Programme Printing & Sponsor – Cats Solutions Best wishes And all our First Team player sponors and all our groundside board sponsors Mark WORLD OF FOOTBALL this week looking at ....fans clubs Ten days ago, when the Wootton Bassett Town game at Binfield fell victim to a lunchtime postponement, the Smedley family had a decision to make. With Scott already in Woking and with Stuart already on the train out of Waterloo what were we going to do that afternoon? With wife Claire wanting to go shopping in Kingston the solution was easy, a trip to watch AFC Wimbledon play in the Blue Square Premier, AFC Wimbledon playing at the old Kingstonian ground in Kingston. With the car parked up near the shops Stuart, Scott and I set off on foot for the football ground. Now it did not look too far on the map but took us a good twenty five minutes. Not really knowing where we were going and not seeing too many fans heading in the direction of the ground we wondered whether we had gone in the right direction but in the end we had taken the most direct route, the ground is just a little way out of the town centre! The game did attract a crowd of just over 3,000 in a nice little stadium that Swindon Town may well be visiting next season. It seems most of the fans approach the ground from the other direction and not from the town centre. In an entertaining game, AFC Wimbledon defeated Altrincham 4-1 with a hat-trick for the very useful Danny Kedwell. It was interesting to see that the Wimbledon club include all the honours of the previous Wimbledon side, including the FA Cup in their honours list in the matchday programme. There president is one Dickie Guy, the former goalkeeper who was the star of their giant killing FA cup days when the old Wimbledon club were still a non-league side. There are other old Wimbledon connections with Marcus Gayle as the Reserve Team manager.

AFC Wimbledon were the first of the various clubs formed by a supporters trust. After decades of success, the old Wimbledon FC was allowed by a supine FA Commission to relocate to Milton Keynes. The Dons fans were outraged and determined not to let a proud 104-year history die. Within just six weeks during the summer of 2002, AFC Wimbledon, a club the sports governing body had declared would be not in the wider interests of football, was born. The new Dons opening match in the Combined Counties League (same level in the pyramid as Wootton Bassett Town currently play at) attracted 2,449 fans to Sandhurst Towns basic Bottom Meadow ground, where bales of hay were brought in to form improvised terracing. After finishing third at the end of that first campaign, the Dons secured a league and cup double in 2004. The next season they won the Ryman League First Division South before twice failing in the Premier Division playoffs over the following 24 months.

The upward momentum was restored with the arrival of experienced manager Terry Brown in 2007. In his first year the new boss helped the team scramble out of the Ryman League via the playoffs, and followed that up by leading his side to the Conference South title at the first attempt. The Blue Square Premier proved a tougher nut to crack, and despite being in fourth place at the turn of the year the club finished outside the playoff places last April. They currently top the Blue Square this season but high spending Crawley are just one point behind with six games in hand due to their own FA Cup exploits and are favourites to achieve the one automatic place into the Football League. AFC Wimbledon will then be looking to make it back into the league via the play-offs if they are pipped by Crawley. From what we saw they will have a good chance of making it back into the Football League.

The rise of AFC Wimbledon has brought inevitable comparisons with their illustrious predecessors climb from the Southern League to the old First Division during the 1970s and 80s. That success culminated in victory over Liverpool in the 1988 FA Cup Final, prompting BBC commentator to deliver the immortal line, The have beaten the Culture Club. That unique spirit lives on in the large numbers of fans who give up their time to run the present club. AFC Wimbledon is still wholly owned by its supporters via the one-fan, one-vote Dons Trust. It was conceived on 27 May 2002 by Ivor Heller, Kris Stewart, Trevor Williams and Marc Jones. While fellow campaigners were protesting in Soho Square and waiting to hear whether the relocation of their club would be sanctioned, these four were looking at how they could start anew. We all felt that if the vote went against us we would have to start another club, Heller said.

Eight years on, he is the clubs commercial director. The new Dons have made steady progress. While making plans for a possible future return to Wimbledon, they are gradually redeveloping the ground in Kingston their fans bought, and the youth set-up is growing fast. Backed last year by average attendances of over 3,500, the club took the decision to go full time this season as the development continues.

AFC Wimbledon are not the only fans club to be doing well this season. AFC Telford, formed following Telfords demise are currently 3rd in the Blue Square North. FC Halifax, rising from the ashes of former Football League side Halifax Town are romping away with the Evo-Stik Premier League and look dead certs for promotion into the Conference North. FC United, the disillusioned Manchester United fans club, are currently in 6th spot in the same division, just outside the play-off places. Finally, Chester, formed out of the ashes of the old Chester City club, are running away with Division One North of the Evo-Stick League. It certainly looks like it is going to be a good season for the fans clubs in 2010-11. FROM THE DUGOUT

Firstly I would like to welcome the players, officials and supporters of Bicester Town to Rylands Way. We hope you enjoy your short stay with us and will join us all for a drink in the bar after the game.

It was great to be home again on Saturday after four games on the road. We have had mixed fortunes on our travels over the last few games. The most encouraging thing for me is the quality of the football we have produced in those games. We are starting to find our feet at this level and we are also starting gel as a team. Some of the performances from our youngsters have been very good of late and they are really beginning to find their feet. I said it would take us a while to adapt to this league and that has proved to be the case. On Saturday our excellent 4-1 win over an Abingdon Town side who are above us in the league demonstrated that this side is definitely capable of winning games at this level.

