Tour Summary

A late afternoon flight saw us arriving at Hoskins Airport on West New Britain with the setting sun, and driving along the good coastal road to Walindi Resort. We went straight in for dinner and then settled into our very pleasant accommodations.

An early morning start saw us heading along various tracks through the oil palm plantation with a couple of short stops to see the handful of species that seem to thrive in this monoculture – such as Black Bittern, Nankeen Night Heron, Stephan’s Emerald Dove and our first Melanesian Megapode. We arrived at Garu Wildlife Management Area with sunrise; and, stepping out of the vehicle, were surrounded with in every direction – Red-knobbed , Blue-eyed Cockatoos, Knob-billed Fruit Dove, Red-flanked Lorikeets, Eclectus Parrots, Purple-bellied Lories, White-necked Coucals, Moustached Treeswift, Blyth’s Violaceous Coucals by Bengt Grandin Hornbills, New Britain Friarbirds, Long-tailed Mynas, Black Sunbird, Red-banded Flowerpeckers and Metallic Starlings all vying for our attention. Typical early morning birding in Melanesia! High pitched calls alerted us to some Buff-faced Pygmy Parrots, which we scoped up in the tree and even saw mating. Deep booming calls eventually revealed the presence of a trio of Violaceous Coucals which then sat out on open perches and dipped their heads as they called – a fantastic experience. Nearby, we found a recently split Melanesian Kingfisher and a couple of scarce Black Imperial Pigeons flew past.

Moving on a short distance, we located a pair of endemic White-mantled Kingfisher perched up high in a tree; while a Finsch’s Imperial Pigeon was seen briefly in flight, a White-breasted Ground Dove called in the distance and our first Black-capped Paradise Kingfisher was seen, albeit only in flight. We then entered a short forest track where we soon had reasonable looks at a typically flighty Velvet Flycatcher, and also had brief views of Black-tailed Monarch and another Paradise Kingfisher. We also spotted a beautiful little New Britain Dwarf Kingfisher. We tried another forest track, with more sightings of Velvet Flycatcher and Paradise Kingfisher and then spent some time scanning for raptors in the late morning and saw Variable Goshawk and Pacific Baza before we headed back to Walindi for lunch.

Shortly after lunch, we walked up the Kilu Ridge, where our local man on the spot expertly found us a pair of roosting New Britain Boobooks and we could enjoy them at length, although an impending thunderstorm saw us Blue-eyed Cockatoo by Bengt Grandin heading down the hill.

We carried on to the Kulu River area where it was still raining. There were lots of the more common birds about, but nothing especially noteworthy appearing in the continuing rain. Thankfully, that was about to change! Our local guide had recently seen a family of very poorly-known Pink-legged Rail nearby, so in the late afternoon we decided to see if we could find them again. Almost unbelievably, as we arrived at the spot, we saw an adult and at least two young birds racing out of the oil palm plantation and into the riparian scrub. After a wait of a few minutes, the rails walked back out into the open and, seemingly oblivious to our presence, showed very well for a couple minutes – at least two adults plus at least three young birds. Simply amazing! Pink-legged Rail by Bjorn Anderson

In this same area, we saw a number of Melanesian Megapode and then returned to Walindi for dinner. Right after dinner, we headed back out into the oil palm plantation in search of another very poorly- known , Golden Masked Owl – which has now been seen with some regularity over the past couple of years. It did not take long before we struck gold, finding one sitting on its typical roadside hunting perch. This bird was a bit flighty, so we continued searching and then found a second bird that was incredibly confiding and allowed us a prolonged and very close encounter on foot of one of the world’s most poorly-known owls. What an incredible day it had been!

Out again early, this time in a boat heading into Kimbe Bay, we called in first at Restorff Island. We were pleasantly surprised to see Beach Stone Curlews on the shore, along with several of the super- tramp small island specialists – Island Imperial Pigeon, Mangrove Golden Whistler and Sclater’s Myzomela. We then headed off to Malu Malu Island, where we were greeted by several much-wanted Nicobar Pigeon, along with a massive number of Rainbow Bee-eaters and a couple White-bellied Sea Eagles. We then headed further offshore in rather choppy conditions in search of pelagic seabirds. Inshore waters were productive, with large numbers of Black Noddy and Common and Great Crested Terns joined by a few Black-naped Terns and a very close Bridled Tern, along with a couple bow-riding Spinner Dolphins.

Offshore, conditions seemed promising: with a good breeze blowing, and hopes were high as we laid out the chum, but there was Beach Stone Curlew by Bengt Grandin not a bird to be seen from horizon to horizon. We gave it a couple hours, but there was simply nothing, so we headed in for the lee of Kimbe Island to have a picnic lunch. We then returned to Restorff Island, where we were now greeted by a pair of Beach Stone Curlews and also the remaining target birds for the day – Beach Kingfisher and Island Monarch. Having seen all the targets, we spent the remainder of our afternoon snorkelling along

the reef, where biodiversity was 100 times higher than what we had been watching above water – a great way to round off our day in Kimbe Bay!

For our final day of birding, we wanted to try and pick up a few remaining uncommon species, and so headed back to Garu this morning. We spent much of the morning birding from the roadside and from inside some narrow forest trails, and had a nice selection of birds. Good birds recorded included Superb Fruit Dove, Black Imperial Pigeon, Violaceous Coucal, Black-capped Paradise Kingfisher, our only Song Parrots of the extension, Ashy Mzomela and finally, some really good looks at Black-tailed Monarch. A Northern Common Cuscus was a nice mammalian highlight. We put in a fair Northern Common Cuscus by Bengt Grandin bit of effort through the morning, scanning for Black Honey Buzzard, but it was not to be.

We headed back to Walindi and made a quick stop at some tall flowering grasses where we scoped up a few Buff-bellied Mannikins. We then stopped at a large grassland area near the lodge. All seemed quiet in the mid-day heat, but we eventually saw a few King Quails. A couple of Bar-tailed Cuckoo Doves were a surprise in one of the few trees in the area, a Buff-banded Rail was taking a bath in the middle of the road, and an Intermediate Egret was a vagrant. We saw a couple of Australian Reed Warblers and then a Papuan Grassbird of the lowland form and a rare island endemic race – a good one in the bank for future splitting!

After lunch and a little siesta, we headed up to Haella, which is a chance to access the low hills. Focusing on a couple of the forest clearings, we picked up several Black-bellied Myzomelas in a fruiting tree. Some of us got on the uncommon Bismarck Hanging Parrot both in flight and perched. Large numbers of Yellowish Imperial Pigeon were in the area as well.

We returned to Walindi with the setting sun for a final dinner and left the lovely island of New Britain the following morning, having had a Yellowish Imperial Pigeons by Bengt Grandin very successful extension.
