Jamey Newberg is 2013 Diamond Dreams “Keeper of the Game”

GRAPEVINE, TEXAS, July 22, 2013— Diamond Dreams is proud to announce that it has selected Dallas attorney, blogger and advocate Jamey Newberg as its “Keeper of the Game” award winner for 2013.

The Diamond Dreams Keeper of the Game award is given annually to recognize a special person, family, or organization committed to serving the baseball community in North Texas and beyond through gifts of time and treasure and perpetuating the qualities of the game that exemplify Mike Coolbaugh’s dedication and values. The award’s honoree is announced each year on the anniversary of Mike Coolbaugh’s tragic accident as the Coolbaugh and Diamond Dreams families remember what Mike meant to all those who knew him. first baseman Chris Davis and his wife Jill were the recipients of the inaugural Keeper of the Game award in 2012. In addition to recognizing Jamey at an award presentation dinner after the baseball season, Diamond Dreams is making a donation in Jamey’s name to an organization of his choice.

“You don’t have to know Jamey very long to get a glimpse of his passion for the sport, the Rangers, and for helping out those who need a hand,” Diamond Dreams founder said. “The [D/FW] Metroplex is a better place to be a baseball fan because of Jamey’s enthusiasm, and many lives have been touched because of the way he takes advantage of his opportunities to help others.”

Jamey Newberg was chosen as the 2013 Keeper of the Game in recognition of his work over the last decade in raising money for local charities through his Newberg Report functions and promoting baseball throughout Texas. Having earned a loyal readership (more than 20,000 strong) of his Newberg Report newsletter, Jamey has used his annual gatherings at Texas Rangers games and book release parties to showcase the generosity of his readers and friends. Report community and other local baseball enthusiasts have raised more than $75,000 to support a number of worthy causes including, among others, the Hello Win Column Fund, Wipe Out Kids’ Cancer, the Genesis Women’s Shelter, the Feed the Children Foundation, the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation, the Shannon Stone Memorial Fund, the Emilie Parker Memorial Fund, Toys For Tots, and Diamond Dreams.

“The Coolbaughs are role models for every baseball family in North Texas,” Newberg said. “As the father of a youth ballplayer myself, I’m humbled to be associated with the great work Susan and Scott do to keep Mike’s legacy alive and make this great game safer and more accessible for kids who want to play.”

Mike Coolbaugh Diamond Dreams is a non-profit organization that honors the memory of Mike Coolbaugh by promoting safety in the game of baseball and providing support to members of the baseball community in need. On July 22, 2007, while coaching first base for the in the AA , Mike Coolbaugh was struck by a line drive in foul territory and killed instantly. To honor Mike and his contributions to baseball, and to advance Mike’s passion for perpetuating the game and helping others, Scott and Susan Coolbaugh (Mike’s brother and sister-in-law) started Diamond Dreams in 2009. In Mike Coolbaugh’s honor, Diamond Dreams has raised money to build safe, state-of-the-art batting cages and practice facilities, provided financial assistance and baseball equipment to others in the baseball community nationwide who have been affected by tragedy, and awarded college scholarships to student-athletes from Mike’s high school in San Antonio and D/FW area high schools. Since 2007, Scott Coolbaugh has been a in the Texas Rangers organization, including serving as the major league hitting coach in 2011 and 2012, and Diamond Dreams has been blessed to have the support of so many people in the Rangers organization and throughout the community in the D/FW Metroplex.
