The Carolina Hurricanes hold nine picks in the 2021 NHL Draft. The first round of the NHL Draft begins on Friday, July 23 and will be televised on ESPN2 at 8 p.m. ET. Rounds 2-7 will take place on Saturday, July 24 at 11 a.m. ET and will be televised on NHL Network. The Hurricanes made eight selections in the 2020 NHL Draft, including 13th-overall pick Seth Jarvis.

Roaring 20 – Sebastian Aho (35th overall, 2015) led the Hurricanes in goals (24), assists (33) and points (57) in 2020-21, becoming the first player to accomplish the feat since Eric Staal in 2011-12. He also joined Staal as the second player since relocation to tally at least a per game in multiple seasons (30-53—83 in 2018-19). Aho ranked first on the team in shorthanded goals (3) and tied for first in power-play goals (7), becoming one of five NHL players to lead their team in both categories in 2020-21 and one of three players to score at least three goals while shorthanded and on the power play. He also recorded a team-high 11 points (6g, 5a) during the playoffs, including the series-clinching in Game 6 of the First Round at Nashville on May 27.

Sveching Fire – Andrei Svechnikov (2nd overall, 2018) ranked fifth on the team in goals (15) and third in assists (27) and points (42) during the regular season. His 140 career points (59g, 81a) lead the 2018 NHL Draft class, and he ranks second on the team in goals since joining the Hurricanes in 2018-19. Svechnikov also recorded eight points (2g, 6a) during the playoffs, including a team-high six assists and a team-long, four-game point streak from May 30 to June 5 (1-4—5).

Naughty by Necas – Martin Necas (12th overall, 2017) tallied 41 points (14g, 27a) in 2020-21, becoming just the fifth different Czech- born player in franchise history to post 40 points in a single season. He scored the first two shorthanded goals and the first two overtime goals of his NHL/Hurricanes career, ranking tied for eighth and tied for fourth in the NHL in those respective categories. He also scored his first career shootout game-deciding goal at Florida on Feb. 27 before being named the NHL’s Third Star of the Week on March 8 and Second Star of the Week on March 29. Necas registered five points (2g, 3a) in 11 playoff games, including his first career postseason multi-goal game vs. Nashville in Game 5 of the First Round on May 25.

Carolina Hurricanes 2021 NHL Draft Guide

Behavin’ Slavin – Jaccob Slavin (120th overall, 2012) was named the winner of the 2020-21 Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, given to the player who best combines sportsmanship and gentlemanly play with high-level playing ability. He earned 15 points (3g, 12a) in 52 games and was assessed just two minutes despite averaging a team-high 22:59 of ice time per game. Slavin also registered six points (1g, 5a) in eight playoff games and passed Dave Babych and for the most playoff assists by a defenseman in franchise history (17).

Bean Machine – Jake Bean (13th overall, 2016) completed his first full NHL season in 2020-21, registering 12 points (1g, 11a) in 42 games during the regular season. He ranked tied for third in points and tied for second in assists among NHL rookie defensemen. Bean earned his first career NHL/Hurricanes point (assist) vs. Columbus on Feb. 15 and scored his first career NHL/Hurricanes goal at Florida on Feb. 27. He also scored a power-play goal in Game 1 of the Second Round vs. Tampa Bay on May 30, becoming just the third rookie defenseman in franchise history and the first since relocation to score a playoff goal.

Stevie Wonder – Steven Lorentz (186th overall, 2015) posted eight points (2g, 6a) in 45 games during his first NHL season in 2020-21, making his NHL/Hurricanes debut against Tampa Bay on Jan. 28. With an assist against Dallas on Jan. 30, he became the 10th player drafted by Hartford/Carolina with the 186th overall pick or later to earn a point with the franchise, and the first since Manny Legace (188th overall, 1993) on Dec. 18, 2009. At Nashville on March 2, he became the sixth such player to score a goal with the franchise, and the first since Craig Adams (223rd overall, 1996) on Jan. 10, 2008. Lorentz also tallied three assists in 11 playoff games, making his NHL/Hurricanes playoff debut in Game 1 of the First Round against Nashville on May 17 and joining Jaroslav Svoboda (208th overall, 1998) as the second such player to record a postseason point with Hartford/Carolina.

Hungry Like the Wolf – Carolina’s AHL affiliate, the Wolves, captured the Sam Pollock Trophy as Central Division champions after posting a 20-8-1-2 record during the regular season. Four Hurricanes’ draft picks made their AHL debuts with the Wolves: David Cotton (169th overall, 2015), Seth Jarvis (13th overall, 2020), Jamieson Rees (44th overall, 2019) and Ryan Suzuki (28th overall, 2019). Cotton ranked tied for second in goals (14) and tied for third in power-play goals (5) among AHL rookies.

Revenge of the Seth – Seth Jarvis (13th overall, 2020) split the 2020-21 season between Chicago (AHL) and Portland (WHL). He began the season by tallying 11 points (7g, 4a) with the Wolves through nine AHL games, including goals in five of his first six professional contests. He was leading the AHL in points when he was assigned to Portland on March 2. Jarvis then posted 27 points (15g, 12a) in 24 WHL games, including two hat tricks, to help Portland to a 13-8-3 record.

Jackpot – Jack LaFontaine (65th overall, 2016) posted a 22-7-0 record, 1.79 goals-against average, .934 save percentage and five in 29 NCAA games during his fourth collegiate season and his second at . He led all Division I goaltenders in wins and ranked tied for second in save percentage and shutouts and fourth in goals-against average as he led the Golden Gophers to a Big Ten Tournament championship. LaFontaine won the Mike Richter Award as the top in Division I, and he was also named Big Ten Goaltender of the Year, Big Ten Tournament Most Outstanding Player, a First-Team All-American and a top-10 finalist for the Hobey Baker Award.

Center of Attention – Jack Drury (42nd overall, 2018) recorded 30 points (10g, 20a) in 41 games with Vaxjo Lakers (SHL) during his first professional season. He also ranked second in the league with 11 playoff points (5g, 6a) in 14 games to help Vaxjo win its third Le Mat Trophy as SHL champions. Drury scored two goals in the championship-deciding game, including his first professional game- winning goal. He also represented the United States at the 2021 IIHF World Championship, scoring two goals in nine games as the team won a bronze medal.

Russian Around – Vasily Ponomarev (53rd overall, 2020) posted 38 points (10g, 28a) in 33 QMJHL games with Shawinigan in 2020- 21. Named an alternate for the Cataractes before the start of the season, he ranked fourth on his team in goals, with a league- high six game-winners. Ponomarev also won 59.6% of his faceoffs, marking the third-highest faceoff win percentage among all QMJHL centers (min. 30 draws). He also represented at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship, scoring a team-high three goals in seven games.

Flying Colors – While Jack Drury (42nd overall, 2018) won a bronze medal with the United States at the 2021 IIHF World Championship, his fellow Hurricanes’ 2018 draft pick Jesper Sellgren (166th overall, 2018) posted one assist in four games with . Additionally, three Hurricanes’ draft picks represented their countries at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship alongside Vasily Ponomarev of Russia: Noel Gunler (41st overall, 2020), Zion Nybeck (115th overall, 2020) and Ryan Suzuki (28th overall, 2019). Gunler (4-1—5) and Nybeck (0-1—1) represented Sweden, with Gunler leading the team in goals and tying for the team lead in points at the tournament.