Hopefully we will go on from this excellent win and if you get behind this group of youngsters they will give you a lot to cheer about over the coming seasons. Our aim of staying in the league this season is well within our grasp.

This evening it is Cup action as we entertain Division One West side Bicester Town. It seems a long time since we played the last round in this competition, away at Rayners Lane. Despite our opponents tonight being from Division One West, if we are to get anything out of tonights game we will need to be at our best. We have competed well over the last few games and if we can replicate our last few performances I will be a happy manager.

We have picked up a few injuries over the last couple of games. Craig Bowdon has picked up a broken nose and could be out for a few games. Sean Carter is suffering with a shin problem. Tonight we will look to blood a couple of our youngsters who have been playing well for the Reserves. If we are to compete at this level long term then we will need to produce and nurture our youngsters.

I hope you all enjoy this evenings game but however it is going get behind the lads and encourage them.

Bassett started confidently enough passing the ball around well. It was not Bassett Triumphant In Close Fought Battle Against Bicester long before a strong Kidlington side got to grips with the game although Bassett did have a goal disallowed after six minutes when the referee adjudged that Davis had fouled the keeper. The Wiltshire squad readjusted the system and slowly worked their Bassett were the team who started off brightest in the opening few minutes forcing the majority of way back into the game. But worse followed when injury, Gary Ashford coming onto replace him. Bassett opened their scoring account for the day five Stoddart put the rebound wide. Bassett laid siege to the Kidlington goal, but their just reward minutes before half time when Mark Simpkins struck a beautiful free kick, his low shot curled round was not to be. In a rare Kidlington attack, Read - who had been a spectator for most of the the wall into Steve Roberts goal. Bassett continued to attack before the break, Stu Lamont having an second half, pulled off a great save from a point blank header. Bassett went in to the break a goal to the good after a decent could feel that, on this performance, the best side had come second on the day. first half. With a run of five home games Wootton Bassett Town were confident of turning this good form into Bassett started off on top again in the second half, Dave Jones having two opportunities in a row, but points and move up the table but this unfortunately did not prove to be the case. In the first fixture unfortunately both were squandered. In the 53rd minute Bicester made a change to try and salvage a against Cheltenham Saracens goals from Gary Ashford and Simon Green put Wootton Bassett 2-0 up only for the visitors to score three in an entertaining fixture. Manager Dave Warren noted the goal bringing James Wallis on for Gordon Bedford. Bassett continued to dominate proceedings when following in his programme notes for the next home fixture: in the 57th minute Nathan Hall had a shot, which was deflected into the keepers hands; if it had not been for the deflection it would have gone in. Bassett made their second substitution, bringing Justin What a game we had last week against Cheltenham Saracens. It was disappointing that we Hyde on to replace Danny Clayton. Bicester had two good chances after the change for Bassett but lost 2-3 but it was good entertainment for any neutral. I thought we were excellent in the first they came to nothing. Bicester continued to challenge the Bassett back four as Steve Hale in the half, well in control playing good football and thoroughly deserved our half time lead 1-0 Bassett goal had to punch clear an effort in the 65th minute. Bassett had a chance through Rob Day in with a superb goal from Gary Ashford. We started the second half in the same vein and added the 68th minute when he shot wide. Gary Ashford had an immediate chance just after when he shot a second with a well taken far post header by Simon ‘Bilic’ Green, his first of the season. We inches wide. Bicester then had an opportunity to get a goal back in the 67th minute when substitute then thought we had done the job and took our foot off the pedal, stopped doing all the good James Wallis missed, when it would have been easier to score. Immediately Bicesters Duncan Currie things that had put us in the driving seat, i.e. good shape, tight marking, good concentration then hit a shot over the bar. Bassett made their final change in the 78th minute bringing Mark and discipline. It seems that our players have to learn the hard way. At this standard of football you cannot give any team a ‘snif’ to get back into the game which is what happened Hammond on for the tired Nathan Hall. After that, in the 83rd minute Dean Smith replaced Duncan with Saracens. But I must end on a positive note because over the past two weeks we have Currie for Bicester. Bassett continued to attack toward the end of the game when in the 84th minute played the third and fourth placed team and shown that we can compete with them, played Justin Hyde laid a perfect ball in but it did not find anyone. Hyde was booked three minutes later better football on both occasions and have taken them all the way, something that did not when he retaliated at a Bicester defender after young referee Ian Trueman called for a foul. Bassett immediately improve in a few areas, we are still a developing team. If we can play a full 90 minutes on a got the ball back from the free kick and Ashford scored a scorcher when he blasted into the roof of the consistent basis like we did for 65 minutes last week then we need fear no one. net. Bicester tried to get a goal back in the dying seconds but without success. A Bassett win, their first since Almondsbury away. In the first week of the half term, Wootton Bassett was on their break, with only a few games played.

The Under 11 team kicked off this week with a very strong 8-0 victory over FC Calne B with two goals coming from both Declan Cox and Lewis Ward, with the joint efforts of Oliver Cameron, Conor Chivers, Declan Coffrey and Callum Bridges driving the score home. Victory lifted them into second with four games remaining, and if they win their game in hand they can go top.

Unfortunately, there were defeats this week, with the Under 10 B squad being narrowly defeated 4-2 against Marlborough Youth with goals from Hadley Bridgman and Daniel Carey. Defeat was their first in six games, but has left them much to do if they are to finish runners-up in Division Four with just two games left. However it must be said they have had an extremely successful second season playing competitive football.
