Conversion

Files may be converted form one format to another by simply importing and exporting in the respective input and output formats.

Printing

Printing can be accomplished with SDI Office via the standard Windows print drivers or, with the APS option, via SDI’s patent pending Advanced Printing System which resolves serious limitations inherent in the standard Windows printer drivers. APS includes a unique and significantly improved printing process and has been integrated with Petrel® and other geoscience applications to provide reliable large format printing without the limitations of the standard Windows drivers. All commonly used large format plotters and desktop printers are supported and use the same comprehensive, intuitive, simple and reliable user interface. When printing long images - logs, seismic etc. to fan fold or roll media, selection of output size is greatly simplified by supplementing the list of standard page sizes with a selection of available media widths supported by the current device. I.e. plots of any length can be printed without the inconvenience of having to specify a custom page size or needing to have prior knowledge of the plot length. In addition, the layout of the final print is clearly depicted with a thumbnail of the actual image superimposed on an of the selected media size. Visual warnings are provided if the print will not fit without paging or paneling. Simply rotating the image or selecting a different media size may resolve the issue. If not, paneling is available by default or may be turned off to ignore data outside the currently available printable area. Alternatively, the user may apply proportional scaling to maintain the aspect ratio of the image or, in the case of well logs for example, the image may be scaled to fit the media width without affecting the Depth scale.

Overcoming the Windows GDI rendering deficiencies assures the user that data on the screen will be output reliably and faithfully regardless of size and data complexity. APS eliminates Custom Page sizes and ensures that the image is fully rendered, as intended, without wasting media or valuable time.

APS: Better quality and reliability - Less waste and frustration - Higher productivity.

Licensing:

SDI Office APS uses FlexLM licensing and licenses are available for Individual, Network Floating, SITE and Corporate use.

Individual licenses can be tied to a specific client machine or to a FLEXid USB dongle to permit long-term or temporary license transfers between machines.

Network and Site licenses include the FLexLM License Borrow feature to permit temporary off- line use, so that work can continue away from the office.

Platform compatibility:

SDI Office APS is certified for use on 32 and 64 bit XP and Vista O.S. on Intel® and AMD® CPUs.

® APS is a registered trademark of System Development, Inc. All other trademarks are the property of their respective owners.

SDI APS® FF Top of Form Calibration

Two software Top of Form calibration procedures are used to determine parameters that will enable the SDI APS FF Printing software to compensate for the physical specifications of the printer and the actual dimensions of the fanfold media that will be used for printing.

Initial Calibration: FF-Cal-ABC

1. Launch FF-Cal-ABC from the desktop shortcut 2. Select printer to be calibrated (Canon iPF510) and select NEW paper size to be calibrated. (The NEW paper sizes are located above the APS ROLL sizes in the Paper > Size drop down menu).

3. Ensure that Top of Form of Fanfold paper is correctly aligned in printer. This is best accomplished by unloading the paper, tear off any surplus, and reload. Printer will automatically align paper to initial Top of Form position. 4. Select Print on the ABC calibration GUI. This will launch the GUI below and will print three calibration scales A, B and C. Printing will finish without cutting the paper. Use the down arrow key to advance paper to end of print and tear off at last fold. (Paper should now be unloaded and reloaded to new Top of Form for subsequent printing.)

5. Enter a Reference Name for the NEW media and follow the instructions printed on the calibration scales to determine the A, B and C values. Enter these in the GUI and Save. (Note: If you wish to see the Calibration Results, press the Tab key after the values have been entered and then Save.) 6. Initial Calibration for this paper size is now complete. A new calibration will be required for each NEW paper size. Otherwise, use the Delta Calibration procedure below to keep the current paper size calibration up to date.

V1.3.2

Delta Calibration: FF-Cal-D 1. The D Calibration Scale is automatically appended to the end of each print and paper is advanced so that its value may be monitored without removing paper from the printer. 2. Before starting a production well log print, ensure that the Top of Form of the calibrated media is physically aligned in the printer as described above. 3. Run an initial print, preferably 50 ft or longer, and read the value of the D Calibration scale. If the

result on a long print is more than +/- 25 launch the D Calibration GUI and select the printer used for the current print. Also, check that the Paper > Size drop down menu shows the correct APS FF Paper Size and Reference Name. 4. Select Print. This will not move paper but will open the following GUI.

5. Enter the number of DPAGES and the offset value from Calibration Scale D. 6. Select Save to apply delta value to the original calibration or, Quit if you do not wish to apply. Note: Delete will remove the Reference Name and all associated values. 7. If delta calibration was applied, reload paper to Top of Form before running next set of prints. 8. When the delta result, from Calibration Scale D, is close to zero (0) you should be able to run several prints in succession without having to apply and realign again. Simply monitor the D Scale from time to time to ensure it has not drifted out of tolerance.

Tips and notes: 1. Results will vary by printer but, for the Canon iPF510 so long as the D value is less than +50 another print can be run without realigning paper. 2. Remember, only use the D calibration GUI if Top of Form was physically aligned at the start of the print and the print length was at least 33 DPAGES. 3. If you only have short prints to run you can apply the D value of the last print so long as you enter a DPAGES value that is the SUM of all the DPAGES values produced since the last physical alignment of Top of Form. (Do not sum the D values – use only the last one.) 4. Changing the Print Quality/Resolution on some printers may affect the results. If so run a separate initial ABC calibration for each setting.
