Because 440,000 Americans die from tobacco-related diseases each year, the tobacco industry must recruit replacement smokers. They shell out big bucks for research on how to sell their deadly products to youth and communities of color most effectively. ✱ Tobacco companies spent $12.47 billion on advertising and promotion (like magazine ads, in-store ads, bar/party promotions, sponsorship THE FACTS of events, direct mailings) in the United States in 2002. ✱ This means that the tobacco industry will spend in one day ($34 million) what California will spend on its public schools in one year1! The tobacco industry targets youth, women, communities Internal tobacco industry documents show that they target Asian Ameri- of color, the gay community and the poor with slick cans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs)2.

38 2000 Tobacco Industry Projects—a Listing (173 pp.) Project “A”: American Tobacco Co. plan from 1959 to enlist Professors Hirsch and Shapiro of NYU’s Institute of Mathematical Science to evaluate “statistical material purporting to show association between smoking and lung cancer.” Hirsch and Shapiro concluded that “such analysis is not feasible because the studies did not employ the methods of mathematical science but represent merely a collection of random data, or counting noses as it were.” Statistical studies of the lung cancer- smoking relation were “utterly meaningless from the mathematical point of view” and that it was “impossible to proceed with a mathematical analysis of the proposition that cigarette smoking is a cause of lung cancer.” AT management concluded that this result was “not surprising” given the “utter paucity of any direct evidence linking smoking with lung canner.”112 Project A: Tobacco Institute plan from 1967 to air three television spots on smoking & health. Continued goal of the Institute to test its ability “to alter public opinion and knowledge of the asserted health hazards of cigarette smoking by using paid print media space.” CEOs in the fall of 1967 had approved the plan, which was supposed to involve “before-and-after opinion surveys on elements of the smoking and health controversy” to measure the impact of TI propaganda on this issue.”113 Spots were apparently refused by the networks in 1970, so plan shifted to Project B. Project A-040: Brown and Williamson effort from 1972 to 114 Project AA: Secret RJR effort from 1982-84 to find out how to improve “the RJR share of market among young adult women.” Appeal would 112 Janet C.

  • Sovereign and the Cheap Cigarette Market Qualitative Research
Sovereign and the Cheap Cigarette Market Qualitative Research Debrief April 1998 Page 1 of 55 1 BACKGROUND Sovereign was relaunched in March 1996 in full flavour, with Lights following at the end of the year, and a ten pack of full flavour available from summer 1997 . Good penetration has been achieved, with Sovereign accounting for about 2 1/2 % of the market . Gains have been from Benson & Hedges customers (who would probably otherwise have switched to Lambert & Butler) and from Lambert & Butler customers . Sovereign was launched specifically to attack Lambert & Butler (at the lower end of the market), because Benson & Hedges customers seemed to be converting to Lambert & Butler on price grounds . This is a trend in the cheaper end of the market, which now accounts for about 30% share. Sovereign retails at £2 .65 and Lambert & Butler at £2 .75, although both are discounted in supermarkets . Other competitive brands tend to be Royals (24s, but now also in a 20 pack at £2.75) and Mayfair (£2.59), and probably also Embassy Regal and JP Superkings. Sovereign advertising has employed a jester, a joke in the visual and emphasis on price . There has also been sampling activity and direct mail offering money off. Experience has indicated that price reductions are much more motivating to consumers than free gifts or other offers . The strategy has been to market price marked packs where possible, but plain packs in supermarkets to allow for discounting . This also applies to Lambert & Butler . The belief is that Sovereign users are likely to have a repertoire of brands and to be very price sensitive .

  • Don't Stub This Butt!
Don’t Stub This Butt! Newsletter for May 2018 We are no advocates of smoking. We also don’t stand in moral judgement of any industry or company. We simply have an affinity for those that generate growing cash flows and which distribute them to shareholders. Tobacco is one such industry. Today, tobacco stocks trade at decadal lows in terms of their valuations, even as their profits (in most cases) continue to climb ever higher. It has been hard to resist taking a serious look at them now. We asked ourselves several pointed questions. Is the market correct in its perennial concerns about the industry today more than at any time in history? Will the industry’s profits go into a terminal decline? Stock prices seem to believe they might. If proven otherwise, history will mark this as a multi-year trough and the proverbial buying opportunity of a lifetime. The four most talked-about concerns regarding the industry (that have been so for some time) are: 1. It is heavily regulated and litigated 2. It is highly taxed 3. The fact that smoking is declining 4. The advent of e-cigarettes Heavy Regulation and Litigation There have been umpteen regulatory attempts over the past decades to rein in smoking, from outright bans on cigarette advertising to banning smoking in public places to the more recent plain paper packaging introduced in certain countries. In addition to this, legal settlements in the U.S. have cost the industry billions. Such settlements could have killed off many other industries. However, the tobacco industry has fought back each time and not just ensured its survival but also thrived thereafter.
