el camino college Lamppost ______September 2006 Volume 23 Number 1 LEARNING RESOURCES UNIT NEWSLETTER

THE NAME LIVES ON The 2006-2007 school year brings several new initiatives to the Learning Resources Unit. The El Camino College Compton Center presents us with the opportunity to work with a sister library and in some instances share resources, since students at both campuses can borrow books from the other. Collegial activities are planned during the year with the faculty and staff of the Compton Center Library and Learning Resources Center. It is expected that early in 2007 the building program for the enhanced ECC Learning Resources Center will begin. It is expected that this addition will provide an expanded Basic Skills Center, larger tutorial center, a Distance Education classroom, a place for used books, a digitalization center and the El Camino College Archives. As a result, the dynamics of the second floor of the Library may experience some changes. Noise will definitely be a factor but we do not anticipate interruption of service during the construction. A casualty of the construction will be the large tree(s) on the north Library lawn. The new building will be separated from the current one but walkways, etc. will connect the services in the two buildings. We look forward to these enhancements. The Music Library continues in the current format but some operational changes are expected in the future. It currently serves as a specialty laboratory for students enrolled in fine arts programs, especially the music program, and provides printed books, music, media and access to the music practice rooms. A librarian and two library technicians, members of the LRU team, are assigned to the facility. During the evening hours evening supervisors are hired by the Fine Arts Division to staff the library/lab. Though understaffed in several departments, the LRU will continue to strive to meet its mission of “fostering a productive learning environment by providing quality resources, instruction and instructional support services to the El Camino Community.” The name lives on: Learning Resources Unit.

MUSIC LIBRARY NEWS Hello and greetings to everyone from the Music Library staff! Our ECC Music Library is operating as usual this year to help our students and faculty interact and learn from each other. It’s a busy place, but we have room for more of our ECC community to visit and use our facilities. We have had some exciting and significant gifts of materials to our Music Library during the past year. Most notably, Mary Haag, in accordance with Dr. Robert Haag’s (her husband’s) wishes, has donated to our collection three large printed monuments of music: the complete works of Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart—representing a large monetary value. Also, we have begun processing a large gift of organ music which we received from the estate of Russell Wing, a prominent local organist for many years until his passing a couple of years ago. Most recently, this past summer, we accepted a large gift of violoncello music from the estate of Gilbert Reese, an internationally-known cellist who lived in our South Bay area. The cello music represents comprehensive holdings for the solo violoncello repertoire. In each case, almost every one of the hundreds of items and volumes in each bequest has been a valuable addition to our collection, not duplicates. Additional good news: most of these new items have already been downloaded into our Millennium online catalog and await final processing and updating, but are accessible to our users. It is because of this kind of amazing community support of our Music Library over the past decades that our facility and collection have become notable, even unique, among community college libraries in the state and nationwide. Thanks to you all, and let’s keep up the great work of serving our students and community!

We can help your students get the most out of the research topics you assign them. We offer general orientation sessions, or can tailor sessions specifically to your topic, we even have a hands-on computer lab if you want your students to practice their newly acquired skills right away! OURSPACE.COM Ah, the sweet sounds of fall semester; the gentle footfalls of freshmen wending their way round the campus, maps and $1 schedules in hand. We love this time of year. Oh, the angry shouts of fall semester; the harsh words from freshmen not accustomed to long lines and closed classes, upset as they try to find their classroom on the map and puzzled by what they read on their $1 schedule. We hate this time of year. In the Schauerman Library, like everyone else, we witness this yin/yang of this season. We enjoy seeing the fresh faces of new students, helping them navigate their way through their first few weeks of their college lives. We welcome them to our house, our Library, and hope they will soon take pride in this special space in their academic lives. We hope that these students will soon feel a sense of ownership in the Library, so that they, too, will consider themselves a part of our Library; that the “our” includes them, as well as faculty and staff. To that end there will necessarily be a learning curve for these students. There will need to be buy-in of what we can and cannot do for them and what our expectations are of them while using Library space. That is ever the challenge for both them and our staff. For instance, the new students may be used to talking on cell phones where and whenever they want, and certainly they are not used to having anyone tell them they cannot talk on their cell phones in the Library. The same goes for eating and drinking and talking loudly, needing an ECC photo ID to check out materials, and the countless other rules, regulations and policies that are required when using the Library. Those are just some of the rules students will be learning in the next few weeks. Some will adapt to and understand these requirements and will not have a problem in following the guidelines. Others may take a bit more time to grasp what we expect from them. In the end, come June, it is our hope that the graduates will remember fondly their first few days on campus when they discovered “their” library and those times when their education began, in effective library-use and common courtesy. Similarly, we hope they will recall when they began their ownership of a living/thriving house of information resources and respectfully acknowledge those who helped provide access to those resources. We wish these new owners good luck as they begin their academic careers at El Camino College. We look forward to spending some time getting to know our new owners and hope that they will bear with us as they learn about why and what we do in the Library.
