Kawa Training Center is an NGO that offers Tour guide courses to unemployed Zanzibari youth. We believe that Tourism can only be successful if local people benefit from it and that everybody works together to protect ’s cultural and natural heritage. We design original and sustainable tours that highlight Zanzibar’s cultural and natural heritage and daily life.

The tours are operated by tour operators and freelance tour guides who work in partnership with Kawa, they benefit from the tours that we have designed and from the tourguides who have graduated from the tour guide course and give a percentage of the tours’ profit to support Kawa Training Center.

HISTORICAL CITY TOUR is a maze of narrow streets and historical buildings. In the 19th century the town was formed under Omani rule, flourishing from the trade with slaves, ivory, gold and spices. Zanzibar was defined by Arab, Indian and European traders, and settlers and slaves from the inland of Africa. We will show you how to recognize these cultural and architectural patterns in the fabric of Stone Town. Don’t miss Tippu Tip’s grand home, befitting the most important slave trader, the sultans’ palaces, Darajani market, important Indian trade houses, mosques from Sunni, Ibadi and Indian Shi’i sects and European churches and consulates. A very interesting tour along sites you won’t easily find on your own.

STONETOWN CITY TOUR FOR KIDS The Stonetown City tour for Kids is especially designed for children to learn about Zanzibar in a fun way. Parts of its history will be told through stories of sultans and princesses, palaces and journeys to faraway places. The children will do some research of their own and learn how Zanzibari children live by participating in local activities together with them. Parents may accompany their children on this 3 hour tour or they can go on an adult city tour and leave the kids in the capable hands of our guides.

GHOST TOUR Join us if you dare on a spooky tour of Stone Town by night. By the mid-19th century a reported 25,000 slaves each year were traded through Zanzibar. Around the 1964 revolution around 14,000 Arabs and Indians were murdered and the rest fled Zanzibar or were deported; their houses were confiscated by the revolutionary government. Many Zanzibari believe ghosts of those enslaved or murdered, or spirits left behind, remain in Stone Town until today, haunting their former houses and slave chambers. We take you to those spots were ghosts are still seen and felt by locals. Listen to the tales of specific ghosts and haunted houses, and start to see the hidden past through Zanzibari eyes.

BLIND PEOPLES TOUR The walking tour takes place in Stonetown, Abdul was our student in 2012, he is blind, and together we developed this tour to support him and the blind in Zanzibar. Abdul takes you on an exploration of Stone town’s narrow streets. He shares how he experiences his surroundings, and encourages participants to fully explore their altered perception of the narrow streets, the smell of the spices, the sound of Taarab music that can be heard from afar. A local school will be visited so that you can see where the blind get their basic education followed by a visit to the ZANAB centre where you can share ideas with the blind and see what their daily activities are, after a cup of coffee or tea you will be challenged to a game of table tennis.

VIKOTOUR Ngambo literally means the other side; Stonetown and Ngambo were divided by a creek and connected by a bridge. It was a division between the poor and the rich. Come with us on a walking tour through this fascinating place where nature s reclaiming its space, so close to town you will find a sweetwater lake next to a saltwater lake, and a mangrove forest, this area attracts an abundance of wildlife. Enjoy the view and imagine the big trading dhows heading for the riches and fresh water supply of Zanzibar. Walk with us through the interesting suburb and wonder about the chaotic planning of this region, meet the people and see their daily activities Today tireless efforts to keep the place clean and recycle waste by a local initiative are well worth a visit and we hope that by supporting this initiative with our tour that the rest of the island will follow its lead.

SWAHILI COOKING WORKSHOP Discover Swahili cooking with its mixture of Arab, Indian, African and European influences and the prominent role of spices that are grown on Zanzibar. The tour begins with a visit to the market to buy the ingredients, then, under the guidance of an experienced Zanzibari cook, we prepare the various dishes. The cook will explain how to use Zanzibari spices and what the cultural or regional specifics of the dishes are. When the food is ready we will dine together, possibly with your friends or partners invited (for an extra fee), discussing our day and the merits of the Swahili kitchen.

CULTURAL NIGHT TOUR On this tour you look beyond the tourist attractions and get a glimpse of daily Swahili life. It takes you to the suburbs and beyond. You are invited to someone’s house for an authentic Swahili meal and interaction with the family. After dinner, we visit a Madrassa school where you can experience how children study the Koran by playing music and singing. If there is a wedding, or another special celebration on the day of your visit, we will include it in the tour. A real insider evening out.

SAFARI BLUE One of the best Ocean tours that Zanzibar has to offer is Safari Blue, Sail, snorkel, swim, sunbathe, explore, feast, observe, play... a Safari Blue day is packed with adventure The day begins in the little fishing village of Fumba, From here set out to sea into the Menai Bay where conservation efforts have allowed dolphins to flourish. We land on a powdery sandbank, we snorkel over two different reefs in the morning, both locations offering a variety of pristine marine life. Feast on our delicious fresh seafood buffet on Kwale Island. Discover all that Kwale island has to offer: explore the mangroves, climb an ancient baobab, witness the coral formations, swim or lounge the afternoon away on a day-bed or the beach. When the day is done, the crew hoists the lateen sail as you voyage back to Fumba.

PRISON ISLAND The "prison” on Prison Island was actually used as a quarantine station for the whole of British territories in east Africa. Most visitors now come for the island’s famous giant tortoises (the second largest in the world after the Galapagos tortoise) that were brought to Zanzibar from the as a gift to the Sultan. This is the only species of Indian Ocean giant tortoises that avoided extinction. You can walk freely amongst these gentle animals. Relax on the island’s small beach afterwards, or go snorkeling on a quite nice coral reef nearby. (The tour can also be combined with Bawe Island, the best snorkeling location close to Stone Town). On the boat trip back, you’ll get stunning views of the town’s waterfront. This is just one of those tours you won’t forget. .

MANGAPWANI EXPERIENCE Mangapwani is a very beautiful area rich in cultural history with impressive scenery and exclusive beaches. Many people just visit the Slave caves and the beach, missing out on the local feel just as the people of Mangapwani are missing out on benefitting from tourism. With this tour we aim to connect you with the vibrant local community and intimately explore the beautiful surroundings. That is why this tour is done on foot. The beach here is very beautiful and after the walk, a delicious beach pick nick will be prepared for you. After swimming and relaxing we will walk back to the car and return to Stonetown.

RED COLOBUS MONKEY & JOZANI FOREST Jozani Forest is Zanzibar’s last remaining substantial forest. It is a showcase for the biodiversity on Zanzibar: with very tall Mahogany trees, mangroves and salt marches to the north, and dry coral rag forest on the high ground. Jozani Forest is home to the Red Colobus monkey, an extremely rare species endemic to Zanzibar; only 2000 remain in the world. This monkey misses an enzyme to digest sugar and therefore eats unripe fruits off the trees, which is why the local people regarded it as a pest and called it “poison” monkey. With the South-East coast just 10 kilometers away, we have lunch and relax at a beautiful beach before heading back.

JOZANI FOREST & PETE NATURE EXPLORER This fun, action packed tour is for those who want to enjoy the nature of Zanzibar and help preserve it. The tour begins with a walk deep into the forest of Jozani road. Each monkey has its own special facial expression, we will take plenty of time to watch the behavior of the monkeys, and we will see how they jump from tree to tree and how they groom each other. The state of the forest on Zanzibar, outside the park boundaries is quite alarming the trees are vanishing quickly due to the population growth and the use of firewood. We have designed this tour in such a way that the people of Pete village can generate an income from tourism and will preserve the forest. We will board oxcarts and ride through the villages that surround the forest towards the Pete inlet and after a delicious pick nick lunch we will make a trip in a canoe through the mangrove forest. We will end our tour with a visit to the Zanzibar Butterfly Center. A community project. The Center generates income by tourism and by harvesting the butterfly pupae’s and selling them to collectors and other butterfly centers across the world. The butterfly garden is the largest butterfly enclosure in East Africa and it houses only species of Zanzibar butterflies. It is very interesting to learn more about the fascinating life cycle of the butterfly, its enemies and its clever way of imitation and fooling the predator’s eye.
